From Our Pastor “Ad Fontes” (Back to the Sources) The above phrase was one that was popular in Martin Luther’s day, as many scholars continued to encourage society to return to the original sources to find renewed wisdom and study. While many of those scholars were encouraging a return to the original Greek and Latin classics of centuries earlier, Martin Luther and many other faithful Christian teachers called their learners back to the sources of the Scripture. This October 31, 2017 will mark 500 years since the Reformation began with the posting of Luther’s 95 Theses. Over the coming months, I will be sharing a variety of resources and studies to help the people of Calvary go back to the sources of our Lutheran faith, which always lead us back to the source of Scripture alone. I invite you to check in each month for our newsletter to see more Lutheran history and theology, helping us grow deeper in our faith in Christ. And now for our first installment.

--Pastor Kurt Ebert On October 31, 1517, in Wittenberg, Germany, Martin Luther posted his thoughts about some theological topics and the practices of the Church. That simple action began the Reformation — a movement that changed Western society. One man stood against the corruption of the establishment. Luther’s fight was, of course, one of theology. But it was still one man, a monk, against the massive Holy Roman Empire. Luther was threatened, exiled, condemned and labeled a heretic. But his teaching grew in popularity throughout his life. Those who follow Luther’s teachings number in the millions. Most Protestant churches today trace their lineage, in some part, to the teachings of Luther. The German language exists as it does today in large part due to Luther’s translation of the New Testament. Luther’s writings on the freedom of the Christian to serve the government, and the role of the government to establish justice and to protect citizens, have greatly influenced our view of authority. Though he was a theologian, Luther wrote and thought about all of life. He was concerned for the children in his town. He was involved in the politics of his day. He was an academic. He was a family man. He was a revolutionary. He was involved in the lives of the poor and the common man. Yet this Reformation anniversary is not a celebration of Luther. Even the Lutheran church does not celebrate Luther. Lutheran does not mean a follower of Luther, but of his theological teachings. Luther and the other Reformation theologians believed that all mankind is sinful, that everyone is guilty of error in God’s sight. They also believed that God will punish those who do what He forbids. The problem is not only that everyone sins, but that mankind’s sinful condition means there is no way to do enough good things to earn God’s love. The Reformation proclaimed that the solution to the problem is not in man, but in God. Luther and his followers taught that the Bible teaches salvation by God’s grace, through faith, because of Jesus. The message of the Reformation is that the Scriptures teach that God has grace on sinners. He gives forgiveness freely to all who believe in Him. This forgiveness is given through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross and His resurrection from the dead. All who believe in Jesus as their Savior receive forgiveness and eternal life. All of this is a free gift from a loving God. Check out more at this month’s digital resource: http://lutheranreformation.org/history/

Associate Pastor Call Update At the February 12 Congregational Voters’ Meeting, the voters of Calvary extended a “designated but limited” call to any of three seminary students: Joseph Beran, Joshua Reifsteck, John David (JD) Zischke. Call Day at Concordia Seminary St. Louis will be on Wed., April 26, when they will announce where each seminary student has been placed for their first call. If we receive one of these candidates, we will find out on that day who it will be. If we do not receive a seminary candidate, we may hear a little earlier, but it is uncertain until the final-slotting process takes place just a few days prior to Call Day. We pray for God’s guidance for the Council of Presidents and seminary placement directors as they work through the placement process.

Director of Youth & Family—Call Update At the Mar 12 Voters’ Meeting, a call was extended to Sam Troemel of Napa, CA. Please keep Sam, his wife (Molly), and his congregation in your prayers as he deliberates on our call. Sam and Molly visited Calvary on March 24th—26th.

The theatrical stage production will be performed at 7:00 p.m. at Lutheran High School of Indianapolis on the following dates: Friday, March 31st, Saturday, April 1st, Friday, April 7th and Saturday, April 8th. We wish to communicate Jesus to our community. Our boast is Him alone. He loved us so much that He came to save us by His death and resurrection.” The performance will take place at Lutheran High School of Indianapolis. The school is located at 5555 S. Arlington Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46237. Calvary Lutheran School News from Principal Rensner

It is FINISHED! FINISHED - ended or completed; completed or perfected in all details These are the words that Christ spoke on the cross as He bowed His head to die. Yes, the plan of salvation initiated by God with Adam and Eve was now finished. Or was it? The sacrifice was made to save us. Yes, it was finished. This sacrifice was once and for all. But had Christ remained in the grave our faith would have been in vain. Yet Christ is risen from the dead. Easter Sunday was the triumph over death and the devil. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!! Alleluia. We still have work to do. God has called each of us to work in His kingdom. We are gathered in His Name to serve Him. It is not finished. The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. We are to be ready with an answer as we step out in faith caved to serve. I like to clean up the saw dust, put the tools away, and view the finished product. At this point I know that this project is finished. Investments of time, resources, and energy have created a finished product. God invests in each of us as His Son cried, “It is finished.” He has sent to us His Holy Spirit creating faith in our hearts. Yet again, we are not finished nor is God finished with us. God desires us to grow each day in Him. This is our joy each day as we share the Risen Savior with the students. We see God’s plan as the students grow and learn. We see faith in action. May God grant to all His grace and peace as we walk in His will. 2017-18 School Registration Registrations for the 2017-18 school year are currently being accepted. Staffing and other needs are being planned as we open the doors to a new school year in August. Please contact the school office for additional information. Inquiries are to be directed to our Admission Counselor, Amy Andre. 2017-18 Calvary Lutheran School Teacher Update After much prayer and seeking God's Will and direction, Mrs. Rensner has come to the decision that she will not return next year as our 2nd grade teacher. She desires to spend more time with family and especially her 7 grandchildren. She also feels that the Lord is Calling her to serve Him in other avenues of ministry. We thank God for His gifts in Mrs. Rensner and her combined 21 years of teaching ministry to the students and families of Calvary. We ask the Lord to be with her as she experiences this transition. Position Available The Christian School Ministry Team is currently accepting teacher candidate names for second grade for the 2017-18 school year. Please call the school office to submit names or for additional information. We ask the Lord to lead us according to His will. Fine Arts Fair The 6th – 8th grade choir and 5th – 8th grade band students will be spend part of the day at the Lutheran High School of Indianapolis on Friday, April 21. The students will be under the watchful eye of a clinician. Students from the other Lutheran Schools in the area will join them. We invite you to attend the choir and band concert that evening at 7:00PM. Student art projects will also be on display during this fine art fair. We thank God for the gift of these talents. An evening of music and art await you. Fellowship Ministry Reverse Purse Party Calvary’s Weekend of Service is around the corner! You are invited to sort donated items and pack purses/cinch bags April 8th and 9th for the Reverse Purse Party hosted by Fellowship Team in Room 125. Thank you for all your donations from our Wish List! Sorting Party - Saturday, April 8th at 5:30 – 6:30 pm Packing Party – Sunday, April 9th at 9:20 – 10:20 am

What is a Reverse Purse Party? The idea came from Project Purse Indianapolis and emphasizes "peer to peer giving" rather than "peer to peer selling." New or gently used purses are collected and filled with personal health and beauty items, as well as a card of hope and affirmation. The filled purses/bags are then distributed to homeless and disadvantaged women throughout the area. The Fellowship Team is working with the Homeless Initiative Program that services homeless veterans. Since the response from the congregation has been overwhelming, we intend to give purses/cinch bags to other homeless initiatives in the Indianapolis area in addition to homeless veterans. Stewardship Emphasis Easter is a moveable feast. Easter isn't on the same calendar date every year in the way that Christmas is always celebrated on December 25. The date for Easter each year always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring equinox. And once you find the date of Easter, everything else finds its place—Good Friday and Maundy Thursday, Ash Wednesday and the Transfiguration, the Ascension of our Lord and Pentecost. All this is a long way of saying that Easter determines everything. Easter defines everything. It orders not only the entire church year, but it orders our very lives. It defines and gives meaning to our lives, as well to the things that happen in them. And since Easter defines everything, that means it changes everything too. It redefines who we are and where we stand with God and with one another. Easter makes all things new.

Without Easter, Jesus would not be raised from the dead. Without Easter death would still reign, we would still be in our trespasses and sins, and our faith and hope would be in vain. But Jesus is raised from the dead. Easter changes everything. It makes all things new. Therefore, darkness is overcome with light, wrath with peace, fear with hope, angst with rest, sadness with joy, hatred with love, sin with righteousness, and death with life. Easter changes everything, redefines everything, determines everything. Easter makes all things new. Thus, Easter also changes our attitude about giving. For if God gave us His own Son into death so that we will live, how will He not give us everything else we need? He will, and He does. He provides for us. He even gives us the gifts that we give back to Him for service in the church. Easter demonstrates that we have a God who loves us, a God who provides for us, a God who presses us into His service, a God who has made us new in the death and resurrection of His Son. For when you give to the church, you pass along those things that God alone has given to you. You pass along the message to others that Easter changes everything and makes all things new, even as it has done this for you. This is not a burden, but pure joy. For God has given you a part in the administration of His kingdom. He provides for the needy through your hands. He ensures that the Gospel is preached and the Sacraments are given out through the work of your hands and in the gifts that you give. And He honors and blesses this work and generosity as it redounds to those around you. So when you sit down on the first day of the week to make your offering to the place where Easter is proclaimed and where the gifts of Easter are given out, remember: Easter changes everything. It makes all things new. More than that: Easter has changed you and made you new. Because Jesus who was crucified for our transgressions is raised for our justification.

April 2017 April 2, 2017 – Fifth Sunday in Lent Psalm: 130; Epistle: Romans 8:1-11; Gospel: John 11:17-27, 38-53 “The Death of a Friend” - Sermon Text: John 11:17-27, 38-53 by Rev. Paul E. Shoemaker, Emanuel Lutheran Church ~ New Haven, IN The death of a loved one changes our world. Jesus had a friend who died and He felt great sorrow at the loss. The Good News is that Jesus has conquered death. As Jesus says, “He who believes in Me shall never die.”

April 9, 2017 – Palm Sunday/Sunday of the Passion Psalm: Psalm 118:19-29; Epistle: Philippians 2:5-11; Gospel: John 12:12-19 “Palm Sunday Exclamation” - Sermon Text: John 12:13b by Rev. Dr. Daniel J. Brege, St. Paul Lutheran Church ~ Decatur, IN On Palm Sunday the people shouted a profound exclamation: They were quoting from the Old Testament, they were labeling the work that Jesus was about to perform, and they were describing Christ's work among us now through Word and Sacrament: "Hosanna, Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord."

April 16, 2017 – The Resurrection of Our Lord – Easter Day Psalm: Psalm 118:15-29; Epistle: Acts 10:34-43; Gospel: Matthew 28:1-10 “This Is The Day!” - Sermon Text: Psalm 118:24 by Rev. Dr. Thomas R. Jesus’ Easter Sunday victory over death has changed your eternity as well as how you face each day of your life. “THIS IS THE DAY that the Lord has made” is a hope-filled, joy-filled reality because Jesus Christ IS risen!

April 23, 2017 – Second Sunday of Easter Psalm: Psalm 63:1-8; Epistle: 1 Peter 1:3-7; Gospel: John 20:19-31 “In Trials, Rejoice!” - Sermon Text: 1 Peter 1:3-7 by Rev. Dr. Walter A. Maier III, Concordia Theological Seminary ~ Fort Wayne, IN The apostle Peter encourages us to rejoice even in trials, and he tells us why we can do this. God has caused us to be born again to a living hope. Also, the genuineness of our faith is found through trials.
