verse of the month

Because He Lives ~ Pastor Ericrie n

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! That call and response between Pastor and Congregation begins Easter worship for hundreds of millions of worshippers around the world. It is a reminder of what the Christian faith is really all about. At Christmas people will often say “Let’s get back to the real meaning of Christmas”. Perhaps it’s time to re-examine the real meaning of Easter to capture its dynamic power for living. Most people want Jesus to be understanding and sympathetic with their life’s condition. The compassionate side of Jesus is wonderful and it’s good to know he understands and is sympathetic to what we’re going through and walks beside us in life. That should never be underestimated.

But, and this is INCREDIBLE—the real meaning of Easter is he dies for our sin and defeats death so that we can have everlasting life. The empathy and sympathy is wonderful but the real meaning of Easter is He overcomes not only His own death but yours and mine as well. If it’s only about empathy, sympathy and positive thinking there are lots of books and seminars on positive mental attitude, but they can’t defeat sin and death. One of my favorite hymns (it’s a giveaway as to my age) is called “BECAUSE HE LIVES”. Each verse of the hymn talks about different stages of life. After each verse the refrain says “Because He lives, I can face tomorrow. Because He lives, All fear is gone. Because He lives I know He holds the future, Life’s worth the living just because He lives.” The Good News of Easter is that He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! Wow, facing tomorrow, being fearless, knowing the future is secure and that life is worth living—now that’s the power of the God News of Jesus Christ this Easter! God bless you and I can’t wait to see you in Church this Sunday!! Pastor Eric

Upcoming Preaching Themes Wednesday, April 3—Lenten Worship Faith Testimony: Brad Hansen Sunday, 4/7/19 ~ Misplaced Confidence

Text: Philippians 3:-11 Theme: The Apostle Paul reminds us that no matter how good or bad we think we’ve been the most important thing is knowing Christ. It’s easy to become overconfident in the good things we’ve done as if they place us in a “special category” with God. Trustworthy confidence is when we place our life in God’s hands of grace. Questions to Think About as You Read:  What makes people think they can earn their way to heaven?  How much value does the passage put on “…knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”?

This is an EXCELLENT resource, check it out!

our mission Servant of Christ Mission Making Disciples We are committed in every aspect of life to encourage the ministry of the congregation and individuals to grow in the following biblical marks of discipleship: Prayer, Weekly Worship, Biblical Literacy, Spiritual Friendship, Serving and Giving

Wednesday, April 10—Lenten Worship Faith Testimony: Ted Harrison Palm Sunday Sunday, 4/14/19 ~ Looks Can Be Deceiving Palm Sunday Breakfast—9:45 am—12 Noon

Text: Mark 11:1-11 Theme: Jesus enters Jerusalem with great fanfare. The crowds cast their cloaks in front of him expecting him to be a political and military savior. He does not meet their expectation so what began with great fanfare is really the beginning of Holy Week. Questions to Think About as You Read:  When has Jesus not met your expectations?  When has he not been the kind of Savior that you wanted? Maundy Thursday, 4/18/19 ~ Why Maundy Thursday Matters ~ 7:00 pm

Text: John 13:1-17; 31-35 Theme: Let’s face it; Maundy Thursday is the forgotten day of Holy Week. Even most people who don’t go to church have heard of Good Friday and of course Easter. Yet Maundy Thursday sets the stage to truly understand who Jesus was as he went to the cross and who He still is today for us. Questions to Think About as You Read  Protestants have two Sacraments: Communion and Baptism. If there were a third Sacrament what do you think it would be?

Bringing Communion to People in Their Homes! Please let Pastor Eric or Pastor Melissa know if there is a Servant of Christ member unable to attend worship due to medical reasons. The Pastors would be happy to bring communion to them in their home. Just call the church office at 763-427-5070.

Good Friday Tenebrae Worship, 4/19/19 7:00 pm Special Event: 12 Hour Prayer Vigil (8:30 pm Friday —8:30 am Saturday) Easter Sunday Sunday, 4/21/19 ~ What If Truth Isn’t All Relative! Worship Services at 7:00, 8:00, 9:15 & 11:00 am Childcare available for infants through 3 years old at 8, 9:15 & 11 am

Text: Luke 24:1-12 Theme: If the events of Easter are really true then nothing is more important in life than trusting and believing in this incredible God. Questions to think about as you read:  What’s the difference between a nice tradition and life changing truth?  Honestly, which of the two in question #1 is Easter for you?

2 - SERVANT SPIRIT

worship & learning Upcoming Preaching Themes Sunday, 4/2819 ~ Doubting (insert name here)!

Text: John 20:19-31 Theme: Thomas isn’t the only one who ever doubted the presence of Christ. The Lord has given us some pretty special reminders that he remains with us. Questions to Think About as You Read  Why was Thomas consumed with seeing and touching Jesus in order to believe it was him?  When is doubt a good thing?

Lent Schedule & Testimonials Wed 4/3: Dinner 5:30 Worship 6:30 Testimony: Brad Hansen I had open heart surgery at the rip old age of 42. My story pertains to prayer and faith. After a particular Dr.’s appointment and procedure I awoke to my wife and cardiologist having a very serious discussion. Things were going to get real and real fast. I talked with God a lot along the path to this life altering surgery. After all I had plans. I discovered that what we think the plan is and what God has planned are not always the same. Wed. 4/10: Dinner 5:30 Worship 6:30 Testimony: Ted Harrison Although my entire life has been a search for answers, a search for a stronger faith, and I can give testimony to how I feel God helped me become one of the best collegiate football players in the country, led me into a successful business, kept my family together during hard times, or how God helped save our three year old son when he was hit by a drunk driver. The story I have to tell now is how God and faith guided me in getting rid of cancer. At a time when life was at its busiest my health started to fall apart. I associated it with age and lack of exercise. As I started listening to God and going into the directions he led me I was able to find I had cancer, what to do for it, and it eventually going away.

2019 Altar Flower Chart

In the half-light of dawn, in a graveyard, it might have been tempting to believe that their eyes were playing tricks. But the body the women had come to anoint was indeed gone, and the proclamation rang out through the eeriness and emptiness of the place: “He has risen.” Mary Magdalene and the other Mary fled from the tomb “with fear and great joy,” according to Matthew’s Gospel. It was a case of mixed emotions entirely appropriate to the occasion. The women were bursting to tell the news, and yet they were afraid of what had been revealed first to them. Before they ever reached the others, they encountered their risen Lord. He greeted them and then offered them the words of reassurance they most needed to hear: “Do not be afraid.” The words are common in the biblical story. At the time of Jesus’ birth, another time of uncommon joy and fear, Mary, Joseph, Zechariah, and the shepherds in the fields all received the words as reassurance. “Do not be afraid” was part of Jesus’ invitation to Peter to be a follower, and the same words rang out over a storm when the disciples became fearful and an overly brave Peter stepped out to walk on water. Jesus regularly reminded his followers not to fear their enemies or the uncertainties that lay ahead. He invited three trembling disciples at his Transfiguration to discard their fear, and said to the ruler of Jairus at his daughter’s healing, “Do not fear, only believe.”

The 2019 Altar flower chart is now available. Sign up on the Sunday you want to give flowers. The cost is $30.00 per Sunday. The flower chart is posted on the bulletin board in the Narthex.

After Jesus’ crucifixion, fear ran rampant among his followers. Joseph of Arimathea, owner of the tomb, asked Pilate for Jesus’ body “secretly for fear of the Jews.” Nicodemus came with spices to help prepare the body for burial, but only under the safe cover of night. And the inner circle of Jesus’ disciples, who had abandoned, and in Peter’s case even denied, their Lord, remained hidden behind closed doors.

Please sign your name and phone number on the chart, fill out a form with the wording you would like in the Sunday bulletin, and attach your form with cash/check payment and place them in the offering plate or turn them into the church office. Make checks payable to Servant of Christ and write Altar Flowers on the Memo Line.

Mary and Mary Magdalen loved with such perfect love that they shed their fear. Empowered by their faith and their encounter with the risen Christ, they ran on to proclaim what they had seen and what they knew to be true. As Jesus had reminded Jairus, they knew that they could not both believe and fear. They were among the first to know the truth that John later put into words. “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.” (1 John 4:18)

You are welcome to take the flowers you purchased home after the 2nd worship service or during the week. Thank you for your generous support.

4 - SERVANT SPIRIT

They challenge us to love and believe. To love Jesus with a perfect love and to believe in the power of his Resurrection. Certainly they grieved and experienced their hope flagging during the dark moments surrounding Jesus’ death. But they never lost their faith. It remained a small, steady flame that was fanned to brilliant, bold life in the light of that Easter dawn. Pastor Melissa Giving Just as you rely upon receiving income on a regular basis, Servant of Christ relies on your regular contributions. Servant of Christ appreciates the efforts of congregation members to make consistent donations throughout the year — especially during popular winter and summer travel periods. To assist you, the church provides a convenient electronic giving option for setting up regular contributions. Go to our website of www.servantofchrist.com for more details about Electronic and Online giving.

ministry & mission Your Gifts to SOC are Touching Lives Servant of Christ supports Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota. This ministry touches the lives of one in every 65 Minnesotans each year. Because of your generosity we get to partner with LSS to serve people in all 87 counties of our state in ways that inspire hope, change lives and build community in the name of Jesus. People like 110 year old Erna, who is able to stay in her home with the help of the Senior Nutrition Services. Or Diane, who, with the guidance of LSS’ Employment First program, found a fulfilling job where she is valued. And Lizzy, a young burn survivor who was able to attend Camp Knutson and flourish in the midst of other burn survivors. In Minneapolis alone through LSS we support 10 homes for people with disabilities, programs and services for youth and young adults experiencing homelessness, and meet the needs of thousands more in dozens of other ways!

May Bible Study asks the question: Why? Making Sense of God’s Will Tuesdays at 9:30 AM May, 7, 14, 21, 28 Wednesdays at 6:45PM May 8, 15, 22, 29 When the ground shakes, and a poor nation’s economy is destroyed; when the waters rise, washing away a community’s hopes and dreams; when a child suffers neglect and abuse; when violence tears apart nations; where is God? If God is all powerful, and if each one of us is a beloved child of God, then how can God allow tragedy and suffering to infest his creation? In Why? Making Sense of God's Will, best-selling author Adam Hamilton brings fresh insight to the age-old question of how to understand the will of God. Rejecting simplistic answers and unexamined assumptions, Hamilton addresses how we can comprehend God’s plan for the world and ourselves. 1. Why do the Innocent Suffer? 2. Why do My Prayers Go Unanswered?

Saturday Morning Men’s Study The Saturday Morning Men’s Ministry will meet on Saturday, April 20th in the Family Room in the back of the Sanctuary. Greetings!

Confirmation Rehearsal & Service Dates 9th graders – MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Rehearsal: Friday, May 17th from 6-8pm for Parents and Students. Pictures for students and small group leaders will be during the rehearsal (parents, bring checkbooks to order pictures that night). Service: Saturday, May 18th at 10am (students arrive at 9:15am). The service usually lasts about 1.5 hours.

TAKEOVER NIGHT Friday, April 12th What is a TAKEOVER night? It’s for all 7th-9th graders to come to SOC and takeover the church. We hang out and do, well, whatever we feel like doing. We’ve done church-wide Hide and Seek/Sardines, watched scary movies, played Vinball (a game that I created that is likely the best, most fun game in the universe), and played other games that people know and love. This is a great time to invite non-church friends to come and check out SOC.

FFE Notes During Lent Hey Confirmation families, remember that your student needs to complete 4 FFE notes during Lent in addition to the yearly 15 notes. FFE Notes are special notes on Wednesday nights and during Holy Week. They are not usually available via podcast, so make sure to show up this Lent and worship with us! The services are on Wednesday nights from 6:30-7:30 for the 5 weeks after Ash Wednesday.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ High School Seniors Take your mom to church on Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 12th) and get a blessing in return! A SENIOR BLESSING will take place at both services as we praise God for your educational efforts this far in life and celebrate a new chapter opening before you! 543 New ministry starting at SOC this summer for people age 18-25! Calvin & I are quite excited for what God has in store for this young adult community! Expect welcome, challenge, acceptance and encouragement as we uncover how God is working in the world! Probably Thursday evenings, assuredly awesome.. five forty-three. 8 - SERVANT SPIRIT
For a fun night in March, 11 of us crammed into a room hoping to solve the problems and get out before the clock hit 60 minutes! Thankfully, through the quick wits of our students and very few hints from the staff, we escaped with 12 minutes to spare! We celebrated our victory at DQ! Laughter dominated, and we all had a blast! Thanks to all for coming out, and I look forward to many more adventures with the senior high students! Wednesday nights are different during Lent. No regular Bible Study time, rather we worship with our SOC community, then gather in the Youth Room for a little while afterwards for Student Leadership Training! Not everyone is the same type of leader! We can’t all have the microphone, or write the right words! But each of us IS gifted at serving one another in some way! Come join us in the Youth Room immediately following the Wednesday night Lent services to explore what leadership means to you! This devo time will be spent getting to know our own gifts and how we can use them to make others feel welcomed and loved by Jesus! ALL 10th12th grade students are welcome! 1 in 9 people in the world doesn’t have enough to eat. All 9-12th graders are invited to an overnight retreat at Servant of Christ on Friday and Saturday, April 26th-27th. But…there’s more…students will fast from food for 30 hours straight. Why, you ask? Good question! Fasting as a spiritual practice helps people break free from the clutter of our world and focus on what matters to God. Fasting as a part of the 30 Hour Famine also helps students identify with the hungry children they’re helping — and learn about hunger in a memorable way. Through the Famine, students learn about real-world issues of poverty and injustice through the lens of the Bible, and they get the chance to make a real difference for hungry children. Plus, their own lives are transformed as they experience hunger firsthand — going without food so others don’t have to. Donate to our cause today! Just $40 feeds a child for a month! https://www.30hourfamine.org/participant/ ServantOfChrist Our students will gather together for a before-school breakfast at 6:30am, will only drink water and juice for the rest of the day. We’ll gather back at church at 7pm for activities, devos and games to learn about hunger. We will sleep on the floor of the church, wake up and continue to learn about hunger in a variety of ways until noon. At this time, we’ll go to a restaurant to end our fast together! Retreat cost is $30, but let me or Calvin know if you’d like some help with scholarship fund! Sign-up form required – online or in person. Trust me…this is worth it!
music ministry “Our God is the Lion, the Lion of Judah. He’s roaring with power and fighting our battles. And ev’ry knee will bow before Him. Our God is the Lamb, the Lamb that was slain. His blood breaks the chains. And ev’ry knee will bow before the Lion and the Lamb. Ev’ry knee will bow before Him.” Excerpt from the song called, The Lion and Lamb, by Benton Brown, Brian Johnson and Leeland Mooring
Greetings from the Contemporary Music team! We are very thankful and incredibly blessed to be able to share songs of God’s immense power in our lives and in the world. During the month of April we will be singing “The Lion and the Lamb” as our prelude to worship. One line in the song sticks with me. “Who can stop the Lord Almighty?” The answer is nothing! The Contemporary team will be leading Palm Sunday worship for both services on April 14th. Please come and join us to hear more about God’s unlimited power. He sent His only Son to enter our lives for a short time. The plan was implemented. God would sacrifice His son to redeem us from our sins. The Palm Sunday service will include music from our young people too. They will be singing “Hosanna, Jesus is King”, “Jesus is My Answer” and “Come to Jesus”. Thank you to Keira Moore for leading our young people in music on Sunday mornings. Having the youth sing during Sunday school, choir practice and church is another way for them to hear and learn of God’s mighty power. Thank you parents for encouraging your children to learn of God’s love through their studies and music.
Worship Hospitality Ministry Volunteer Recognition — April 28 If you have served in any of our Worship Services as a Worship Coordinator, Welcome Center Host, Greeter, Usher, Acolyte, Reader, Counter, Communion Server, Projectionist, Soundboard, Prayer Ministry and/or DonutsCoffee cup washers we would love to take a moment to say Thank You! for sharing your time and talent with us. We will be recognizing you and your volunteer service on Sunday, April 28 at both worship services. This thank you recognition is for anyone who volunteers every Sunday and for those who helped out for our seasonal worship services. Thank you all for your faithful commitment and support!
May God bless you this Lenten and Easter season. May the God of unlimited power speak in your life. May you be willing to share your story of God’s love and redemption with others who are thirsting for His love and power. Peace, Cathy Yseth
outreach & fellowship Servant Supper Sunday, April 28th from 5-6 pm Come eat or volunteer at our Servant Supper meal. Enjoy getting to know our guests and in that visiting time with one another there can be a deeper understanding of Christ’s love for all people. This meal is for those in need in the surrounding community and is open to everyone. Meal time is from 5-6:00 p.m. If there are other groups or a few families that want to volunteer in the future for a particular month we would love to have you. Meals are planned, you just need to cook and serve. Look for sign up on the bulletin board of opportunities.
Servant Schoolhouse Preschool It’s April, and the end of our school year is rapidly approaching! Our preschoolers are really starting to blossom this time of year. It truly is incredible to see their advancements since the fall in all academic, social, and spiritual aspects. We are so very proud of them all! Hopefully the weather will be warming up and we can get outside and enjoy all that spring has to offer. We will be looking for buds on the trees, grass turning green and flowers starting to bloom. Our cup of caterpillars will arrive this month! It’s always fun to see them transform into butterflies! If you are interested in having your child join the fun and learning that takes place at Servant Schoolhouse Preschool, please call Diane at 763-427-7765 for more information. If you haven’t noticed our bulletin board by the church entrance, check it out! Also, like us on Facebook to see the fun we have together!
Blessing of the Quilts Displayed in the Sanctuary in March were 340 quilts (including baby quilts) and 20 pillows that were made by the SOC Quilting Ladies. The quilts will be given to homeless youth/families that are in crisis, through the Anoka Hennepin School District; Bags of Love in Anoka County which includes children that are removed from parental meth homes; Barnone Boys School in St. Francis and North Country Community which administers a public health Maternal Child Family Home visitation program and serves NW MN including 9 counties and covers 11,402 square miles. It is underserved and has a higher than state average of persons living in poverty. A huge thanks to Thrivent and members/ friends of SOC for their monetary support. We will always accept donations of sheets and material. Our goal for next year is to give each new baby in Leech Lake Band of Ojibwa a quilt/blanket,(total of 100) plus the babies from all the other Counties. If you have questions or would like to help quilt please, call Sheri Buhmann at 763-464-2724 or Becky Panser @ 612-501-7722. A huge THANKS from North Country Community Health Center for the hundreds of quilts/blankets given us the past several years, the families that receive them are very excited and appreciate the caring and concern expressed from SOC family. Praise God for all of the gracious servants at SOC. Again thanks.
