“Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples . . .” (Mark 16:6) The Season of Lent will soon be over. Before we know it, we will be celebrating Holy Week in a few weeks and finally the greatest celebration of all – Easter! During that first Easter, some of the greatest good news was brought to people who had never heard it before. The angels told the women who came to the tomb, “go, tell his disciples.” Soon, within that very hour, the women would do that very thing. They would be speaking the words we ourselves are still speaking today, “Christ is risen!” The angels’ words, “go, tell his disciples” are as appropriate for us now as they ever have been and ever will be. As a congregation, don’t we “go and tell” every time we gather together for worship? We hear words of resurrection in our sermons, our hymns, our readings and our liturgies. We literally see the resurrection of our living Jesus as He still comes to us physically with His living sacrifice in the Lord’s Supper. As a congregation, we have a Learning Center whose one of the functions are to “go and tell.” We don’t host a Learning Center because we like to play with glue, or cut out animal shapes, or because we really love eating goldfish crackers. We have a Learning Center because every single day we get to “go and tell” the children about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, all done for them! In a world that is growing increasingly opposed towards Christianity and Jesus, our Learning Center is a shining light showing these children that Jesus died and rose again for them, loves them, and is still coming to them. May the Lord open our doors to bring more and more children to us so we may continue to, “go and tell.” As a congregation, as people who are loved by Christ, you yourself have been given an eternal treasure of Christ. As a baptized Christian, you have been given Jesus’ death and His resurrection (Romans 6). Now, “go and tell” yourself this every single day of your life. Remind yourself every single day what it is Jesus Christ has done for you so that you might also be able to share that good news with people in your own family, friends or coworkers. Martin Luther spoke about this need to “go and tell” ourselves about the work of Christ. In Luther’s “Morning Prayer” (which can be found in the “Daily Prayers” section of the Small Catechism) he recommended, when you wake up that you make the sign of the cross and then say this prayer in order to remind yourself that you are a child of God and God has placed a claim over you as His child. In short, Luther calls us to “go, and tell” ourselves all of the good things God has done for us in Christ as soon as we wake up in the morning. May we as a congregation always be a place and a people who “go and tell” the wonderful deeds of our Lord Jesus Christ who died for us to destroy our sin and rose from the dead to bring each of us everlasting life. Amen. — Pastor Meheret
