PARISH ROADMAP FOR EVANGELIZATION & DISCIPLESHIP Taking the next step forward as a parish community to more deeply live out evangelization

Our Mission: Be Disciples. Make Disciples. In welcoming all, we form disciples who know, love, and serve God and neighbor.

Who is a disciple? A disciple welcomes God's people, encounters Jesus Christ, grows in Jesus Christ, serves God's people, and shares the Gospel.

“COME, FOLLOW ME.” - MT. 4:19 | “GO, MAKE DISCIPLES.” - MT. 28:19

THIRD SCRUTINY Rite Addressing the Elect at 11:00 AM Mass April 7

Ordination to the Priesthood: Saturday, April 27! Rev. Br. David Dodd, TOR Franciscan Friars, Third Order Regular www.franciscanstor.org

“On this Fifth Sunday of our Lenten journey of conversion, God draws us to his Son, Jesus, the resurrection and the life. Today the Church throughout the world celebrates the third scrutiny with all those preparing for baptism at Easter. A scrutiny is meant to uncover and heal all that is sinful in their hearts, and to bring out and strengthen all that is good. The scrutiny is for all of us. We, like Lazarus, need healing and new life. Jesus, who has power over death, unties us from whatever binds us to death and sets us free.” Father Richard

On Saturday, April 27, Rev. Br. David Dodd, TOR, will be ordained a Catholic priest with the Franciscan Friars, TOR!

PASTOR’S VISION STATEMENT The Catholic Community of Good Shepherd is intentional about evangelizing and making disciples in the spirit of Saints Francis and Clare, especially by seeking out the lost in need of reconciliation and conversion of heart to God, the Church, to oneself and others, so that all may experience the peace and joy of a personal relationship with Jesus.

You may remember Br. David on a weekend visit during June 2017, while assisting at Steubenville Lone Star. He has great memories of Good Shepherd.

THIS WEEKEND! Sunday, April 7 12:30 - 2:30pm GSCC Upper Rm. Are you new at Good Shepherd, or do you want to learn how you can get connected with one of our various ministries? Come join us for our New Member Welcome Gathering! You will meet the priests, staff members, and ministry leaders from Good Shepherd as well as learn more about our parish and our mission. An optional tour of our church and campus will be provided as well. A light brunch will be served. No RSVP required! Whether you are a new member or a long-time parishioner seeking to get more involved, you are welcome to join us! We hope to see you there.

Last Weekend’s Mass Attendance 5:00pm: 732 | 9:00am: 1,038 | 11:00am: 1,012 | 4:00pm: 767 Total: 3,549

Br. David grew up in Nashville and met the friars while attending Franciscan University at Steubenville, OH (www.franciscan.edu). His experiences include campus ministry at University of Maryland, hospital ministry in Washington DC, and mission outreach coordination at Franciscan University. He currently serves as a transitional Deacon at St. Joseph’s in Herndon, VA. He also likes sports, BBQ, and Biblical Studies.

Please, keep Br. David in your prayers in preparation for this huge event for the Franciscan Friars! For information on vocations, contact Fr. Jason ([email protected]) or visit gscc.net/vocations, fwdioc.org/vocations, or franciscanstor.org. April 19 GOOD FRIDAY 2:00pm Stations of the Cross Join us in the church. 7:00pm Celebration of the Lord’s Passion The celebration of the Word, Veneration of the Cross, and Holy Communion make up the three parts of this liturgy commemorating our Lord’s suffering and death.

April 20 HOLY SATURDAY, VIGIL OF EASTER 8:30pm Mass - Only Mass of the Day - Mass begins outside with the lighting of the Easter Fire. If you’ve never attended the Easter Vigil, we strongly encourage you to make it a point to be here this year. It is the foundation of our faith. It is the reason for our being Church. All other worship flows from this high feast of the Church year. April 21 EASTER SUNDAY 7:00am, 9:00am, 11:00am, & 1:00pm Masses - Come celebrate the Lord’s Resurrection! (There will not be a 4:00pm Mass.)

Shepherd’s Teaching: The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Part 2) Part 1 was featured in our March 3, 2019 bulletin. View the entire teaching at gscc.net/shepherds-teachings Who forgives sin? “God alone can forgive sins.” (Mk. 2:7) “The Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth.” (Mk. 2:10) Jesus said to them, “‘Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.’” (Jn. 20:22-23); Jesus says to Peter: “I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Mt. 16:19); Jesus speaks to the Church: “Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Mt. 18:18); “All this is from God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ and given us the ministry of reconciliation. Entrusting to us the message of reconciliation, we are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us.” (2 Cor. 5:18-20); “Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” (Jas. 5:16) The seven Sacraments of the Church incarnate the physical presence of Christ in the world and make his presence real in the assembly of the Church. The Sacrament of Reconciliation cleanses us of sin after Baptism and heals our relationship to God, to others, and to ourselves in mutual forgiveness. “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” (Mt. 6:12); “We must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.” (Lk. 15:32) Why confess your sins to a priest? If a man or woman answers charges before a Judge in civil court for breaking the law by using illegal substances, their dialogue is instructive: “I took drugs myself and I didn’t hurt anybody else.” “Oh, but you did.” / “I asked God to forgive me and God did.” “Good, but you must do more.” / “You weakened the moral fiber of all society by your crime.” “You owe.” / Unlike a judge, the priest forgives sin in the name of Christ and the Church. What does the oral tradition of the Church tell us about the Sacrament of Reconciliation after Baptism has already forgiven all of our sins once? Need of ongoing conversion of heart and radical reorientation of our lives. Sin wounds our individual souls and the soul of the Church community. Sin damages our communion with God and our communion with Church. Sin can break, alienate and exclude us from the community of the Church. Sacrament of Reconciliation repairs, restores, and heals our communion. Sacrament of Reconciliation reintegrates us into our ecclesial communion. Sacrament of Reconciliation strengthens our Communion of the Saints. We are all incomplete without the Community of God and His Church. The priest is not the Master of God’s forgiveness, but he is its Servant.

Tell me about your ministry and what your ministry does. “My ministry is focused on Faith Formation grades K - 4. My responsibility is to give children ages K - 4 a good foundation of who Christ is, how much He loves them, and how to have a relationship with Him.” Why did you join this ministry? “I joined this ministry about 9 years ago when my middle son was in 2nd grade. This was an important year to volunteer due to all the Sacraments that he would be receiving that year. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton needed someone to step up and I felt a strong push by the Holy Spirit to teach. I taught 1st grade for five years and felt it would be a good way to continue my passion for teaching, but for the Church rather than the schools. After a couple of years teaching at SEAS, we moved our family to Good Shepherd. It was a better fit for our family and we instantly felt at home.” How have you GROWN in Christ through your ministry? “My relationship with Christ has grown tremendously through my Faith Formation ministry. I thought the Holy Spirit was leading me to teach children, but in fact He was leading me to further my relationship with Him. The more I taught, the more I hungered for more. There were so many children I taught that had never read the Bible and unfortunately didn’t go to church. As parents, we should be the most important teacher of our child’s faith and knowledge of Jesus! Kids need to hear about Jesus daily, pray daily, and read the Bible. There is nothing more important than your child’s salvation! My own children ages 18, 16, 15, and 10 have all deepened their faith as well due to my participation in Faith Formation. I definitely had to step up my game and put my words into action into my own children! My family has normalized prayer so much that we read the Bible together, we pray out loud together. We are constantly praying for people in need, illnesses, injuries, struggles, deaths, a more intimate relationship with Jesus, and God’s protection over our lives. My kids start every day with a short Scripture that I text all of them. The more we pray the stronger our family bond has become...God is so good!” How have you helped others GROW in Christ through your ministry? “I have taught many children over the years and feel my job is so important! I hope that all my kids over the years have grown more intimate with Christ and have dusted off their bibles and seen the real value in reading God’s Word every day in their lives. I think parents biggest weapon against the enemy is armoring their children with a faith and trust in our Savior, Lord, Jesus Christ and reading the Word of God!”
