ARTBA Roadway Construction Safety Academy II Building Professionalism in the Field December 7 – 11, 2009 Washington, DC ADVANCING YOUR CAREER IN SAFETY This five-day academy is aimed at giving your construction firm highly qualified safety training professionals. Attendees become accredited as instructors for the roadway construction-focused OSHA 500 Instructor Course, which qualifies them to teach your workforce the OSHA 10- and 30hour outreach classes). The program also includes flagger instructor certification and a package of high-quality training materials for use when participants return to the job. This intensive week-long program is designed to maximize learning opportunities for safety managers, foremen, supervisors and others with a wide range of practical experience. Participants are encouraged to learn from each other as well as from industry experts. At the end of the program, participants will take home training materials and experience that will be directly applicable when they return to their jobs.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND The five-day program is designed to raise the professional abilities of project safety managers, foremen, supervisors and other members of your company’s management team working in the road and bridge construction industry. The program offers valuable information to seasoned safety professionals as well as new safety managers looking for education and training experience and materials. To qualify to teach OSHA 10- and 30-Hour outreach courses, participants will need to complete the OSHA 510 course prior to attending this program.

PROGRAM CONTENT The program covers key areas and skill sets employed by successful leaders who effectively promote safety and productivity together. This adult learners’ course capitalizes on participant knowledge and features a variety of opportunities for participants to learn best practices from each other in addition to what they learn from the expert instructors. There are also ample opportunities for participants to explore on-the-job challenges and learn solutions that will help them achieve higher performance when they return to their employer.

TAKE-HOME TRAINING AIDS Upon successful completion of the Academy, participants will be provided with training materials including:  Instructional manual from the OSHA 500 course  OSHA 10-Hour Course for Roadway Construction Instructor Kit  Flagger Instructor Materials  Roadway Safety—an interactive training program for teaching new hires and conducting safety refresher training  Safety checklists for the roadway construction industry  A copy of the OSHA 1926 Construction Standards  A copy of parts 1, 5 & 6 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices

EARN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS (PDHs) Attendees of the Academy can earn up to 40 PDHs (each program varies in length). Upon successful completion of the program, each attendee will receive a certificate with the number of PDHs earned during the academy. ARTBA also maintains a copy of the record for verification

OSHA 500 COURSE: NATIONAL RESOURCE CENTER FOR OSHA TRAINING The OSHA 500 Course is offered through the National Resource Center for Occupational Safety and Health Training, in partnership with the Center to Protect Workers Rights. The National Resource Center employs instructors who are familiar with the challenges of the transportation construction industry. The OSHA 500 course is designed for personnel in the private sector interested in teaching the 10- and 30hour OSHA construction safety and health outreach program. This course allows the student to become a trainer in the Outreach Program and to conduct both a 10- and 30-hour construction safety and health courses and to issue cards to participants verifying course completion.
