(Ephesians 6:17)

ROMANS 9:14-33 As we look at ROMANS chapters 9- 11 we come to three chapters about Israel which speak  o f  Israel’s  past,   present,  and  future.  God’s  dealings  with  Israel  are  essential for us to understand, His faithfulness to them is proof of His promises being fulfilled to the believer today. (vv1-13) God will one day return to His program with His earthly people of Israel. Paul is teaching concerning election; Isaac over Ishmael and Jacob over Esau. (v14) “What  shall  we  say  then?  Is  there  unrighteousness with God? God forbid!”  as  is  Paul’s  style  in  this   letter, he introduces a question from a potential objector and then answers. We all tend to accuse God of unfairness because people assume that if He chooses some then He by necessity damns the rest; but Paul will have nothing to do with even the slightest accusation against God. ISAIAH 55:8-11; 1:10-20 God is Creator, we are merely His creation, and we must recognize that His ways are infinitely higher than ours. God says “Come   now  and  let  us  reason  together…”  the invitation is open for every sinner to think deeply on the things of God. ROMANS 1:16-25 God continually shows His reality to all people, God is indeed a righteous God. JAMES 1:1217 “…no  variableness,  neither  shadow  o f  turning…”   there is no darkness in God; we must grasp that when we study the doctrine of election. Paul will not water down his teaching on this subject to make it easier for an objector to ingest: (v15) “For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” God has the right to show mercy to whom He will; no one deserves it, no one can earn it. If left to ourselves all would perish for we are all guilty before God, and yet He extends the Gospel to all and some of these condemned people He shows infinite mercy and grace to! EXODUS 31:18 the Holy Spirit   quotes  God’s   words to Moses in Romans 9; as always we can learn so much when we go back to the Old Testament and glean from the circumstances with Israel (see ROMANS 15:4). Moses was up on Mt. Sinai for a long period, the people were growing impatient waiting for him, not even knowing if he would even return. EXODUS 32 (vv1-6) the people claim to be worshipping the Lord through means of the calf, and they  were   ‘playing’  immorally (vv7-10) God tells Moses of the immorality and false worship going on and states that  He  will   destroy  these  p eople;;  M oses’  reply  to  God   is   stunning (vv11-14) Moses intercedes for the people and God withholds His righteous judgment (vv15-20) idolatry should make us sick to our stomachs (vv21-35) Moses makes this incredible statement of love to God in intercession. The truth is all have sinned and are guilty before God EXODUS 33 (vv12-19) God makes the statement of showing mercy to whom He will; so again, who

can possibly find fault with God with that? Unless God shows mercy here, all of Israel must perish because of sin; there was no power left in man, God must reach out in mercy or all is over. JOHN 1 (vv1-14) God comes to us in mercy in the Person of Jesus Christ Who came into the world that He made (vv29-37) “Behold  the  Lamb  of  God!” JOHN 3 (vv12-16) God’s  initiative   of  making   mercy through the substitutionary death of the Messiah for us (vv17-21) all have forfeited life through sin, we are sinners totally unable to save ourselves JOHN 6 (vv35-47) Why did you believe God? God initiated it by first drawing you to Jesus and then saved you for His purposes. (vv15,16) we all have free will and our first choice is to reject  God.   Why  d oesn’t  God  choose  everybody? The real question: why He chooses anybody! Don’t  forget   “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be  saved.”  (ACTS  2:21)   (vv17,18) there is no hint in Scripture that Pharaoh was doomed to damnation by God, but was a wicked and heartless man and his cruelty hardened his heart to the plight of the Jews. As any person continues to harden his heart to  God’s  grace,  God   simply  gives  them  over  to   themselves (see ROMANS 1:19-28). (vv19-24) “Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it,  Why  hast  thou  made  me  thus?” we must take this same attitude whenever we think on the deep things of God. We are sinful creatures, to attempt to find fault with an infinite and perfect Creator is arrogant and sinful. God desires all to be saved, but we must turn from our wickedness. 1 TIMOTHY 2:4 “Who  would  have  all   men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”  EZEKIEL 33:11 “As  I  live,  saith  the  LORD,   I   have not pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from  his  way  and  live.” (vv25-29) God has always chosen a remnant, the only reason  Israel  has  s urvived  is  because  o f  God’s  grace.   God’s  work   of  judgment  was  shown  in  Israel’s  captivity   in Babylon, and the judgment of the future Tribulation also seems to be in view. Judgment is a short work by God compared with the eternal glory that is coming. (vv30-33) the reason Israel as a whole has not been saved is because they have rejected Jesus as their Messiah and Savior. The same thing must be said for all of mankind through the ages; the Bible is clear, Jesus is the only  answer  for  sin!  The  Jews  and  o ther  ‘religious’   people all go about trying to make their own righteousness with God; God says that this is impossible. Jesus is God’s  only  righteousness!  ROMANS 3:19-29; MATTHEW 16:13-16 who do you say that Jesus is?
