How did we come to this? nCurrent

state of affairs nLack of civility nHeightened racial tensions nWhat happened to post-__________America?

Goals of this study nLook

at passages in scripture that deal with race and ethnicity nWe are looking at passages that are of particular interest to people of color nDealing with the topic through a particular lens

Who are we? nAmericans nMajority

people of color nThese very terms are specific to our context nOur identity and context shapes the way we read scripture

nScripture

has been used in US history to justify oppression nReligion has been complicit in slavery, segregation, inequality, mass incarceration, etc.

n Some

of us enter the discussion wounded n In search of validation and healing n Clarification – what does scripture really say? n Recovery n Place in the narrative n Affirmation

Two things… Set the record straight around biblical interpretation n Gain an understanding about the geographical, social, ethnic world from which the Bible comes 1.

2.

Look at story of Israel and its construction of identity so that we can understand what is going on in scripture and what is going on in our context

n Scripture

means on multiple levels –Adam and Eve blaming –Family dysfunction in Jacob’s family

Identity as construct n Biblical

narrative n Universal History n 1 common ancestor n Flood n Noah – 3 sons n Segmented genealolgy…nations

n Segmented

genealolgy and story of Babel sets us up for story of Abram and Israel n Characters mean on more than one level n Jacob=Israel n Esau=Edom

God’s promise to Abram n Genesis

12:1 n Great nation n Land n Blessing

Israel’s identity is based on… n Covenant

–chosen n Territory n Collective History n Kinship

nIsrael’s

story is one of increasing separation and boundaries nInformed by exile and experience as an underdog

Who is chosen? nAbraham

– 2nd born nJacob – 2nd born nJoseph - #11/12 nIsaac

Why? nTheological

question… nHow does Israel answer it in the ancestral narratives?

Jacob and Esau nGenesis

25:19-34 nGenesis 27:1-28:5 nGenesis 33

Jacob and Esau nGenesis

25:19-34 nGenesis 27:1-28:5 nGenesis 33

Two Questions… n Who

is the other? n What do we do with her/him? n How we respond has everything to do with our understanding of God’s economy – scarcity or grace?
