Ascend Welcomes International Visitors HOUSTON – May 3, 2012 — Five women from Africa visited Ascend’s Pensacola facility on May 2 as part of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. Ascend partnered with the Gulf Coast Diplomacy Council to host the group of five women from Angola, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda. “It was fascinating to hear these women share about their work and engineering experience as we shared our own,” said Tim Montgomery, Ascend’s Pensacola plant manager. “Bridging language and cultural differences, we were able to talk with them about our manufacturing practices. It was a wonderful way to encourage the development of the engineering profession around the globe.” Their visit to the U.S. focused on women’s innovation in science and engineering, including lunch, a plant tour and a discussion on corporate responsibility and environmental safeguards. “I was honored to host the event and hear about their experiences as women from around the globe,” said Nikki Owens-Huffman, Ascend business unit leader. “Their educational experiences varied greatly from each other and from my own, and yet we shared so much in common. We are women and engineers who have similar concerns about our families and our careers.” The International Visitor Leadership Program was launched in 1940 and is a professional exchange program that seeks to build mutual understanding between the U.S. and other nations through carefully designed short-term visits to the U.S. for current and emerging foreign leaders. More than 5,000 international visitors come to the U.S. from all over the world each year.
