Aspirin Compounds All patients having surgery must stop taking aspirin, aspirin-containing compounds, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) 7 days prior to surgery. These drugs interfere with normal platelet function and can lead to bleeding problems. You can take acetaminophen (Tylenol) as needed prior to surgery. If you need another medicine for pain control prior to surgery, notify your doctor. You should also stop herbal supplements which increase bleeding risk. Common aspirin-containing or aspirin-like products to avoid:
