The precision Swiss made micro­ p i p e t t e u n i t has a machined plunger and barrel assembly cali­ brated to a fixed volume which is dispensed with a tolerance of ± 1% for accuracy of sample size and reproducibility. The liquid sample is drawn only into the disposable polypropylene tip and does not enter the pipette itself. The sealed v o l u m e t r i c u n i t is housed in a p r e c i s i o n g r o u n d glass barrel giving the required protection. The exclusive design of the micropipette allows the unit to function without the use of an O-Ring. Volumetric errors due to O-Ring malfunction and wear are thus eliminated. The micropipette requires prac­ tically no maintenance since its unique construction without an O-Ring makes l u b r i c a t i o n u n ­ necessary. The Elkay "Socorex" micropipette has a slim line with an outer di­ ameter of 14mm. which allows in­ sertion into long test tubes.

chromatographic methods which have become predominant in the more recent literature. Many of the methods described will certainly be useful in laboratories where spectrometers and chromatographs are not available or in cases where only a few determinations are to be made, but I think that in many cases, some form of a gas chromatographic procedure would be simpler and better than many of the procedures described. The procedures are usually described in sufficient detail to enable an analytical chemist to use the method without going to the original literature. In many cases, the preparation or availability of reagents is noted in the procedure description. Useful detailed instructions for calculating results are often included. A number of tables provide lists of compounds which have or have not given satisfactory results with the various methods. The author has succeeded in his aim of writing a useful compendium limited mainly to chemical methods. However, I cannot help feeling that the book would be more valuable if chromatographic and spectroscopic methods had been included.

chapters discuss the physical properties of the excited states of coordination compounds. Chapters 3 and 4 deal with the charge-transfer and substitution photochemistries of the first row transition metal ions. Chapters 5-9 treat the photochemistry of the heavier elements, carbonyl and related complexes, certain families of chelates, simple ions in solution, and complexes in the solid state. A final chapter deals briefly with some concepts regarding photochromism and chemiluminescence.
