Exploring Kansas Outdoors: A Walk with Dad

More often than not, a person’s love of the outdoors, especially hunting and trapping is fostered by their father or a father figure in their young life. I’ve grown used to being an exception to the rule, which applies in this case as well. Don’t get me wrong, our dad loves the outdoors, but was never a hunter or trapper. My brother lives on 200 acres of Ohio wilderness and Dad loves roaming the many trails that weave and meander through his place. He loves to be there at my brother’s for the annual (Continued on page 24)

Laugh tracks in the dust: Broke and not feeling well I should have known better than to tempt fate. You’ll recall that two weeks ago I wrote that electric garage door openers and computers were, in my humble opinion, the two most aggravating, supposedly labor-saving, contrivances ever invented by man. At the time my garage door openers were giving me expensive fits. Well, the garage door (Continued on page 22)

PRATT – You’re not seeing double and that’s not a typo. Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) Fisheries Division staff will provide trout anglers with more fish, more often this season. In years past, KDWPT-managed trout waters would receive four stockings of fish over the course of the trout season. This year, KDWPT-managed trout waters will receive two extra stockings, reducing the amount of time between each stocking. To sweeten the deal even more, 22-percent more trout will be stocked this year statewide. Waters set to receive (Continued on page 29)

The Covered Dish: Sweet Potato Pecan Pie

This past week has been quite a ride in the weather department. Felt like we went from short sleeves and sunshine to parkas, gloves and insulated bibs! You know what they say about Missouri? If you don’t like the weather just give it a couple of hours. I hate to confess that I adore the cold weather and bundling up to keep warm. Last week I promised I was going to run my apple kuchen this week. Well yours truly came home and left the recipe at the office. It’s not enough that I’ve made it several times in the past few weeks. Don’t fret, you will not be disappointed with the sweet potato pecan pie. This recipe will definitely give you something ‘new’ for the fall season or Thanksgiving. The biggest lesson learned from this recipe is that different species of sweet potatoes can certainly change the outcome of a pie. One morning while baking this pie the pecans did not

raise to the top of the pie. Instead they were at the bottom. On this particular day we had noticed how very firm and dense the potatoes were after cooking. If you ever find the meal extremely thick and rather dry you may need to add a bit of water to the potato pulp. It’s important to note that in most grocery stores you will not find any true ‘yams’. Unfortunately, many people confuse the sweet potato and yam. Often, they think that ‘yam’ is just another name for the sweet potato, wrong! In order to find a true yam you would have to shop in an international market. Approximately 95% of all yams are grown in Africa and the remaining9/20 are harvested in Asia. Many, many years ago when African Americans came to this country they referred to the ‘soft’ sweet potatoes as a yam. Because it was soft like the yams from Africa. In Africa alone, there are

In medium skillet on medium-high heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil. Add pasta; cook and stir 2-3 minutes, or until light golden brown. Stir in broth and 1 cup sauce; bring to boil. Reduce heat to low; cover. Cook 4 minutes, or until pasta is al dente, stirring occasionally. Remove from

heat; cool slightly. Stir in cheese, almonds and 1/4 cup mint. Brush outsides of peppers with remaining oil. Grill 4-6 minutes, or until crisp tender and lightly marked on all sides, turning frequently; cool slightly. Place peppers in center of 12-by-12-inch square of heavy duty foil. Bring sides of foil up and shape foil around each pepper, leaving tops open. Shape foil into stable base to secure peppers firmly. Keep upright while grilling. Fill each pepper with 1 tablespoon sauce and about 3/4 cup orzo mixture. Grill peppers 8-10 minutes, or until filling is heated through. Remove from foil. Warm remaining sauce. Sprinkle with remaining mint before serving with warmed sauce. To prepare peppers: Heat oven to 400 F. Prepare orzo mixture as directed but do not grill peppers. Fill raw peppers with orzo mixture and place on foil squares. Bring sides of foil up and seal tops to fully enclose each pepper. Arrange on rimmed baking sheet and bake 20-25 minutes, or until peppers are soft and filling is heated through.

sugar 3 whole cloves 1 strip orange peel 2 green apples, sliced

In large saucepan, mix sangria, apple cider, liqueur, cinnamon sticks, brown sugar, cloves and orange peel. Bring to simmer over medium heat and cook, stirring, 5 minutes, or until sugar dissolves. Stir in apples and simmer additional 5 minutes. Serve warm with desired garnishes. While it may seem like time to swap the tiki drinks and frozen cocktails for hot toddies and spiked ciders, fall doesn’t mean you must say goodbye to warm-weather favorites. Put an autumn twist on go-to drinks by adding in fall spices. This easy mulled sangria recipe is perfect for sharing with friends at outdoor celebrations.

number. The Maxwell Wildlife Refuge, 6 miles north of Canton in McPherson County, is managed to preserve the area’s prairie heritage and herds of bison and elk are maintained, both native to Kansas grasslands. The primary public use on the 2,500-acre refuge is wildlife viewing. The habitat can support only a certain number of animals, so each fall, surplus bison are sold at a public auction. This year, 40 bison will be auctioned, including 10 two-year-old bulls, four cows, eight yearling heifers, eight yearling bulls, five heifer calves, and five bull calves. Bison older than a year will be brucellosis and tuberculosis tested and accompanied by a health certificate. Heifer calves will be vaccinated for brucellosis and certificates issued. Cash and personal checks (if accompanied by a notarized authorization letter from the issuing bank) will be accepted. KDWPT reserves the right to reject any or all bids. Buyers must pick up bison the day of the sale or make arrangements with the refuge manager prior to the sale. Animals become the buyer’s responsibility upon settlement on sale day. Load-out assistance is available until dusk the day of the sale. Stock racks and trailers should be covered or lined because bison transport best in dark conditions. The sale will be outside and will take place rain or shine, so attendees are encouraged to dress accordingly. For more information, contact Maxwell Wildlife Refuge manager Cliff Peterson at (620) 6284592 or the KDWPT Region 3 Office in Wichita at (316) 6838069.

Top Western Athletes From Nine States Headed To United Rodeo Association Finals This Weekend The pressure’s on for top cowboys and cowgirls competing in the United Rodeo Association (URA). “Top 15 contestants in each of the nine sanctioned events throughout the past year will compete in the URA Finals this weekend,” according to Muff McGee, longtime URA secretary. Set for Domer Arena at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, performances are planned Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 3-4-5, McGee informed. The rodeo is Friday and Saturday evenings, Nov. 3 and 4, beginning 7 o’clock, with the Sunday matinee starting at noon. Additional URA activities have been scheduled as well. A rodeo judging clinic is Saturday morning at 10 o’clock, cowboy church is Sunday morning at 9 o’clock, and awards will be presented followed Sunday afternoon’s rodeo. “The United Rodeo Association is a non-profit organization established in 1962 that sanctions rodeos primarily in the nine state area of Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wisconsin,” McGee said.

Events include bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, women’s barrel racing, calf roping, forty and over calf roping, breakaway roping, steer wrestling and team roping. “With more than 800 members each of the past few years, the URA annually approves or co-approves an average of more than 100 rodeos,” McGee said. “Our strength is in giving solid support to regional rodeo within our established territory,” she emphasized. “We continue to grow on that basis. “Our primary goal is to work cooperatively with committees, stock contractors, members and contestants for our mutual success,” McGee continued. The all-around title race is very close among three competitors this year, McGee pointed out. Jesse Boos, White Cloud, competes in breakaway roping and team roping, and is also in the lead for the Rookie of the Year title. Bailie Schuldt, Leon, Iowa, competes in breakaway roping, barrel racing and also team ropes, but is not team roping at the finals. Danni Clover, Clifton GO-KARTS STARTING AT

Visiting Dignitaries Like chuck-line riding cowboys of yesteryear, they go from ranch to ranch, carrying the news and performing a job no one else wants, let alone can do. Other than a few cowboy poets and purebred bull auctioneers, they are the only celebrities we have in the cow business. These VIP’s rank above truck drivers, hay balers, farm advisors, and bankers in status and these coveralled celebrities play a leading role at every ranch, feedlot or auction market in the country. Of course, I’m referring to large animal veterinarians who keep our animals healthy and us informed. When these friends come to the ranch to preg check, bangs heifers, or treat a horse for colic they receive visiting dignitary status. Life on a big ranch can get lonely, with little contact with the outside world so when a vet honors you with

Riding Hard By Lee Pitts a visit the cow boss might even shave and the lady of the manor might bake up a batch of her delicious chocolate chip cookies. I’ve never met a bad vet but there are degrees of greatness and there are ways to tell if you are lucky enough to have a rock star vet. The best way to tell is if they’re late. The great ones always are. If your vet is always prompt I’d be saving up to buy a backhoe to bury all his or her mistakes. And remember, good vets drive dirty trucks; the dirtier the truck, the better the vet. I’ve found that good vets, like good welders, can be a bit on the grumpy side. I don’t know if it’s the pain from a broken knee cap a cow gave them, or if it’s genetic. Maybe they’re just mad at

themselves for becoming a large animal vet instead of specializing in small animals where they could work in air conditioned comfort and the biggest danger is an ankle-biting dachshund. Great vets are rarely closely shaven and if yours looks like he’s been up since two am, he probably has. Large animal vets vets don’t wear neckties to work and if your lady vet comes wearing freshly starched coveralls and

clean rubber boots I’d start that backhoe up if I were you. Most great vets are humble folk but you’d be surprised how many have vanity license plates with self-deprecating messages like Golden Arm, Cow Doc or Horse Kilr. Good cow doctors aren’t much for small talk. Mostly they speak in grunts. They don’t take vacations, have few hobbies and they don’t team rope. Not that they can’t, it’s just that if they rope some-

thing they ALWAYS want to get paid for it, not just when they win a jackpot somewhere. Good vets don’t bring their dog with them and don’t be surprised to see one holding their phone with one hand giving advice to another rancher while their other arm is up

the rear end of one of your cows. They are great multi-taskers. One reason vets are late is because they had to fix a squeeze chute on the fly with rusty baling wire at the visit before yours. My vet was never too busy to float a horse’s teeth,

In offering a prognosis, unlike an M.D., they are brutally honest and they don’t use a big word when a smaller one will do just fine. If you pay close attention you’ll learn more practical knowledge from your vet than you did in four years of college. After several years in the business your vet may appear jaded

Topics include confined cow feeding, using corn residue, cover crops and annual forage systems. “Agricultural land usage in the central plains region has been changing over the past decade and as such cattle producers need to be inventive about management practices so that they can maintain cattle numbers for their livelihood,” said Jaymelynn Farney, beef systems specialist with K-State Research and Extension. “Perennial pastures are one of the diminishing resources for cattle operations as often these pasture lands are being converted into cropland or used in urban living.”

That great flying feeling There’s not much better feeling than flying through the air with the greatest of ease. Trapeze artists of long ago likely came up that description made popular in early day movies. The Wright brothers knew it, too, when they went about inventing the airplane. Lots of people get a thrill flying in a wide variety of ways. Of course, airplanes and helicopters, but also air balloons, and those little one-person flying gizmos. Haven’t heard as much about zip cords lately, but the brave ones like flying off mountains and across the valleys on a cable. It’s certainly a sensation and unique thrill of sorts riding a horse jumping over fences. A couple of decades back, opportunity to follow the hounds in a fox hunt through the

prairie hills lit the fire. There were two routes, higher fences for longtime traditionalists, and then foot or so high jumps for weakof-heart beginners. Shortly after, Western jump was added as a speed event on some horse show bills. The Wonderful Zane made it over 18-inch obstacles just fine. After determining to ride in English tacked competitions, there were seldom but a couple entries in the hunter hack class. So, why not see if Maggie would jump upon request and enter that event as well? First time to the 18-inch practice fence, she sashayed away, but on the second try easily went gliding over. When the pole was hiked another six-inches, the buckskin mare tried but didn’t make it. A back leg hung up and knocked the fence

down. A few more practice attempts, and the pretty horse got the hang of what was expected and seemed to enjoy jumping. Class itself is actually just going over two 24-inch fences, and then riding like in English pleasure. First official out had beginner’s luck and beat a handful of the old pros. Other shows offer jumping classes with eight fences in a pattern, so tried that, too. Entering it for a while now with only occasional down rail. Have even collected a couple blues, but happiest when the judge said: “Maggie sure can jump.” Inspired by the ole world champion blonde lady jumper, am considering going higher through the air. Reminded of Revelation 14:6: “An angel flies through the air preaching eternal gospel to every nation, tribe, language and people.”

Rural Messenger (Continued from page 1) who go through farm fields like this after growers have harvested their crops to glean whatever is left of the still-nutritious, healthy fruits and vegetables, keeping them from going to waste. Then, they donate them to agencies that serve hungry people, primarily in the greater Kansas City area. This year, the K-State horticulture center donated 16,163 pounds of vegetables, up from 3,450 pounds in 2016. “Our volunteers glean after the harvest, picking what’s left in farmers’ fields and picking up already harvested leftover produce,” said Lisa Ousley, executive director of After the Harvest. “The majority of the funds we raise help secure semi-truckloads of donated produce that might otherwise end up in landfills. After the Harvest is the largest produce donor to Harvesters - Community Food Network.” In K-State’s case, the produce is left over from vegetable research trials conducted at the center, which is located a few miles west of Olathe. “We’ve got a bunch of different research projects going on right now and as a result, we’ve been harvesting tons of produce all summer,” said Cary Rivard, K-State associate professor of horticulture and the center’s director. “Most of the research trials are supported by USDA-NIFA grant programs and seek to help our local vegetable farmers improve their productivity, sustainability, or the nutritional quality of their produce.” “It’s not within our mission to sell produce from our trials, so we are excited to have such a great partnership with After

November 1, 2017 the Harvest,” Rivard said. “I’ve worked at research stations in other states that simply compost their produce due to the added time and energy it takes to distribute it before it rots. This collaboration allows us to be able to give back to the community while still accomplishing our mission of helping vegetable farmers in our area to build the local food system.” Rivard credited graduate student Zac Hoppenstedt with making the initial connection with After the Harvest. Hoppenstedt is earning a master’s degree in horticulture with an emphasis in urban food systems through K-State Olathe. With the help of a specially-outfitted van called The Glean Machine, After the Harvest volunteers made 17 trips to the K-State location this year to gather vegetables once the university’s staff and graduate students had harvested what they needed for their research projects. “It is growers like the K-State Olathe Horticulture Research and Extension Center who make a real difference in eliminating food waste and providing our hungry neighbors with nutritious, healthy food,” Ousley said. “We cannot thank them enough for making the call to After the Harvest when there is excess produce so that our gleaners can harvest it and bring it to those who need it most.” More information about After the Harvest is available at aftertheharvestkc.org. Special Commission Big Game Permits Fund Conservation 2018. The Commission Big Game Permit program began in 2006, and since that first year, nearly $500,000 has been raised. One elk, one antelope or up to seven deer permits are issued each year, depending on applicant preference. Winning groups are issued a voucher, which they can sell or auction to the highest bidder. The cost of the permit, and 15 percent of the total price, is subtracted and kept by the group, and the rest is remitted to KDWPT with a proposal for a conservation project. Once the project is approved, the money is returned to the

Local chapters of nonprofit organizations based or operating in Kansas that actively promote wildlife conservation and the hunting and fishing heritage are eligible to apply. openers started working fine and I thought my troubles were over, but, no-o-o-o, I should have known better. Sure enuf, last Tuesday, my formerly-trusty eight-year-old Apple

computer shot craps while I wuz reading an online news story — I mean kaput, finished, done, fried, frozen up. It wouldn’t restart, restore, or reboot. So, Wednesday morning, I ended up taking the broken contraption to the computer hospital in Kansas City where I left it for hopeful repair and returned home — total round trip 230 miles. The next day the computer doctor called and declared my computer wuz in a permanent, electronically-induced computer coma and it would take $400 of parts and

labor, plus five working days, to get it fixed. So, on Friday, ol’ Nevah and I headed for KC at 8 a.m., and after talking to the computer doctor decided it made more sense to simply buy a new computer and have the data transferred from my old hard drive to the new computer. Problem wuz, apparently my backup system on the old computer had not done its job since March of 2016. Well, it took all day for the computer doctor to transfer data from my backup and from my old hard drive. I think most of my data wuz saved, but I’m not sure about that. While we were waiting in KC for the new computer to be finalized, we went to the Oak Park Mall to spend some time at a Barnes and Noble bookstore, stroll around the mall, eat at the food court, and watch the upstanding citizens of Kansas City at their shopping leisure. Folks, I felt like an alien in my own

country. I clearly didn’t fit in. I also had a first hand opportunity to watch the computer/ information technology slice of humanity at work at the computer doctor store. All those folks — while helpful and friendly — were clearly living in a different world than I am. After spending nearly all of two days in Kansas City, spending $1,700 for the new computer and labor costs, traveling almost 500 miles, we arrived home last night at 8:30 p.m. Surprisingly, at least to me, the new computer is working well enuf this morning (Saturday) that I’m getting this column written. I hope I never get the urge to tempt fate again. *** Here’s a funny true story. My good county extension agent friend, ol’ Avery Ware, has a son Noah Ware who lives in Wichita. Well, Noah and his good wife attended last week’s football game at Bea

Wilder U and on their way home they stopped at a convenience store to use the restrooms and buy a couple of snacks. Noah looked over the array of pre-packaged foods available and selected what he thought wuz a Slim Jim — a hard, spicym dried-up, hotdog-looking snack. When his wife saw what Noah had picked for his snack, she thought it looked tasty and decided to get a Slim Jim, too. However, within a few seconds she came back to the cash register counter laughing like the dickens. “Noah,” she said, “You’re getting ready to eat a doggie treat.” Sure enuf. Noah came within a whisker of chowing down a treat made for a dog. Another good example of a reckless man being saved by an observant wife. *** I squeezed in the time this week between trips to Kansas City to do a sad job for me. I picked all the ripe and green tomatoes and all the peppers before the predicted hard frost and tore down the tomato trellises and planted the gardens to

November 1, 2017 “chicken greens” for the winter. We did have a hard frost last night, so I suspect the cold weather will set back the chicken greens. They may not even sprout until spring. We’ll see. I gave all the tomatoes and peppers to my neighbors and some folks in town who can use the extra groceries. I saved enuf tomatoes and peppers for a couple of weeks, but it’s sad to realize that the next homegrown tomatoes are at least nine months away. *** Well, this column came real close to not being written at all. So, I’m gonna sign off for the week with some astute observations about life. • The closest most folks ever get to a 4.0 during college is their blood alcohol content. • I live in my own little world, but it’s OK. Everyone knows me there and accepts me for the way I am. • I don’t do drugs. I get the same effect by just standing up really fast. • I don’t like political jokes. I’ve seen too many get elected from both parties. (Continued on page 23)

• The most precious thing we all have is life, yet it has no tradein value. • If life deals you lemons, make lemonade. If life deals you

tomatoes, make Bloody Marys. • Isn’t having a smoking section in a public place like having a peeing section in a swimming pool?

family deer hunt that happens every November. Dad used to take me fishing when I was little; we’d walk to a couple ponds just up the road and catch bullheads and bass. I remember him taking me pheasant hunting one time, probably because I pestered him until he did. Other than that, he never took any of us hunting or trapping, I think because his dad didn’t hunt or trap and our dad just never got bitten by those bugs. I have to believe that our families hunting “genes” come from our

grandfather Hosafros (our mother’s father) who made many trips to Wyoming to hunt deer, elk and moose. In 1961 he harvested a moose that’s in the Boone and Crocket

record book (records of American big game animals taken with firearms.) But my brother and I first hunted deer with a motley crew of neighbor guys where we lived in north-central

Ohio; the Beck family, whose numbers no one ever really knew, and Dave Burt, a local cop who lived on the road behind our farm. We’d gather in Dave’s (Continued on page 25)

Page 25 (Continued from page 24) kitchen for coffee and hot cocoa, and inevitably someone would spot a deer crossing the road and the hunt was on. I remember how jealous I was when my brother, who’s 11 years my junior harvested his first deer before I did and on my farm no less. Today he’s still the better deer hunter. Our love of trapping began when I was in junior high as an older man named Mr. Wolf allowed me to tag along when he checked traps he had on our land. He helped me put together a few ragtag traps and the following year I trapped in the creek that

ran through our place. Later in high school I caught muskrats and the occasional mink in a pond Dad had built and in local creeks, and snagged a few fox on land surrounding our place. When my brother was old enough and had also been bitten by the trapping bug, I gave him Dad’s pond to trap where he also caught muskrats, mink and coon. As I said, even though our families love for hunting and trapping can’t be attributed directly to our father, at 91 he still loves the outdoors. So, this week, to log a little “Dad” time for myself and to get him out of

his retirement home apartment, I swooped him up and we headed to the McPherson Valley Wetlands for a hike. The trails had recently been mowed making the walking easy, but I had to measure my steps so my long legs didn’t out-distance him. We stopped on the first rise Exploring Kansas Outdoors By Steve Gilliland and I pointed out all [email protected] the marshes that were now dry and the ones still make out a muskrat that still held water. trail in the mud that Next we meandered led from one big bunch down into one dry pool of cattails to another. along the trail where I A little further and we had trapped muskrats topped the dike along last winter. We looked the drainage ditch that over a now flattened runs nearly a mile to muskrat hut that had the next road and drains once seemed as big as a all the marshes along Volkswagen. We could the way, but was now so dry the ducks have to hitchhike down it. Just behind us the drainage split as it made its way around a large grove of trees. Last winter at that place was a long beaver dam that had since been demolished with heavy equipment. We stepped over the left over rubble from the dam and down into the dry drainage ditch. It was fascinating to think that last winter the water was deep enough where we stood that I hesitated to wade into it with chest waders. We found a beaver den or two dug into the bank deep in the bottom of the dry drainage. Bottles, tree limbs and strangely enough a bright yellow golf ball all lay in the mud waiting to be covered once again when the rain comes. The grove of trees harbors mammoth cottonwoods probably as old as dad and I together. We clamored up out of the dry ditch, meandered through the trees and onto the road that led us back to the truck. Dad’s pace was noticeably slower then, and I think he was glad he’d hauled along his favorite walkin’ stick. Yes, I used to wish Dad had taken us kids hunting and trapping, but I’m just glad he still enjoys nature. So even if your dad (or mom) is not a hunter or trapper, go snag them sometime and take them for a hike in God’s Creation and help them enjoy their twilight years Exploring Kansas Outdoors! ROGER'S VIEW FROM THE HILLS: MATH “EDUCATION IS WHAT REMAINS AFTER ONE HAS FORGOTTEN WHAT ONE HAS LEARNED IN SCHOOL.” Albert Einstein I had a conversation with a friend not long ago whose daughter is a math teacher. She said her daughter was very upset from taking classes to learn how to teach the latest version of math. She is not only upset at the new standards because it will cause students to become very frustrated, plus it will cause school districts to spend millions of dollars statewide to buy all the new books and materials for the course. It also is frustrating for the teacher in the fact that there has not been a COLA in their salaries in five years and the last raise they had was offset by increases in other things like insurance. My first impression is that the Common Core curriculum has

Roger's View From The Hills been renamed and recycled. It was a furor in past years as to the ridiculous procedures that was required of students to take a problem and learn a new formula that was over complicated and unnecessary. I have written in years past about the Common Core curriculum that were being forced on school and how it was not only over complicating subjects for students but revising history and creating very hard circumstances for parents to assist on homework. In most states the Common Core was rejected but it has been re-named

November 1, 2017 going into jobs with no work ethic and not equipped for what employers are needing. The factories are feeling this right now and it is not going to get any better. As long as actual education is lost to political correctness and people spend all their time on their I phones there is going to be a crisis in business. I know I am going to get a lot of comment about the Governor and the Legislature, but I am tired of millions being spent on lawsuits and no one spending time actually figuring out how to make the schools work, teachers paid, and not buying astro-turf for the football field. I don’t have all the answers but if you don’t put the actual education of the kids first the mess is going to get worse and not better. Even if the judges take over education I don’t see a lot of help for the graduates.

technology world. “I am excited to bring everyone to Manhattan for boot camp this year,” said Cassie Wandersee, the new managing director for CREE. “We will share a ton of valuable and actionable information that can be immediately implemented into marketing and communication plans that will help businesses across the state.” CREE focuses on helping small businesses succeed through new-media marketing research. As a generator and source of knowledge about new-media technologies, CREE enables rural businesses to flourish in an ever-changing environment. Its goal is to

Page 29 make research-based knowledge discoverable and accessible to individuals, businesses and communities and to foster positive changes to rural livelihoods. The boot camp aligns with the overarching goals and expectations of the center according to Lauri Baker, one of the founding members of CREE. “Myself and the other founders are seeing our vision playing out,” Baker said. “We are thrilled to have a new team in place and excited for the growth we have seen in just a few months.” Boot-camp “recruits” will leave with the skills and knowledge to take marketing to the next level, Wandersee said. “The boot camp

is a unique opportunity to experience hands-on training in storytelling, analytics and strategy.” Attendees will also gain insights into CREE leaders’ own adventures in new-media marketing and the team’s personal reflections on their journey. The Listening Tour and the Other Party the terrible log jams, the sordid games, the suffocating strictures of life and work in the Capitol, each blaming the Other Party. Or

John Marshall Senator Jerry Moran was recently out and about for another of his listening tours. The listening tour is an event scripted and perfected long ago by Pat Roberts, a kind of theater to convince the local audience that their man or woman in Washington is carefully tending their interests, a faithful servant who has nothing at all to do with the wretched state of affairs in the nation’s capital. Listening tours are designed to portray Washington not as it is – a congressman’s home away from home – but as some jagged foreign outpost. Such an event always includes a monologue, well-heated and half-baked, about the terrible log jams, the craven special interests, the sordid political games, the silly codes and strictures of life in Washington. This and more is mostly the work of the Other Party, of course, the obstructionists who foil any hope of compromise, of common sense and purpose. Our man or woman in Washington speaks with such authority that the locals dare not question his version of why things are so terribly wrong and getting worse. If only we would imagine 434 other members of the U.S. House or 99 other members of the Senate in other districts and other states, each of them on a listening tour, each explaining Like us on Facebook:

Other people. Imagine all those fingers pointing this way and that, the locals nodding in sympathy. Then what?

They all return to Washington, that’s what. They return to the craven special interests, the sordid politics, the ego boosts, the

perks and benefits and campaign donations that attracted them in the first place – and keep them there. Elections put legis-

lators in Washington. The listening tour helps to make it a round trip, again and again. JOHN MARSHALL

Youth Pheasant and Quail Seasons Perfect For Mentoring PRATT – If you know a young hunter who’s anxious to learn about bird hunting, there’s no better time to teach them than during the

Nov. 4-5, 2017 youth pheasant and quail season. During the weekend prior to the regular pheasant and quail opener, hunters age

16 and younger may hunt as long as they are under the supervision of an adult 18 or older. Daily bag limits during the youth pheasant and quail season are two rooster pheasants per day and four quail per day. Sixteen-year-old resident hunters and all nonresident youth need a hunting license. The youth season allows the adult mentor to focus on teaching and ensuring safe hunting practices are observed. This may not be the case when youth are included in a big opening-day group. Youth also get first crack at the birds, and

public wildlife areas and Walk-in Hunting Access areas are not likely to be crowded. Take advantage of these special seasons, and give a young hunter memories that will last a lifetime. Passing on our hunting heritage is critical to the future of wildlife conservation.

licenses of the defendants are now suspended in 47 states and the equipment used in the crimes along with the two illegal deer heads were forfeited. Kansas Game Warden Jason Harrold received a call from a community member on October 3, 2017 about

a headless deer carcass found near 60th Avenue and 40th Street in Pratt County. Game Warden Harrold commenced investigation with the assistance of the Pratt County Sheriff’s Office which led to the discovery of the perpetrators. Two big game trophy deer with inside spread

over 16” were illegally taken by the defendants. The case was referred to the Office of the Pratt County Attorney and complaints were filed in the Pratt County District Court. Tracey Beverlin, Pratt County Attorney, commends the professionalism of Kansas Game

Warden Jason Harrold. His work and attention to detail were instrumental in obtaining convictions in this matter. Game Warden Harrold “thanks the observant local members of the community who observed and reported this wasteful illegal killing of our wildlife.”

And I Quote By John Schlageck, Kansas Farm Bureau Quotations are like rare stones in rings of gold. They provide insight that can move, illustrate and entertain. They can do many things like remove the wheat from the chaff, provide a cowardly lion with courage or simply clear away all the cobwebs from a darkened corner. For a writer, quotations can add zip to a story or help provide credence to your tale. I collect quotations and some still reside in a couple manila envelopes. A few are taped on my kitchen refrigerator. Others lie scattered on the wooden floor of my middle desk drawer. I often refer to three

Page 33 or four books of quotations in my office book case, and every once in a while I still take out my scissors and cut from magazines, newspapers and any other form of paper when I find one I consider especially good. Sometimes, I even grab a pen and scrawl them down on a scrap of paper or if that’s not in sight, the palm of my left hand. I must write it down so I won’t forget. Most of these quotations are short on words but still say it quite well. After rummaging through my collection, I offer these up to for your reading pleasure. Some are written by famous people, some not so famous. If we take people as we find them, we may

make them worse, but if we treat them as though they are what they should be, we help them to become what they are capable of becoming. – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Of those to whom much is given, much is required. – John F. Kennedy If you don’t vote, someone else is voting for you on issues that are important in your life. – Voltaire Too much of a good thing is wonderful. – Mae West Life is what happens when you are making other plans. – John Lennon Earth is here so kind, that just tickle her with a hoe and she laughs with a harvest. – Jerrold What is defeat? Nothing but education, nothing but the first step to something better. – Wendell Phillips. One thorn of experience is worth a whole wilderness of warning. – Lowell To live in hearts we leave behind, is not to die. – Campbell Why should the devil have all the good tunes? – Rowland Hill Men are what their mothers made them. – Emerson An optimist is one who buys from Jews and sells to Scotsmen. – Anonymous

Nostalgia and Thoughts: Little Hands in a Purse

By Sandra Pugh When I worked at Northgate Salon we had lots of kids come into the salon with their mothers or fathers. Most of the kids were well behaved and we usually didn’t have any trouble with the little ones. I could usually

give the older ones the look with my big eyes and they would straighten up and behave. My niece (Megan) practically grew up in the salon her first 4 years. I think she thought of all the women that worked there as an extended family of aunts. My sister went to work at 6:00 in the morning and got off at 3:00. They would stop in almost every day when she picked my niece up at the baby sitters. One of Megan’s favorite things to do in the shop was; choose one of the children’s books,

then pick one of the ladies under a dryer. She was in toddler heaven with 10-12 Grandmas under hairdryers all at the same time. She would stand in front of the chosen woman until she noticed her. Then Megan would hand the woman the book and wait for the invitation to climb onto her lap. When the lady she had chosen invited her onto her lap Megan would scramble up as fast as she could to hear the story. It didn’t seem to matter that she had heard the same books over and over; it was always fun to have them read

to her again. There were always purses sitting around on the floor when the customers were getting their hair worked on by one of the 9 hairdressers. The hairdresser’s purses were always in the back room and usually sitting on the floor also. My niece knew not to touch the purses on the floor in the salon because they were the customers and none of them belonged to her mother. Liz would take Megan to the back room and point to her purse and tell her that she could get a piece of gum. Her purse was always

to the corner that Liz standing open for quick and I worked in. She was chattering all the access. The pack of way and was happy to gum was usually lying on the top of everything see everyone. I’m sure part of the excitement in the purse. Once she knew which was the thought of getting permission from purse belonged to her Liz to get a stick of gum favorite red head, Liz would tell her she could from her purse in the go back and get a piece back room. The woman that of gum. Megan would race to the back room to Liz was wrapping a help herself. She would perm on had placed her purse on the unwrap it by the trash floor between our two can outside the back room door and would be stations. The purse looked similar to the chewing happily when she arrived back at the one Liz carried and it was sitting open. Lying north end of the salon in the purse was a pack to talk to Liz and I. of gum, the same flavor Megan came boundthat Liz chewed. ing into the salon one Neither of us had day (before she was 2 years old) and ran over noticed the similarity of the two purses until Megan bounded over to the purse and saw the gum. I looked at Megan and said, “NO, that purse does not belong to Liz!” She looked at me and then at Liz and then back at me again while she was standing by the purse pondering the pack of gum. Then she bent over to put her hand in the ladies purse. Just before the fingers on her right hand touched the pack of gum I grabbed her left hand and pulled her back. My other hand came up and gave her a swat on her behind at the same time. She gave me a confused look and started to cry. I reminded her that she was told not to touch it because it was not Liz’s purse. She gave both Liz and I a look that only confirmed her confusion. She had been told by Liz she could get into a purse that looked like that one many times. She couldn’t understand why she got in trouble that time for trying to get a piece of gum. I looked at Liz and told her I should have spanked her instead because she had taught Megan to get gum from her purse. The little hands in a purse had not been a good idea from the start, but she learned the hard way that she should never get into a purse sitting on the floor in the salon, only the one in the back room that belonged to her favorite red head. (Continued from page 1) Stage 9 is located at 9 S. Main, Hutchinson, Kansas. Fiddler on the Roof, from the book by Joseph Stein, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and music by Jerry Bock, is the charming story of a family’s attempt to maintain their Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach upon their town of Anatevka. Fiddler is based on Tevye and his Daughters (or Tevye the Dairyman) and other tales by Sholem Aleichem. The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and their life in the Pale of Settlement of Imperial Russia. Fiddler on the Roof is and will always remain a beacon of life, love, and tolerance. The original Broadway production opened in 1964 and since then has been a testament to what “Tradition” really means. Stage 9 is pleased to partner with The Hutchinson Symphony and The Fox Theatre to bring this production to life for the Hutchinson community after its most recent revival on the Broadway stage in 2015. Auditions will take place on Friday, November 10, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 11, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church located at 2 Hyde Park Dr, Hutchinson, KS 67502.
