The Covered Dish: Gingerbread Trifle My favorite holiday has arrived and like a little kid I’m in high gear and excited as can be. Everyone went home after Thanksgiving and I wanted them to stay! There was so much more I wanted to cook for everyone. Sometimes I think I should run a restaurant so I could cook for more people. After much thought, no, that’s not a good idea. I just need a slightly bigger family! This week I am sharing a recipe I wrote in 2016 for a gingerbread trifle. It starts with my family recipe for gingerbread. Of course, if you don’t like raisins you can leave them out, but yours truly loves them in the cake. We turn this trifle into a fall/winter salute. But with a little bit of creativity you will find ways to change the flavors and ingredients. Trifles have been around for what seems

like forever. In years past it was a way to use up dried out cakes and pastries. They are easy to orchestrate when you’re traveling. Call the hostess, explain you’ll need a gorgeous bowl; and then bring the ingredients in Ziploc bags ready to create your masterpiece. Also in years past trifles were generously covered, actually saturated with alcohol! They would make the cake ‘early’ just so the alcohol had plenty of time to soak into the cake portion. Most of the time I think trifles are just dandy without any hint of alcohol. In the current recipe I have gone with the pumpkin influence, but keep in mind how nicely lemon goes with gingerbreads. If I can remember I’ll stick in my lemon sauce recipe that I also use when serving ‘just’ gingerbread. Sometimes during

the holidays the trifle presents a much lighter approach to the desserts of the season. It’s indeed sweet, but not heavy like a cheesecake or pie could be. A trifle would also work for folks watching their sugar intakes due to health issues. Fresh fruit and light whipped cream would be lovely with an angel food cake. Enjoy the scents and sounds of this wonderful season. Simply Yours, The Covered Dish. www.thecovereddish. com

Mini Marbled Cherry Cheesecakes 18 chocolate cookies with white filling 2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened 1/3 cup sugar

2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 can (21 ounces) Lucky Leaf Premium Cherry Fruit Filling, divided

Heat oven to 350° F. Line muffin tins with 18 paper liners. Place one chocolate cookie in bottom of each paper liner. In mixing bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar, eggs and vanilla until light and fluffy. Fold in half of fruit filling. Fill each muffin liner about three-fourths full with mixture. Bake 20-25 minutes, or until done. Cool. Top each cheesecake with spoonful of remaining fruit filling.

Cinnamon Apple Pie 1 refrigerated pie crust 1 tablespoon butter, melted 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 2 cans (21 ounces each) Lucky Leaf Premium Apple Fruit Filling 1 stick (8 tablespoons) butter, softened 1 cup flour

1 cup light brown sugar 1/2 cup powdered sugar, plus additional (optional) 1/4 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 2 teaspoons milk, plus additional (optional)

Heat oven to 400° F. On lightly floured surface, unroll pie crust. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle evenly with cinnamon. Roll up tightly and slice into 1/2inch rounds, like miniature cinnamon rolls. Press miniature cinnamon rolls evenly into bottom and sides of 9-inch pie plate, making sure there are no spaces between rolls. Pour fruit filling on top of crust. In large bowl, using pastry blender, combine stick of butter, flour and brown sugar, until crumbly. Sprinkle over apple filling. Bake pie until top and crust are golden brown and filling is bubbling, about 40-45 minutes (cover top and crust with foil, if necessary, to prevent from getting too dark). Remove from oven and allow to cool. In small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and milk to form icing. Add more sugar or milk, if necessary, to reach desired consistency. Drizzle icing over cooled pie.

Franching: Warm Fun

By Tammie Hoeme I just can’t get over how warm it’s been the last week. Such a nice bonus to the past Thanksgiving vacation. My older sister rolled into town on Tuesday and the party got started. My parents’ house might have gotten shaken off the foundation in the past several days. The kids have a good time running around the house. On Thanksgiving Day the weather was certainly better than what we asked. After doing some exploring the kids all got together and played a big game of soccer. The next day the cousins banded together and made a fort. After dragging out many tumble weeds they had a pretty big space. They took some other tree branches and made a wall. Then they convinced their uncle to load up some old junk to take back the fort. It was nice not having any basketball games to go to, however Addie did have one 6:30 in the morning practice. Allie is quite pleased that she is now the first chair in her trombone section. She did spend time practicing and it paid off. Weston told me that he did not want to go back to school. I think that the break got him out of his usual schedule. Luke and the kids spent part of Friday making a Christmas star decoration for the windmill at our house. It took two strands of lights that I bought. I had to go

back and buy another section of lights. The girls zip-tied the cord on and now the star is complete.

I Remember: A Cloud over Thanksgiving

By Doris Schroeder I Remember The calendar page on the wall said November, 1980. The crisp, colorful leaves had long carpeted the ground. The autumn tang had permeated the air for some time. As the days on the calendar were marked off, I was excited about the coming holiday of Thanksgiving. We planned to spend it at our rented cabin in Woodland Park, Colorado. We would go for a few days before the holiday and take our daughter Judy and our seven month old grandson, Ryan. Stan, our son in law would fly into Springs and we would all enjoy Thanksgiving dinner in the mountains. Our son, John and his family couldn’t come. It always took our breath away to view the range of mountains, especially Pikes Peak, from the large glassed in side of the A-frame cabin. We watched the clouds come over the mountains in a continuous panorama of color. The squirrels had come out for their morning repast of unsalted peanuts, squinted at us through the glass and scampered away. Ryan was getting around superbly well in his walker as always, checking everything out. Judy and I sat on the couch in the great room, planning our Thanksgiving menu. As we talked, my eyes idly watched Ryan in the kitchen area, scooting around and checking out everything he could find. I noticed him reach for the cord of the coffee maker…it took a moment for that fact to register in my mind. It was one of those moments that seem to go in slow motion and you are powerless to respond immediately. The coffee pot fell down, scalding one of his arms. Judy and I ran over and pulled off his shirt before he even realized that it hurt. He looked at us and gradually his face squinted up in tears. I think we put ice on it, called the care taker, and raced down the hill to the local medical center. By the end of the day, we had driven down to the

hospital’s burn unit at Colorado Springs, where they laboriously took off the burnt skin. John and I kept cringing and we wished we could take the pain for him. Our daughter, Judy, always stayed calm in emergencies, did what needed to be done as we drove him back and forth to the hospital each day. Stan flew in the day before Thanksgiving but when the day arrived, we put the turkey with all the trimmings on the table but none of us were very hungry. Along with our sense of well being, the dark clouds began to gather in the sky, threatening a certain change in the weather. Eventually it began to snow, just a few

flakes at first, but it kept increasing. With one accord, we knew it was time to go home. We quickly cleaned the cabin, packed out the van and started for home. Stan drove and the rest of us took turns holding Ryan. By the time we reached Dodge City, the snow was really coming down and we debated our position…should we try for home or spend the night in Dodge? Knowing Ryan needed daily medical attention, we decided to go for home. By now, it was almost a complete white out and we strained our eyes to keep on the road. Inwardly, we prayed that God would help us

through even though we could hardly see ten feet ahead. Humanly speaking, it seemed that we could never make it, but God had plans. He helped Stan (who never gives up) keep his eye on the road and brought us all home safely. We were all so thankful that Thanksgiving for the way God helps us in the emergencies of life. And Ryan? He is now a handsome young man, a college graduate and married to Melissa. also a graduate of K-State . They live in Topeka with their two sons and we will all be together on this Thanksgiving Day at Judy and Stan’s house in Hutchinson which makes

our story come completely around only thirty seven years later. As time has gone by, God has wonderfully watched over us through all kinds of weather and situations. No matter what situations our country finds itself, He will help us through if we have accepted Him into our lives and allowed Him to lead. Then when God calls us home, we will. like our daughter-in-law Carol’s father, Pete Siebert, who went to heaven a few days ago. enjoy our Thanksgiving Banquet with our wonderful Savior and Lord! Cattle Work First Priority For Top Hand At World Championship Ranch Rodeo “We just penned this group of cows to work. I’ll have to call you back tonight.” Work always comes first for a working cowboy. That’s his job, his profession, and when you’re in charge of 1,100 momma cows, nothing comes before the heavy workload. Nobody loves the life more and proven there’s none better at it than Connor Grokett who runs the JLB Ranch at Fall River. Besting more than 100 cowboys on 23 teams at the World Championship Working Ranch Cowboys Association Rodeo, Grokett received the Top Hand Award. He excelled in diverse competition working with cattle and horses like every day in his chosen profession, being a ranch cowboy. Riding at Amarillo for the Robbins Ranch and Keith Cattle Company team, Grokett was most humble about his success. “I just got lucky. There were a lot of really good hands there,” he evaluated. “Any of another 50 good cowboys could have been honored. I was blessed to be selected.” Yet, the Top Hand gives ample credit where due. “I really have a great team. It requires the best teamwork at these rodeos,” Grokett said. “We all work very well together.” Representing the Cottonwood Falls and Allen ranches, additional team members are Brian Keith, Justin Keith, Adrian Vogel,

Pax Vogel and Clay Wilson. Proof of team effort is Robbins-Keith successes in the two-go-round rodeo. “We were fortunate to win the average in the stray gathering, and we also won a round of the team penning,” Grokett said. Competing for the third time at the world finals, the Robbins-Keith team placed fifth overall. Yet, indisputably, a top cowboy must have a top horse. Connor Grokett certainly has that horse. “Ranger has a lot of cow. He always has a lot of try,” Grokett amply credited. An eight-year-old red roan Quarter Horse, son of Sweet Little Pepto, Ranger has a proven record, too, collecting Top Horse Awards at previous ranch rodeos. “I got Ranger as a threeyear-old. Fortunately, he just keeps getting better on the ranch and in the arena,” Grokett applauded. Ranch rodeo teams often find it difficult to decide which cowboy will ride the broncs. There’s no debate for Robbins-Keith. Earning several earlier ranch rodeo Top Hand titles, too, Connor Grokett is the bronc rider. “I didn’t place in either round of the ranch bronc riding,” he admitted. “But, my first horse bucked pretty well, and thankfully I was able to stay on to make the whistle and get a score. “I also qualified on my second bronc, but

he didn’t really buck like I’d hoped, to score higher for my team,” Grokett said. Growing up in the Flint Hills, Grokett said, “When I came to Cottonwood Falls at age five, Randy Peterson taught me all about the cowboy life. We went everywhere together working with cattle and horses. “Randy is a great mentor and friend,” Grokett recognized. Doing day work for Flint Hills ranches, Grokett graduated from Chase County High School in 2010. On the Pratt Community College Rodeo Team two years, Grokett was coached by world champion steer roper Rocky Patterson. “I competed in team roping, and did all right, won some

here and there,” he noted. After returning to the Flint Hills awhile, Grokett went to Osage County, Oklahoma, and worked as a cowboy for a few years. “That grass is like the native Bluestem around here, so we mostly ran yearlings,” he recalled. As the JLB Ranch manager, Grokett has one assistant for the 400 fall calving and 700 spring calving cows. “We background, send some to the feedlot, keep replacements, usually dry winter 500 yearlings, and send the smaller ones to grass,” he explained. Looking ahead to ranch rodeo competition, the Top Hand anticipates “hopefully some success, and lots

of fun. “What I like so much about ranch rodeos is that they’re family events. Good, clean fun competing with cowboys who have the same appreciation for horses, cattle and the cowboy way of life,” Grokett insisted. Lonesome Pine Ranch of Cedar Point won third overall at the finals. The team was the world champion in 2015, and reserve world champion in both 2013 and 2014. Paul Osgood of the Lonesome Pine team was named the runner-up Top Hand. Additional Lonesome Pine riders are Bud, Frank, Makenzie and Troy Higgs along with Travis Duncan. Broken H Ranch and Hebb Cattle Company of Bronson

and Fall River won the team penning event. Wilson Cattle and Haystack Cattle Company of Canyon, Texas, won the 2017 world championship. The team also won the wild cow milking event. Colten Mayo won the ranch bronc riding leading the Burns Ranch to be the reserve champion team. With first place in team branding, the Jolly Ranch and S&L Ranch placed fourth in team standings.

Why Didn’t I Think Of That? There have been a few inventions in the cattle business that made me say to myself, “Self, you big dummy, why didn’t you invent that?”I knew immediately that a gun you could shoot to vaccinate your cattle would be a winner. Now when you’re a little slow on the headgate and a crazy cow charges through, escaping the needle, instead of retrieving the witch on horseback all you do is load your gun or crossbow and shoot her, making sure it’s the vet gun and not the 30-30. Another appealing 123.51 Acres of Flint Hills Bluestem

invention is the Safety Riding Hard By Lee Pitts Zone Calf Catcher you attach to your ATV to catch a calf and then process it safely while the mother looks. I just don’t think it would work on any ranch I’ve ever leased because they were so rocky and steep you couldn’t climb them with an ATV. So I’m appealing to the inventor to make 12.2 Acres with Farm House

a mini-safety-corral you can attach to a horse. A most recent invention I find intriguing should be popular with every rancher. It’s called the VaxMate® and it’s a cold box that keeps your vaccines between 35.6 and 45 degrees Fahrenheit and it sounds an alarm if conditions change. There are three places to hold your syringes, keeping them cold and out of harm’s way. You can even get a Sharps® device attached like you see in your doctor’s office to get rid of spent needles safely. I hate to think about how much medicine has been rendered useless because it was baking in a stainless steel syringe in the hot sun. These all sound like great inventions and I’m not getting paid by anyone to say so. I’ve had some great ideas myself. My first invention was “boxed beef” and I’m not talking about ribeyes in cardboard boxes. You’ve probably heard the government is trying to clamp down on the hours truckers drive so that cattle going from California to Nebraska might be left sitting while the driver takes a manda-

tory snooze. My idea is to create a system of modular boxes that can be lifted on and off just like the modules that haul everything else these days. A trucker would pick up the module at a ranch and when he reached his time limit he’d pull into a truck stop or auction market where his cargo would be lifted on to another flatbed and off another driver would go. The only problem I foresee is that the tower cranes I priced capable of lifting 55,000 pounds cost about a million and a half. That might be cost prohibitive for some ranches and auction markets and most of the truck stops I’ve ever eaten at. We all know that someday the animal rightists will stop us from hot-iron branding. What I propose is using the same gun or crossbow you use to vaccinate, to deliver a paint ball filled with a weak acid whose impact will render a splatter pattern in the shape of your brand. (You’d better have good aim though or you’ll make life miserable for brand inspectors.) I haven’t worked out all the details yet. Watching runners use their I phones for

time he’ll unload his horse. When he’s done he’ll reverse the process. This will save wear and tear on the horse who will probably show its appreciation by bucking off its rider the first chance it gets in retaliation for hitting every rock and pothole on the outbound segment of the journey. Then the downed cowboy can retrieve his saddle that got bucked off and instead of carrying it home he can haul it in Lee’s Out of the Ordinary Individual Equine Mini-Van. Our motto? bio feedback I came up with the idea of using the same application on feedlot cattle and whenever an animal’s big red temperature light goes off over her head the pen rider will know to pull it. The only problem is it could get pricey putting I phones on 100,000 head. My last idea is a horse trailer, but not just any horse trailer. I envision one that can be pulled by an ATV so that a cowboy can drive to a far flung corner of a ranch pulling a Gooseneck with his pickup, then switch to a four wheeler pulling his mini horse trailer until the terrain gets impossible at which

Being on both sides of this equation, it becomes very complicated. For many years having served on foundation boards seeking assistance, there are obvious needs. From the opposite side, working with efforts to receive stipends from foundations which assist others, there are those obvious needs as well. Two key elements come into play in both situations. Accumulated funds must be distributed to the set effort at hand. It’s not easy knowing who or what has the most need and will put stipends to best use. Biggest concern

though is that all of the generously donated dollars go to the cause for which they were requested. Most people think if they give a dollar to any worthwhile effort, those needing it receive every penny. In certain foundations, trusts, and Good Samaritan groups, that’s the way it is. Unpaid volunteers manage funds and are conscientious in wisest distribution of hard-earned stipends donated to help others. However, dilemma arises when many fund raising organizations fill their own pockets with a big cut off the top. Sometimes, only a few cents of every dollar go to the cause for which funds were solicited. Most generous givers have no clue of this. They’re giving out of the good of their heart to help another. It gives

one a most worthwhile feeling to assist those less fortunate. Charities are often big time business paying leaders very high kickbacks. Generally, it’s on a commission basis, with rates often negotiable. Daily in the mail, on airwaves and telephone, some group is asking for financial assistance. Helping others in need is important, even essential as required of those with strong faith and beliefs. Donations should be given for what is nearest and dearest to one’s heart. Yet, it’s so important to know contributions go for that cause, and not somebody’s fancy clothes, home and car. Knowing the difference is very difficult. However, charities are required to publicly release management costs which should be evaluated before making donations. Reminded of Philippians 2:4: “Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.”

to make unannounced visits to the other community. “Participants become `secret shoppers’ for a day to discover what they can about their sister community,” the program guide stated. The visitors are trained to follow a process to observe and assess various elements of the community they visit. Before visiting, they check the online presence of the community. During their in-person visit, they assess community entrances, housing, education and social services, local economy, public services, recreation, friendliness, and more. Their comments and photos are compiled and presented to the community at a public meeting. Of course, their sister community is conducting a similar assessment on them. “I think that’s key,” Nancy Daniels said. “The participants not only give feedback to the other town, but they come back with lots of ideas for their own community.” After the visits, the results are presented at a town meeting, where Extension specialists then lead community residents through a process of identifying the town’s strengths and weaknesses. In

Rural Messenger approximately six months, a follow up meeting is held to track progress. These assessments are not statistical measurements. They are literally first impressions, which often become lasting impressions. Ultimately, the goal is to encourage community action. First Impressions reports can be a “wake-up call” to a community. “There was a business owner who hadn’t paid much attention to the outside appearance of his building (until he saw the pictures at a First Impressions meeting),” Nancy said. “No one was criticizing him, but he didn’t like how his entrance looked. He brought some painters in and it looked totally different by the time the community meeting occurred.” Communities in northwest Kansas are using the results to help shape a strategic doing process with support from the Hansen Foundation. Since 2015, 64 communities have participated in the program. These include larger towns as well as rural communities such as Arlington, population 452; Robinson, population 212; and Olsburg, population 189 people. Now, that’s rural.

How does a community participate in First Impressions? There is no charge, but the community must commit to provide volunteers to make an exchange visit and to host the public meeting. The application must also be signed by the town mayor so that public officials are aware of the process. The First Impressions program provides sample news releases and flyers to help the community promote public engagement in the town meeting. For more information, contact [email protected] or [email protected]. Mom was right. One never gets a second chance to make a first impression. Those impressions from outsiders can help a community identify areas where progress is needed. We commend the many volunteers

who are participating in this program across Kansas. They are making a difference with their evaluations and commitment to improvement. Such actions are important, because first impressions count. New Public Fish Salvage Ordered At Woodson State Fishing Lake decided to drain the lake entirely so the lake’s fishery could be renovated and angling access enhanced. A public fish salvage, removing daily creel and length limits but still requiring legal methods of take, was ordered May 1, 2017. However, repairs to the outlet valve and pipe were required before the lake could be completely drained. Repairs are now complete, and the water level is coming down several feet a day. As a result, a new salvage

order has been issued, allowing fish to be taken by snagging, seine, gig, and by hand. There is no limit to the number of poles an angler may use, and there are no length or creel limits. During the renovation, the current fish population will be removed. Before refilling, fish habitat will be added to the basin. Other enhancements may include extending boat ramps, as well as improving fishing piers and shoreline access. Once repairs and hab-

itat enhancements are complete, the lake will be refilled and restocked. This process may take up to a year. It will then take several years for the fishery to fully develop and provide good angling opportunities, but fortunately, Yates Center City lakes, Toronto Reservoir, and Wilson State Fishing Lake are all within a 30-minute drive. In the mean time, local anglers can bet that this historic fishery will come back better than ever.

PRATT – Last April, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) announced that Woodson State Fishing Lake, known locally as Lake Fegan, was scheduled for needed repairs and enhancements. Flooding had damaged the popular Woodson County lake’s spillway, and while assessing the damage, KDWPT engineers noted that the outlet valve and tubes needed attention. The 180-acre lake, which is located just 5 miles east of Toronto, was constructed in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and some of the infrastructure was showing its age. To repair the spillway and outlet valve, lake levels needed to be dropped significantly, and KDWPT Fisheries and Public Lands staff

Kanas Hay Market Report Ground alfalfa movement: Southwest/South Central Tonnage: 9,866/3,911 Last week: 10,558/4,147

Last year: 11,004/4,206

Hay market activity slow; demand moderate to good; offerings of grinder hay light; prices steady. Grinding alfalfa continues to be illusive and producers continue to receive increased inquiries. Per NASS, some producers were waiting for crops to dry down to finish with harvest, while fog and drizzle slowed progress in some areas. Rain would be welcomed to help the winter wheat crop, with light precipitation recorded in the north and southeast, with minimal amounts scattered throughout the rest of the state. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, the abnormally dry (D0) category increased slightly to 17.78 pct, while moderate drought (D1) increased to 1.07 pct. The Kansas Forage and Grassland Council is having their annual conference on December 12 in Salina. Visit their website at www.ksfgc.org, for more information and registration. November 29, 2017 (Continued from page 1) Mushroom soup, for example, contains hydrazines, which are potent animal carcinogens. A fresh vegetable tray is chalked full of nitrates. The main entrée, roast turkey with stuffing and cranberry sauce, contains heterocyclic amines and malonaldehyde, eugenol and furan deriva-

While both can be toxic in excess, present scientific knowledge indicates neither natural nor man-made food chemicals are hazardous in the quantities we

consume on a daily, monthly or yearly basis. Toxins, carcinogens and mutagens are everywhere in Mother Nature’s food supply. It is unwise to panic over minute levels of man-made chemicals such as the traces of pesticide residues occasionally detected. If there is a health problem we

should be concerned about during this upcoming holiday season, it may be overeating. If you don’t watch yourself, you can gobble down more than 2,000 calories easily at one sitting. It doesn’t take a food scientist from ACSH to tell you you’ll wind up stuffed like a turkey if you eat like that during the holiday season.

As most of us know, excessive eating has been called the “most striking” carcinogen ever discovered in rodent carcinogenicity studies. In other words, “fat rats get cancer.” Remember, when you sit down at the holiday table this season, leave that last leg of turkey or piece of pie for someone else. You don’t have to eat every last roll on the plate, and yes, Fido, the family dog, might enjoy those last three or four spoons of gravy. Eat moderate quantities of a wide variety of foods this holiday season and throughout the entire year. Despite the presence of Mother Nature’s toxins, they are not dangerous when consumed in moderation as part of a balanced, varied diet. Wheat Scoop: 2018 Conference for Kansas Women in Farming Set in Manhattan “Maximizing My Influence: Farm, Community, Consumers” is the focus of the award-winning Women Managing the Farm Conference, set for February 15-16, 2018, in Manhattan, Kansas. Since 2005, this event has been bringing together women who help provide the nation’s food supply. The Women Managing the Farm conference provides a supportive setting in which women can develop the skills, resources and knowledge needed for success in a competitive agricultural environment. Conference sessions and speakers are selected and designed to keep women up-to-date on the latest advancements in agriculture and thriving within their rural communities. During the twoday conference, attendees select from presentations covering many topics, including farm finances, relationships and health, agricultural and estate law, crop production and marketing, management and more. Attendees also

choose networking sessions tailored to the different roles women hold, such as agricultural partners and helpers, independent producers, absentee landowners, ag industry career women and business managers. Optional pre-conference workshops are offered on February 14, with activities including “A Farmer’s Guide to Quickbooks” and “Connecting to Consumers: Storytelling and Content Strategy for Social Media.” The 2018 conference will open Thursday morning with an energetic program by Marji Guyler-Alaniz, founder and president of FarmHER, an organization that showcases women in agriculture. Other general session presenters for 2018 include Naomi Blohm, agriculture economist and market advisor with Stewart-Peterson who will discuss Why Marketing Matters; Allyson Perry, community advocate with The Center for Food Integrity; and Mary B. Lucas, speaker, people connector, and author

of Lunchmeat & Life Lessons. Thursday evening’s activity will feature Chef Renee Kelly, host of Kansas City’s local TV show “Harvest with Renee Kelly.” The show focuses on telling the stories of the relationship between farmers and chefs. Registration for the conference is available at womenmanagingthefarm. com, with an early bird rate of $140 available through December 15. Kansas Forest Service – More than just trees MANHATTAN, Kan. — When you think of the Kansas Forest Service, it’s likely that trees and programs supporting trees come to mind. Many are unaware that the KFS encompasses a multitude of programs that serve Kansans in a variety of ways. The fire management program is one of these programs that has a real impact on the safety and protection of Kansans across the state, said Eric Ward, excess property manager with the KFS. The primary focus of the fire management program has long been to empower Kansas fire departments to serve their communities. There are around 16,000 firefighters in Kansas, and at least

13,000 of those are volunteers in the state’s 486 rural fire departments. The Kansas Forest Service fire program provides training, excess property distribution, prevention materials, grant funding, and consulting, all aimed at helping fire departments provide the best services possible. The past two years have made it obvious that the wildfire situation in Kansas is escalating, as it has been elsewhere, and the fire program is helping rural and volunteer fire departments keep their communities safe by providing equipment and trucks, free of charge, to combat loss due to fire. One of the ways the Kansas Forest Service

is increasing fire departments’ capacity is through the Federal Excess Property Program. It serves as a conduit for fire departments to be loaned excess federal property, generally military vehicles and fire equipment that have been outfitted to serve their needs. The property remains under federal ownership, and when no longer needed, the equipment is returned to the forest service for reassignment or disposal. Additionally, the program provides salvaged parts to help fire departments reduce maintenance costs and provides access to new replacement parts at a reduced cost. Nearly all Kansas fire departments

are struggling to meet operational needs, Ward said, and the Federal Excess Property Program can mean the difference between having quality equipment, and having no equipment at all. It’s important to note about 90 percent of Kansas is protected by volunteer fire departments. There are currently 793 pieces of large equipment and trucks across Kansas, worth $26.5 million. The Kansas Forest Service also received a fire engine recently through the Federal Excess Property Program from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which is an agency partner in wildland fire management. Engine 44 will be used in prescribed burning, training, spring

wildfire support, and will likely be deployable in the summer fire season to help combat fires around the country. Ward said the Kansas Forest Service is proud to make a difference for Kansas fire departments, continually striving to be a reliable source for replacement equipment for fire departments around the state, especially in the current economic climate. The fire management tab on the Kansas Forest Service’s website has more information on what the fire program does. For more information on the excess property programs that help keep volunteer fire departments running across the state, visit: Kansasforests.org/ fire_management/excessproperty.html

Nostalgia and Thoughts: School Supplies

By Sandra Pugh Watching the school buses on Monroe Street one day started me thinking about how different the school supplies are today the kids use. When I was in grade school and high school (50’s and 60’s) no one used a back pack.

Those were for people out hiking in the mountains. 1st grade; all we needed was the big pencil a Big Chief Tablet, the tablet to learn to print the alphabet and of course the largest box of crayons we could get our parents to buy and blunt nosed scissors. The writing tablet had alternating solid and dotted lines. The dotted lines showed us where the lower case letters were to end and the capitals were between the solid lines. Writing cursive started second grade I think. 2nd grade: we still didn’t use hard back

books. We had little work books. They were just paper and a little bigger than a piece of typing paper folded in half. We learned cursive writing and reading in those little paper work books. If we got a 100 score on anything the teachers would put a stamp on the page. These were very special and we worked hard to get the stamp. Some of the teachers had seasonal stamps; pumpkins for Halloween, Christmas trees or Santa for Christmas, hearts for Valentines Day, and of course bunnies or decorated eggs for Easter. We

proudly showed these stamps off to everyone. In the second grade we had spelling tablets, which were long and narrow like the note pads or grocery list pads we use today. They were perforated so they could be handed in to be graded. Some of the teachers after we had the spelling test would have us hand it the person behind or in front of us and we would check them as she spelled the word to us. Then they were handed to her so she could enter the score in her book. 3rd grade; we added, to the other supplies, a black box of 8 primary

water color paints and the paint brush. We also had a bottle of white glue for crafts and we were allowed to have large pink erasers. This year we graduated to hard bound school books. Our teachers started to teach by lecturing and working on the blackboard. Our easy time was over in class and the serious learning had begun. 4th grade; our mom’s bought the books from the drug store. We graduated to note book paper and thought we were really big to get to use that. We also needed rulers. In the 4th grade everyone had what they

called a flutophone. It was plastic and looked like a miniature clarinet. It made an awful squawking sound and I wonder how the teacher could stand that. Why did we need to learn to play them?? I would like know the answer to that question. 5th -8th grade; we carried the leather notebooks that zipped up to take home books for the work we hadn’t finished. Supplies didn’t change much the last 4 years in grade school. All we needed were pencils and notebook paper. In high school we needed a new pair of white sneakers for Gym class each year. We were not allowed to walk on the Gym floor in street shoes. The finishes on the hard wood floors were not as strong as they are now. There was a line painted around the edge of the floor that you didn’t cross in street shoes. Today a lot of what we used is still used 1-5 but they have to have glue sticks, and markers and ruled index cards we never used. They each have to take tissues and antibacterial hand sanitizer. Since they don’t learn cursive writing (which I think is a mistake) they probably go right to using computers about now. 6-8 grades today have to have a stapler, weekly planners and combination locks, 3 ring notebook and tabbed dividers and a one subject spiral notebook. I wish kids today were taught, in high school or their jobs during high school, how to count back change from the amount of the bill up to the amount of money you hand them. They rely on the computer to tell them how much to give back and they just hand it to you (no counting). Smiths Market in Hutchinson is the only place I know of that makes them learn how to count it back right. It can catch mistakes easier than the other way. School supplies and what they learn has sure changed over the years and computers and calculators don’t always make it a better education. Some things are better if you learn them by using your brain to work it out. To contact Sandy: therapyk9@cox. net

Laugh Tracks in the Dust

Milo Yield This Thanksgiving holiday is shaping up to be one for the record books — which also will probably re-shape my already not-soshapely shape. Here’s why: I’ve already eaten one fantastic thanksgiving meal

in Oklahoma City. We’re hosting another thanksgiving meal here at Damphewmore Acres on Thanksgiving Day — with six family members attending. Then, I’ll eat another bountiful thanksgiving meal on Sunday in Neodesha, Kan., with a bevy of old friends. I’ll be lucky if I don’t gain at least five pounds from all that sumptious eating. Our granddaughter and hubby hosted the early turkey day meal in Oklahoma City. Eight of our immediate family arrived for the

feast and camraderie. We got in plenty of both. We also watched the football game between my two college alma maters — Bea Wilder U I and Bea Wilder U II. Our family wuz conflicted about the game. In addition to my graduating from both schools, ol’ Nevah has a degree from BWUII. Our two daughters both graduated from BWUI. Our granddaughter and hubby are working on degrees from BWUII. Our grandson and his fiancee are nearing completion of their degrees from BWUI. So, what did I do? I wore both colors from both schools — purple cap and orange jacket, which turned a few heads in Oklahoma City. How did the game turn out? BWUI won the game, but more important, our family unity remained intact. My friend Willie Jay from Mt. Vernon, Mo., emailed me that he and his family are planning a traditional Low Fat Thanksgiving Dinner.

He sez everyone eats so much it turns to fat, which eventually settles low into bellies and thighs. With the Christmas holiday season just around the corner, I got a wonderful piece of parenting advice to pass along. If your kids of grandkids are misbehaving and getting a little too rambunctious during the time leading up to Christmas Day, here’s what to do to get them back in line. Wrap a bunch of empty Christmas presents and put the pile under the tree. Have packages labeled with each kid’s name. Then, when the kid misbehaves the first time, give him/her fair warning not to do it again. If there is a second offense, simply go to the tree, find a present with the kid’s name on it, and throw it into the fireplace or stove and burn it up. I understand that this action results in 100% compliance with good behavior — at least

November 29, 2017 restaurant. As the frazzled wife got out of the car, and hurried inside to retrieve her glasses, her old geezer of a husband yelled to her, “While you’re in there, you might as well get my hat and the credit card.” I’ve a helpful friend from Iowa who overwinters in Arizona. He tells me that he wuz shopping in Scottsdale the other day, when he spied a bumper sticker on a parked car that read “I miss Chicago.” So, my friend broke the front window, shot out all four tires, added an Illinois political bumper sticker and left a note that read: “Hope this helps.” Overheard at the coffee shop: “A thief broke into our farmhouse last night. He started searching for money, so I woke up and searched with him.” “I asked my doctor to lower my sex drive because it’s all in my head these days.” “Someone asked me why after 60 years of marriage I still call my

until after Christmas morning. While on a holiday road trip, an elderly farm couple stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. After finishing their meal, they left the restaurant, and resumed their trip. When leaving, the elderly woman unknowingly left her glasses on the table, and she didn’t miss them and inform her hubby until they had been driving for about forty minutes. By then, to add to the aggravation, they had to travel quite a distance before they could find a place to turnaround on the interstate, in order to return to the restaurant to retrieve her glasses. All the way back, the elderly husband became the classic grumpy old man. He fussed and complained, and scolded his wife relentlessly during the entire return drive. The more he chided her, the more agitated he became. He just wouldn’t let up for a single minute. To her relief, they finally arrived at the

ANGELS Among Us retirement

Darlene and Dean Shank retire after 21 years in the gift store business. They started Angels Among Us in the Hutchinson Mall, featuring unique, handcrafted gifts. Throughout their journey, they have met many unforgettable people and have traveled to hundreds of arts and craft fairs across the Midwest. They plan to stay on the road for their shows once they close the store. Darlene and Dean say they could not have survived in this business without the support of family and friends and faith in God. They wish to take more time for their family and watch their three grand kids in their sports and music. The couple will miss the memorable relationships they have made through the years. Their last day in the Hutchinson Mall will be December 31. Enter now for the chance to win various prizes that will be announced December 21. Come in to check out markdowns and visit with Darlene before their last day.”

ROGER'S VIEW FROM THE HILLS: COVETNESS “ENVY IS THE ART OF COUNTING THE OTHER FELLOWS BLESSINGS, INSTEAD OF YOUR OWN.” Harold Coffin The constant war of envy that so many take part in is what the commandment DO NOT COVET THY NEIGHBORS GOODS. There is also the one about the neighbor’s wife. Seems that it is the innocuous part of the 10 Commandments that people break without any regret or even awareness on their part. Every time anything is attempted in a way that is intended to make government simpler and more fair, envy raises its ugly head. It is an automatic reaction that people hate anyone who is successful. Even when details are not known the first reaction is that “THE RICH WILL BENEFIT.” Actually I am tickled when the rich do well. I have found no poor people that have created jobs. I find it interesting that those who hate rich people let rich people run the parties that they are members of. It is the rich ones on the other side that are the nasty ones. It also is a wonder to me how people are always wanting free things and yet where does that money come from? Those that have it fund the programs for those who don’t. Yet people still hate those who actually make money. Those who are always talking about jobs do not take into account the number of jobs that those who buy luxury items create. Yet no one actually realizes that they are coveting what others have. Civilizations that have been torn apart by the philosophy of hating the rich found themselves in countries that murdered its citizens and everyone was reduced to the same misery as their neighbor. Only the few who were more brutal made it to the top and lived like kings, (or dictators). And yet today education tells students that these failed experiments, that always led the world to suffering and failing miserably, are something to admire. Of course it is absolutely imperative that belief in God had to be eliminated. Replacing the State in God’s place gave license to those who were free from any restraints that would allow their atrocities.

Roger's View From The Hills Today every time some horrendous event happens it is always asked ‘what would drive someone to do these things’? It is very simple. When God is removed he is replaced by something and that is always evil. There is no factor that

cannot be explained as to why so much evil is in the world. When good is gone the world fills the vacuum and that is evil. When people don’t hear what they want in the pulpit they just go to where they hear what they want. Many go where they are entertained and not challenged. The Bible admonishes that a person has the responsibility to warn others when they are wrong. Not to brow beat or nag. Once the error is pointed out it is the responsibility of a person to be there as a friend but not a judge. This is something that I have difficulty with. I have a friend whom I admire who has turned her

November 29, 2017

back on God. I have no idea how to approach the subject. In today’s world if I say something I am condemned as intolerant. Yet it is not the fear of public condemnation it is the fear of driving her further away from God’s love and forgiveness. It is a dilemma that I wrestle with. For all the complications of this life things would work much smoother if the simple 10 Commandments were just followed. The attitude that I want to do things my way instead of the right way has gotten this world in trouble ever since the beginning. For those who hate rich people it would be good to stop and think what you would do with

their money. Oops, that is what they already do now. It is the change in attitude that other people’s money belongs to the government is what is fueling this fight. For those who want to battle and save the old tax system maybe the thought of slowing spending would be a better thing to fight for.

On giving thanks

John Marshall The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, “God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are.” – Luke 18:11 Out of a measured inclination and without speaking for anyone else, I suspect most of us out here on the plains are grateful. Each year we summon this message as the calendar draws down and pause to take stock of what is meaningful in our lives, the good and the bad, in hopes that the good is winning. At Thanksgiving especially we repeat these hopes, even in the wake of more disaster, natural and manmade, as we said last year and the year before, and here we are again, praying for victims of murderous rampage, of war and famine, of great storms, of poverty and greed, of intolerance and neglect. Once more we endure the brutality of man, the primal combat and corruption that corrode our moral fiber. Avarice and mania have laid waste to the Washington agenda and to our fundamental government. And then Las Vegas, and Sutherland Springs, Tex., succeeding Orlando and Ferguson, and Charleston and Paris and Dallas, and other hellish landscapes, reminding us that murder and fear continue on a massive scale. Yes, we are still here but I wonder if many of us know why. To what purpose do we go on? How many know, or care? That we are thankful at all is a wonder. And yet there are little clues, nuggets of faith. We can no longer give thanks that we don’t really know what terrorists are, or what war is like, or that fear and ignorance are for other people in other places. But we can still hope that our nation emerges from tragedy and grief with greater awareness of the dark that threatens our society. * WE GIVE thanks in tentative economic times that our community remains financially stable, if not exactly strong, and determined to improve. That sirens in our town are

still a major event because they may involve someone we know, and because they are so rare. That we can go to work safely, on foot, or on bicycles if we like, and that when we do drive, we aren’t channeled bumper-to-bumper onto 80 mph freeways, or forced to fight the fumes and long lines of stalled commuters. When we get there, parking is free. That we have so many goodies − by way of television and computers and libraries − of the cities, but few of the baddies, by way of porn or hustlers or muggers, or criminal gangs. That we can care about what happens to the elders next door, and practice private charities, especially this season and generally year ‘round. That we are reasonably well-housed, and that we are well-fed and well-clothed, without going deeper into debt than we have been. That we no longer worry so much about getting bigger and richer, having seen what an obsession with bigness and richness has done to other people and communities. That we know our service station manager and our grocer, our school teachers, and our newspaper editor, and our city councilmen and councilwomen, and our police chief, and we don’t hesitate to talk it over with them when things seem out of hand, and that we extend a hand or pat a shoulder when things seem to be going well, and thanks to them. That we want churches to be strong, that we still believe the Commandments and the Constitution. That we have wonderful schools and a college, their promise for the next generation, and that we remain committed and determined to help them in every way. That we live in a community enriched with deep Swedish history and a strong heritage, a place strengthened through its unconditional embrace of varied peoples and cultures. That our community is brimming with people who believe no day is dismal, and a dull sky is as plausible as any other, and who embrace each morning with the brightness and suddenness of a hyacinth, as though spring were here, even in February. That the footings of our community, of settlers with abiding faith and a love of man, remain strong and inspire us yet. * WHILE WE are grateful, we must resist the temptation to give thanks that we are not as others. That we do not pull into a little Midwest cocoon, trying to preserve

Classifieds what is best and trying to ignore the continuing horrors of poverty and racial hatred and religious bigotry. That we confront political and business corruption, rather than ignore it, because it really is our concern. * IN THIS community we may give thanks for what we have and for what we may be or would like to be, and then let’s add another prayer: Of thanks that we know life is not going so well for many of the world’s billions; that we realize how we are diminished when bombs and guns go off in Paris or Orlando and about Damascus or Baghdad, or places otherwise of innocence and decency; that we fear for all refugees of war and despotism; that we can still help when storms rage with murderous fury over our neighbors, or when a great city goes to the wall, or when children starve in the sub-Sahara, or villages are drowned in Asia; and a prayer of thanks that we know we are not truly alone out here on a Kansas island. WE GIVE thanks that we can still care, and not only for those around us. And that we strive not to be as the Pharisees. Gratitude becomes us. Gratitude rooted in smugness does not. We can truly be grateful if we realize| that. *** Paper, scissors and what rocks? Our stapler went on the fritz the other day, which got us to thinking about technology. Lately a lot of normally rational people have become so smitten with technology that these gadgets have been elevated to gods of idolatry. As the holidays approach, we pause. The Internet and its cyber cohorts and escorts ‒ cell phones, iThings, ‘droids, have become at once the rule and the exception. What is commonly seen as a “phone” – as in cell phone – has been transformed; it is now a pocket computer. We don’t really mean “phone” when we call it that. For most, the voice in a phone call has disappeared. These things send text messages, tweets, take photographs, offer games and maps and apps; they present the Internet, devouring attentions and stealing hours with Facebook and other digital tar pits. These devices are seductive, menacingly addictive. We are not against machines, as are some people who believe technology is leading us back into the jungle. The Internet is handy most of the time, and adventurous. We rather like machines, starting with the stapler and, better yet, scissors, which are the highest points the machine has yet achieved. The danger now is when the convenience a machine affords to some people becomes more important than the inconvenience it causes to all. A tool - the Internet, a computer - should never wear the pants or make the decisions. We pursue our day through a jungle thicket of imponderables, starting with the weather, Royals baseball, Topeka and Washington; our machines are equipped only for ponderables, such as paper, scissors and whatever else rocks. - JOHN MARSHALL

Just chill and enjoy the day relaxed in the sun and read her book. I on the other hand paced the “poop-deck” and grumbled. You see, to me it was all about catching fish; after all, we were fishing! But to her it was all about enjoying the tranquility of being on the lake, even if no fish were caught. I rag Exploring Kansas Outdoors on other fishermen and By Steve Gilliland hunters when they get [email protected] too intense about their chosen sport, but when If you’ve followed my it comes down to it, I’m column over the years, you know that Joyce and often just as bad; Joyce calls it my “conquer I are NOT renowned mode.” And nowhere for our fishing prowess. does my conquer mode When we had our boat, Joyce always had a book kick into overdrive more than during trapping along, and when the season. fishing was slow (as it I have penned this usually was for us) she

column weekly for more than 12 years now and I’m often asked “Is it hard to come up with subjects every week?” My answer is always “Yes it sometimes is.” I’ve been trapping coyotes for over a week now, and was counting on finding a dynamic adventure or two from the trapline for this week’s column, all the while in “conquer” mode as I sulked about not catching as many coyotes as I should be. I had driven through the ditch, then into a grassy waterway that wound its way across a wheat stubble field, then went overland to three traps I had completely back in

the middle of a section. I was rolling slowly along the edge of a new wheat field and came to where it skirted a wooded area and a dry creek. I was talking out loud to God as I often do, grumbling about my lack of trapping success and asking Him for column fodder for this week (as I often do also,) when across in front of me flew a rooster pheasant, then another and another until 5 roosters and a couple hens had taken wing. I looked ahead of me toward where they came from, and there with its luminous, multi-colored head sticking out of the tall green grass and shining brightly in the morning sun stood another rooster waiting to see what I would

do. Then it hit me; this was my book when the fish weren’t biting! I didn’t need dynamic to write about at all, I just needed to slow down and somehow convey to you things I see when I’m out in Nature. For instance, at a certain spot, along a dirt road I travel every morning checking traps, I see a doe whitetail deer and her fawn from this year. One of them is usually in the ditch and the other somewhere near in the field. I slow down and they watch me carefully until I’m too close for their comfort, then across the field they trot like a couple of show horses, their whitetails bobbing from side-toside, telling me they’re

not really spooked, but I’ve gotten close enough. Am I the only one who marvels that wild 4 legged critters like that share our space? This time each year the Kansas fields and pastures become temporary digs for a myriad of hawks and falcons as they come south seeking the mild fall weather we usually have. I especially enjoy watching the Northern harriers, large slender birds with falcon shaped wings and a broad white stripe across the top of their tail. They hunt by gliding just a few feet above the ground over pastures and CRP patches, rocking from side-to-side as their telescope eyes search for the slightest movement in the grass below. I caught a skunk this week, and even though I know firsthand their stinky reputation, I couldn’t help but marvel at how beautiful a skunk really is. Their little head and pointed nose are dwarfed by the long thick coat of coal-black fur they carry around, complete with white double racing stripe down their back. The fur on their tail is so fine it ripples in the breeze. This year we had a skunk hat at the trapper’s booth at the state fair, and it was a great attraction. Kids loved getting their pictures with it on their head. Yes, if you can get past the smell, skunks are marvelous little creatures. And then there are the sunrises; Kansas has the most amazing sunrises. They begin as a warm yellow glow in the eastern sky. As it crawls slowly up over the horizon, the warm yellow slowly turns to brilliant orange and then that flaming ball we call our sun peaks above the earth and climbs into the sky to light and to heat our day. Yes, just as Joyce learned to enjoy the day on the water, even if all she caught was forty winks and a sunburn, so I need to learn to slow down and smell the skunks, so to speak. So next time you’re out in God’s creation, whether hunting, fishing, trapping or hiking try to shift out of your “conquer mode” and really see what’s around you as you continue to Explore Kansas Outdoors! Steve can be contacted by email at [email protected].

The “Fun” Starts Outside the Lines

All three of my girls were blessed with artistic talents. Between my mother and their great grandparents, they were born with a much higher ability than I ever have been able to tap into. It’s just the way that I have always described myself – void of the ability to take a pen to paper and do much less than draw stick figures doing who knows what. Even my 2 year old grandson looks slightly disappointed every time he asks me to draw a ball. The circle is easy, but when he wants me to make it a basketball, baseball or golf ball I lose him. I love crocheting and cross stitching, but never have attempted much more than my many infamous self portraits between the ages

Intermittent Irony By Lisa Meitner of 5-7 with crazy braids coming out all sides of my head and bloody noses. My mother tossed them in the memory box with a note on the back of one, by her, explaining that she really didn’t think I had ever had this malady. My oldest, Aubrae, transformed an extra bedroom in her and her hus-

band’s first home in to the most beautiful nursery for my oldest granddaughter, Olivia. Realistic zoo animals in a beautiful, natural jungle like setting. You would have thought that they hired an artist to complete the mural. My middle child, Jordan always had the patience to complete intricate drawings and clay figures that have earned her many ribbons at our County Fair. I hesitated when trying to describe the artistic abilities of my youngest, Schuyler, so in the name of fairness, I called her cell and asked what she would say. She didn’t even hesitate. In her most serious voice she stated that she made a baby and he’s “perfect in every way” - and then

November 29, 2017 finished with, “that’s all I got” ! I like to think that the genetic hand down from me to them is a rye, and most times twisted sense of humor. But I digress. My plan has been to put myself out there and try things that scare as well as interest me. This explains running 5 and 10 K’s, half marathons, one marathon and repelling off the Ambassador Hotel in Wichita. Somewhat easier on this old body of mine, my friend Lisa offers group art classes in her studio. You know the kind. An instructor standing at the front, sharing how the whole class can follow her lead and create our own version of the painting of the week. You are even allowed to BYOB, which definitely moves my fin-

ished products up the ladder by leaps and bounds. Lisa is so supportive and the crowd is always such a neat variety of faces that we all usually recognize from our little town. This morning I woke up to a “dare” for the next class from my friend Kim. An upcoming class this Wednesday So, as I reflected on Lisa and her classes, I realize that we all stick ourselves in that “box of inability.” It’s easier than putting ourselves out there, chancing the untraveled path. We all need to quit being our own hardest critic and try anything new that interests us. I hope to see you in Cheney KS, at Voss Creative- an incredible shop that offers awesome art lessons. Come on....you can do it!
