From the Pastor Today’s first reading describes God’s Wisdom preparing a great feast. When all is prepared the entire city is invited. It is interesting that the invitation does not go to those who are highly educated, or those who are influential and in control. “Whoever is simple, turn in here . . .” God’s wisdom is offered to those who are willing to see things as he does, and entrust all to his loving care. A Protestant minister once shared this story: “The year I was ordained as an Elder in the church, an older minister took me for a cup of coffee. I had known him all my life. He sat across from me and talked about how to prepare for a funeral, how to guide a board meeting, and how ministry would be both a blessing and a curse over one’s lifetime. As the time approached for us to return to the floor of the conference to hear my name called out and to be voted upon for full membership, his demeanor changed. He took my hand and looked me clearly in the eye and said, ‘Do not do what I have done.’ ‘What have you done?’ I asked. ‘I have spent my last thirty years in my next appointment and have missed the opportunities of my life.’” It’s a temptation we all face – to look ahead and miss the opportunity we are being given in the present moment. Dealing with a crying baby, or having a struggle of the wills with a child, we can be distracted by the moment and forget the wondrous gift they are, the love we have for them, the privilege we have been given to care for them and guide them. Soon they will grow up, and all the present moments to be patient,

to laugh, to forget our self, will be gone. When we are suffering or worried about the troubles of our life, we try to look into the murky future and determine how long this will last or if there is ever a hope for things to be better. Yet, we believe that our struggles have a special meaning because they offer us the opportunity to imitate Jesus even in our small efforts to embrace the Cross. It is easy to complain or be anxious, and soon we have missed an invitation to renew our trust and confidence in God’s loving care for us. Especially in those moments in which we plan to do something better for God – more prayer, more study, a new commitment to volunteer – we have great ideas for the future and what we will accomplish. But, as our plans are postponed because of our schedule or our present obligations, we begin to miss the opportunities right in front of us. As we sit in a traffic jam, we have a quiet moment to spend in prayer. Our phone will connect us with the readings of that day’s Mass even if we cannot attend. We don’t have to wait until later to be in touch with God – he is with us in every situation. Being wise comes from study and long life and experience. But, God does not set special requirements to become wise as he is wise. “Whoever is simple, turn in here . . .” God will show us what we need to know, provided we choose to see our world and our situation as God sees it – from the perspective of trust and confidence in his loving care. –Fr. Stephen W Bierschenk

–Fr. Stephen W Bierschenk
