Buck, Dr. Schreck, President Tami Khuntia, Sparks Complete Auto Care, Terry Shaver, Law Office of O. Terry Shaver, LLC, and Village Trustee Ed Schussler.

Our heartfelt thanks goes to Sue Withers, Standard Bank & Trust, Andrea Justin, Old Plank Trail Community Bank, Michelle Sabbia, Alden Estates of Orland Park, Janice Laging, Illinois National Guard Family Assistance Center, Denise Smith, PA&T Insurance & Financial Services, Renee Oswald, Guaranteed Rate, and Keloryn Putnam, Orland Park Area Chamber of Commerce.

From the Top... President’s Message Dear Fellow Chamber Members, I hope all of you are enjoying the awesome summer weather. I am having the time of my life as the President of the most versatile Chamber! It is exciting to attend all the New Member Orientations, Ribbon Cuttings, and Business Before and After hours. I am so happy to see the notable attendance numbers of our members at these events! I am so pleased that our chamber participates in joint events with the neighboring chambers. I think these events are definitely a superb idea. When we interact with other Chambers, we gain ideas and enhance our relationship with them. All of our events for the year have been quite successful, thus far. I have met many of our newer members at our Member Orientation (May 8), our OWN Luncheon (April 17) was once again a hit and there were new and familiar faces at our Leadercast event (May 4). Thank you to all of the committee members that were a part of planning both the OWN Luncheon and the Leadercast. Your efforts were most appreciated! By the time you read this, one of our most exciting events of the summer, our annual Golf Outing will have taken place at Silver Lake Country Club. The dedicated golf committee members

worked diligently to make it another wonderful event. With our dynamic Amy Coghill joining us, anything is possible on the golf course! One thing is certain; everyone will have summer FUN at this event! In the month of July, we have added another exciting event to our schedule. The Fine Arts Fair will return as we work in partnership with the Village AND Orland Park Crossing to bring back this summer favorite. We are encouraged that this newest event, under the leadership of Heather Warthen from The Orland Park Prairie, is off to a great start. If you happen to know any talented artists from the community, please have them call our Chamber office to reserve a booth at a very nominal cost. The Fine Art Fair will be held on July 21st & 22nd from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm at Orland Park Crossing, located at 143rd Street and LaGrange Road. Mark your calendars and join us for a fun day in the sun as many family friendly activities are being planned! When I am asked how one can benefit from Chamber Membership, I always answer “The more you get involved the more you benefit.” Try to join any committee that you might enjoy. If you are unsure about which committee is suitable for you, I urge you to contact our energetic chamber Executive Director, Keloryn, for guidance. I would also be happy to hear any suggestions

or comments that you may wish to share.

/0!## Currently, we are looking for engaging speakers for our Monthly Membership breakfast meetings at Silver Lake Country Club. Our Speaker committee is looking for speakers that will help us make these monthly meetings more informative by discussing current issues and concerns. Please encourage any speakers that you feel could help us, to contact our Chamber office at (708) 349-2972. Our committee is looking to fill spots when our Monthly Meetings resume in September. There will be no Monthly Meetings during July and August as we take a small hiatus during summer vacation months. Our next monthly meeting will be Wednesday September 26 at 7:45 a.m. at Silver Lake Country Club. I will leave you with this closing thought; there is a difference between interest and commitment. When you are interested in doing something you do it only when it is convenient. When you are committed, you accept no excuses; only the result. As members of this most prominent chamber please try to stay committed! If you do, you will see the results.

Mayor’s News and Notes Happy Birthday, Orland Park! It was on May 31, 1892 that the Village of Orland Park was incorporated. We are grateful to the Orland Park Chamber, its members and the business community for being such a significant part of the progress Orland Park has enjoyed. On May 21, the Village Board members and I marked this milestone with junior high student essay contest winners serving as village officials and with Orland Park Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Our community’s future is in great hands. Saluting Korean War Veterans It was great to see so many of you on May 27 when the Village of Orland Park hosted the Department of Defense Korean War 60th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony. Despite the 97 degree temperatures, more than 500 Korean War Veterans from throughout the south region attended. We are very proud of the village’s Veterans Commission and all that they did to make this event so very memorable for a great group of vets as our nation begins its year long salute to those who served in this war.

A number of community organizations helped the Veterans Commission, including the American Legion Orland Memorial Post 111, Reber-Tesmond Orland-Palos VFW Memorial Post 2604, the Orland Park Lions Club and the Orland Park Law Enforcement Organization. Thank you to Orland Park Boy Scout Troop 383 for volunteering for the Korean Vets’ Ceremony and returning the next day to do it all again on Memorial Day. It was a Memorial Day Weekend of which all of Orland Park can be very proud. New Businesses It’s been my pleasure to meet the many new businesses in town when they host their grand opening celebrations. It was recently announced that Cheesecake Factory is opening an Orland Park location at Orland Square. The Village Board and I know how fortunate Orland Park is with its stable business climate and we will continue to promote the business friendly environment for which Orland Park is known. The village’s overall commercial vacancy rate remains at less than five percent, well below the state and national averages.

Taste of Orland Park 2012 We look forward to seeing all of you at this year’s Taste of Orland Park 2012, August 3-5 at the Village Center. This has become a community wide favorite and we thank the business community for generously helping to sponsor this event and so many others throughout the year. Resource Corner Gluten Intolerance Defined Submitted by Marty Linderborg, Great Harvest Bread Company

To determine if you need to be concerned about gluten, you need to understand the three main areas related to gluten sensitivity.

There’s a buzzword going around town: gluten! It’s oft repeated, but very misunderstood. Here in laymen’s terms is its function and what it may do to your body. Gluten exists in the cellular structure of many grains and is composed mostly of protein. Quantities of gluten are particularly high in wheat, measurable in rye and barley and virtually nonexistent in rice and corn. You might think of gluten as a building block of the grain: it contains nutrition in the form of protein, creates a chewy quality in the food and helps bread to rise. Gluten can be extracted from grain and is a popular food in Asia. It is used to shape and mold imitation beef, turkey, chicken and other meats and is often used as a substitute for meat among vegetarians. People with sensitivities should read labels carefully as wheat gluten can be found in salad dressings, soy sauce and other packaged and processed foods with sauce mixes. Wheat gluten can also be found in foods that contain malt, brewer’s yeast, edible starch, bran and other products.

Celiac disease. Celiac disease is an auto-immune disorder in which the body produces antibodies when gluten is ingested. The resulting gastro-intestinal symptoms are generally immediate and severe. The disruption to the digestive tract is so severe that the body becomes unable to absorb nutrients. There is some indication that Celiac disease is on the rise. Some experts attribute the rise to our “clean’ lifestyle which they believe has affected our body’s ability to maintain a healthy immune system.

It’s All About the Arts The Orland Chamber is looking to make summer a bit more colorful for its residents. The Chamber, in partnership with the Village of Orland Park and Orland Park Crossing, will be hosting a non-juried art fair on Saturday, July 21 and Sunday July 22 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm at Orland Park Crossing which is located at 142nd Street and LaGrange Road. This is the first time that the Chamber has organized the Fine Art Fair which was offered in the past by the Village.

Gluten sensitivity is a broad term that accounts for a second set of symptoms that can occur when gluten is ingested. Symptoms include joint pain, inflammation, skin rashes, fatigue, headache and nausea. There is no test for gluten sensitivity and the most of the diagnosis comes in observing the effects of going gluten-free. Some who exhibit these same symptoms may instead, have an allergy to the wheat grain itself.

There are still some prime sponsorship opportunities available. Sponsors do not have to be a member of the Chamber and are a great way for local business to support the arts in the local community. Sponsorships are available on three levels: Gold ($500), Silver ($250) and Bronze ($100). Gold and Silver sponsors will have their logos and business names included on all signage and on the T-shirt that will be created. Bronze sponsors will have their business name

If you are experiencing severe or chronic symptoms you should see your health practitioner and rule out a true wheat allergy. The September issue of the Chambergram will discuss whether a Gluten-free lifestyle is something you should consider.

appear on all of the event signage. Sponsors do not have to be members of the chamber to participate but sponsorship spots are limited. There are still openings for artists to reserve a booth, as well. Artists do not have to be a chamber member to reserve a booth. The fee to reserve an artist booth is $100 for chamber members and $125 for non-Chamber members. Electricity to a booth will be supplied for an additional $25 fee. Registration forms for both sponsorship and artist booth reservations are available on the home page of the chamber website at www. orlandparkchamber.com or by calling the chamber office at (708) 349-2972. We hope you plan to take some time to attend this event. Family activities and entertainment will be held along with the Fine Art Fair and refreshments will be available from local restaurants. We look forward to seeing you there!
