And Finally...

2015 Golf Outing More than 150 local business people enjoyed day of golf and networking during our 2015 Golf Outing held Thursday, June 18 at the Silver Lake Country Club in Orland Park. Many thanks to event co-chairs Ray Klosowski and Karen Nemeth, hole sponsors, prize donors and countless volunteers for making this event our biggest and best to date. A portion of the game’s proceeds, organized as a Best Ball Shotgun Start, will benefit the Chamber’s Scholarship Program.

President’s Message

Whenever I head out of town, I tend to do two things – pick up a newspaper from that town and see what their chamber of commerce is up to. For those of you not aware, I work for a media company so the first one makes complete sense. For the second one, I like to see what other chambers offer not only for their members but also for their communities. When I visit our Malibu, California, office I usually stop in to the Malibu Chamber of Commerce to see what they have going on and if they have any new ideas. Before I took a trip to Junction City, Kansas, for a speaking engagement in April, I checked out the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce website to find out what was going on in the area. Over the Fourth of July weekend I traveled to Nashville and checked out their Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce website

before heading there to get some ideas of must-see’s. I’d like to think there are people just like me doing the same thing with our chamber when they visit the area. I’m happy to say our chamber has plenty to offer for things to do in the area. Hopefully whether you are a volunteer or an attendee, you’ll have a chance to come out July 17-19 to the OPACC Fine Art Fair. We’ve added a Fine Art Fair Preview Night with a handful of featured artists, some refreshments and live entertainment from 6-9 p.m. Friday, July 17, at a unique space at Orland Park Crossing. The fair will then take place from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. July 18-19 with art to purchase, food and beverages and music. Support fellow chamber members and sign up to work the OPACC table at the Taste of Orland Park Friday, July 31-Sunday, Aug. 2. And don’t forget to purchase your tickets to the Orland Park

Mayor’s News and Notes

US Conference of Mayors – National Honor The Village of Orland Park was honored to be one of 10 communities nationwide awarded the United States Conference of Mayors City Livability Award. Orland Park was honored for its community wide anti-bullying initiative. This collaborative effort, endorsed by a number of local government entities and agencies, delivers a strong message to the young people of the community from a number of avenues. The message to bullies is that bullying stops here.

The anti-bullying stance shared by the Village of Orland Park, The Bridge Teen Center and all of our local government entities began in the fall of 2014. A coalition was formed between the village and The Bridge Teen Center that enabled the creation of communication avenues that extend to young people and families affected by bullying. We chose to focus on bullying for two reasons. The first was to deliver a message to those being bullied that our town is aware of the problem and we are willing to meet it head on, and secondly that victims of

bullies are not alone.

University of Chicago The University of Chicago Medicine’s 120,000 square foot medical facility in the Main Street area of Downtown Orland Park is moving along. The development, which will include a pharmacy and a 580-space parking structure, will employ more than 100 people and create more than 200 construction jobs. We are anticipating ground breaking ceremony this fall. Vietnam Moving Wall Coming to Orland Park The Vietnam Moving Wall will return to Orland Park October 1-4 again being on display at the Village Center. The wall’s return is part of the Village of Orland Park having been named a community partner for the United States Department of Defense Commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. The village’s Veterans Commission will need volunteers ‘round the clock to help host the wall and area businesses can get involved by helping to sponsor this very special event in Orland Park. For more information call, 708/4036115 or email the commission at [email protected].

OPIE

Community Night with the Joliet Slammers for Wednesday, Aug. 19. For tickets, contact the chamber office. Also, a huge thank you to all of those who participated in the golf outing. The chamber is grateful for your support. A huge round of applause for our hard-working committee and volunteers for executing another successful outing. You may have heard that OPACC is launching a Shop OPACC Week this year. I’m excited to announce that it is in fact true save the date for Oct. 25-31! For more information, turn to Page 7 in the Chambergram to find out how you can become part of Shop OPACC Week and help keep dollars in the Orland Park area! Remember to shop local, Heather 22nd Century Media Full Village Summer Calendar Visit the village’s website at orlandpark.org and follow our social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube & Pinterest) to stay up to date on all that’s coming up this summer. We have a number of our annual favorites returning --- the Farmers’ Market every Friday morning (except July 31), City Lights Orchestra at Centennial Park West (June 28), our July 4th festivities and the Taste of Orland Park (July 31-August 2). Pandemonium in the Park returns August 8, having been a great hit during its debut last year. Costumed competitors will climb, slide, crawl and run or walk through a 5K of wet, muddy, slippery, maybe foamy challenging obstacles. Details are available with the Recreation Department. And, as always, thank you so very much to the many area businesses that co-sponsor the village’s events, making them possible for the Orland Park community. Daniel J. McLaughlin, Mayor Village of Orland Park

Improved Lighting Needs For Aging Eyes

Typically after the age of 40, normal changes begin to occur in the human eye including decreased capacity to focus up close and a smaller pupil size letting in less light to the retina. Consequently, one of the best ways to reduce falls and injuries for the elderly as a result of deteriorating vision is through

the task area instead of in front of the task. All electrical cords should be secured and out of the senior’s pathway. • Downlight Fixtures – Downlights provide overhead lighting from the ceiling through surface-mount, recessed, pendant or chandelier lights. Home downlights are often used over the stove, sink and countertops, and should be placed to the side and slightly in front of the position where the senior would stand to complete a task.

• Adjustable Task Lights – Task lights provide higher levels of light near or above an area that needs more direct light. Wall plug-in task lights include desk lamps, table lamps, floor lamps and swing-arm lamps. To avoid reflective glare, a task light should be placed beside

• Architectural Fixtures – This type of lighting provides general illumination and ambient light to living and transitional spaces, including hallways and darker rooms. Adding automatic motion sensors that turn on lights, particularly at night and from bedroom to bathroom, ensure greater safety for seniors. In addition, the eye lenses of older adults tend to yellow, diminishing the ability to see cool white light. Using more cool white halogen and fluorescent bulbs help older adults see well and stay safe as their eyesight changes through the years.
