Buy Local Expo September 16 Largest Networking Event of the Year There’s nothing like a cupcake to get the party started and Alex Stier is just the guy to nudge it in that direction. Expect to see tray upon tray of his dandy little morsels up for grabs at the Chamber’s Buy Local Expo on Sept. 16 at the Diamond Mills Hotel & Conference Center in Saugerties. “It’s an easy way to just have a little fun,” said Stier, the owner of Home Plate Deli in Kingston and Olive’s Country Store and Café in Shokan. While he wouldn’t divulge the flavor he’ll be featuring at Ulster County’s premier networking event, Stier promised it would hit the spot and break the ice for the thousands expected to attend. “To me, that’s the joy of the Expo,” Stier said. “It’s the one day out of the year where you can solidify connections in a great place.” “Most of us work so hard that we just can’t leave (our businesses) and we have a list of things to get done. I have a great time seeing everyone.” No doubt making connections will be one of the highlights of the 19th annual Expo, scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. Of course, it’s in those face-to-face encounters that future business deals are struck, a major goal of the Chamber. “I think the success of the Expo is due to the fact that we attract such a diverse cross-section of local businesses and organizations,” said Chamber President

Ward Todd. “They really see that as a unique opportunity to meet hundreds of other local business leaders, all under one roof.” The Expo, which is free and open to the public, draws nearly 100 exhibitors each year and it’s recommended that you reserve your booth early. “We sell out exhibitor space every year,” Todd said. “As of press time, there are still a few choice booths remaining. “Members who participate are virtually assured of making at least one important contact or sales lead. In fact, most exhibitors tell us they make multiple important connections or sales leads at this event.” That’s an important thing these days. The human component, even in business, often is lost to social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr. Stier uses social networking tools to do business, but he said nothing replaces that one-on-one encounter in settings like the Expo. “It forms relationships because people do business with people they know,” he said. “It means more when you can meet and greet the person; it changes it from the Facebook friend to the real friend.” For other business owners like Lynn Formica of simply business inc., the Expo is an ideal occasion to get her name out. “We’re a small, developing business, and we’re trying to not only get to know

Presenting Sponsor: Naccarato Insurance other local businesses but have them get to know us and what our services are,” said Formica, a certified public accountant. Her firm provides bookkeeping, tax services and other administrative details like billing and accounts receivable. This will be Formica’s fourth year at the Buy Local Expo, and she said there’s nothing like it in the region. “It’s getting (people) to know what your business does and meeting (up with others in) the general business environment,” she said. Even much larger, established businesses

reap benefits from the Expo, according to Denise VanBuren, vice president of public relations at Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corp. “We are strong believers that a rising tide lifts all boats,” she said. “When our entire business community networks together, when members support each other, when we shop and support locally, we are all better off for it.” “Any business that depends on customers will find a great value proposition in the annual Ulster Chamber Expo.” Continued on page 3

Fun For The Whole Family Zena Rec A Woodstock Institution It’s a private club, but it’s not closed to the community. It’s exclusive, but it’s not out of reach for those who want to swim or play tennis for a few hours. It’s evolved, but it’s not so different that kids still can’t spend the day doing cartwheels or playing baseball. First impressions can be deceiving, so when you meet up with Chamber members like those representing Zena Recreation Park, you might learn a thing or two. Granted, Zena Rec, as it is known, has always been the sort of place where families can while away the summer, enjoying the well-groomed 25 acres of wooded trails and recreational facilities. Several generations already have and they’ve bonded with other families over the years. Many of the children who grow up there become lifeguards and volunteer their time with the younger kids. Those core attributes remain intact, but there are little-known facts about the park that originally started as an IBM rec center. For one, it’s got a lot to offer to the community, according to Holly Williams, a board member who leads the marketing committee. “We offer swimming lessons for anyone,” she said, referencing the big five-lane pool. “We have a couple of instructors, who are certified in special-needs swimming, so we

Chief among them is its competitive swimming team known as the Zena Sundevils. One need not be a member of the recreational park to join the team, Williams said. “What’s really great about it is it’s a place, where if you can swim across the pool … you can be on the team,” she said. “You don’t have to be a super-star swimmer. It’s fun and everybody can participate. There’s lots of camaraderie.” The team is one of eight in the local DUSO league (Dutchess Ulster Swim Organization,

Frogmore Has Uptown Jumping “Up On The Roof” More Than A Song As the lyrics go, “Right smack dab in the middle of town, you’ll find a paradise that’s trouble-proof. And if this world starts getting you down, there’s room enough for two…up on the roof.” Actually, it’s more like room for up to 70, but other than that, the familiar lyrics to the 1962 Drifters’ pop classic could easily be the Frogmore Tavern’s new anthem. Last month, owner George Lewandowski and his crew opened The Roof at Frogmore, the newest addition to the popular pub-like restaurant at the site of the former Parent Teacher Store at 63 North Front St. Not only is it a breath of fresh air, but The Roof at Frogmore offers a unique experience with an unmatched view of Uptown Kingston for patrons who want to eat and drink under the sun or stars. “It’s about 1,400-square-feet and it has a bar for about 20 patrons,” Lewandowski said. “It has nine tables and a little cocktail seating area and its own seasonal bathroom, or ‘outhouse,’ as we like to call it.” The rooftop dining facility additionally features a special menu and six craft beers on tap. Best of all, the upstairs space overlooks the mountains and tree lines, Lewandowski noted. “The way the railing and fencing is placed, you have maximum views with minimal interference from cars,” he said. Lewandowski plans to keep the facility open through the fall and will reopen it in the spring. “Once the leaves turn, it’s going to be gorgeous,” he said. Like the downstairs Frogmore Tavern, the rooftop bears the handprint of its meticulously involved owner. Lewandowski, a former manager at Rosco Mirrors in Jamaica, N.Y., spent a good chunk of time redesigning and building both floors. “It involved a lot of blood, sweat and tears and planning, but, mostly, planning,” he said. “I’ve been here on the job every day since we started (work on the roof) in late April. Family Fun at Zena Rec Continued from page 4 www.duso.org). The six-week season culminates with a championship meet. Williams’ daughter is on the team and she credits those involved with “uncovering her talent.”   Practice is held every weekday morning once local schools close for the summer. There typically are two sessions—older swimmers (ages 13 and up) with practice from 7:30 to 9 a.m. followed by the younger groups (12 and under) from 9 to 10 a.m. Aside from the bigger pool and another secure toddler pool, Zena is particularly proud of its four newly resurfaced tennis courts, which are often called the “best in Ulster County,” according to Williams. Zena is really on the ball with lights for night play and instructors like Dara Wilder, a United States Professional Tennis Registry-certified instructor. She has taught all ages and levels for more than 20 years and is available for private lessons. Again, one does not need to be a Zena member to take lessons. For those who already know how to play, they can visit five times a season for a charge of $10 per visit. Zena Rec certainly is not limited to swimming and tennis. It boasts basketball and volleyball courts, horseshoe pit, baseball diamond, soccer field, playground, nature trail, snack bar and pavilion. Williams and her family, former weekenders, are going on their fourth season as park members and she said it’s changed their lives.

“We used to come up in the summer when my daughter was young and we wanted to find something to do,” she said. “There really was nowhere to go for little ones. There aren’t a lot of places in Ulster County that are safe for your kids to be kids. What’s so great about Zena is there is a great toddler area.” Williams’ daughter is now 11 and her family has formed close friendships and enjoyed becoming part of the park community, she said. “It’s a wholesome and safe place. It’s relaxing and really a great place to hang out in the summer,” Williams said. The best part is that Zena has close to 30 membership openings this season and Williams is anxious to get the word out. That’s one of the reasons she and other Zena members regularly attend Chamber Mixers. “A lot of people don’t realize what we’re all about,” she said. “That’s why we’re in the Chamber. Zena really is a community. “We’ve got three or four families that are on their second and third generation, so I’m a newbie, but it’s made such a difference in our lives. That’s why I’ve gotten more involved,” Williams said. Zena Recreation Park, located at 714 Zena-Highwoods Road in Woodstock, can be reached at (845) 679-8098 or www. zenarec.com.
