White Memorial Presbyterian Church | August 2018

A Happy Ending For much of the past week I was at home recovering from hernia surgery. During this time I was being careful to follow my surgeon’s orders to take it easy (not making any important decisions and not doing anything physically strenuous), so I watched a lot of television. I enjoyed baseball games and I watched several movies on the Hallmark Channel. Each year in the fall the Hallmark Channel shows new Christmas movies leading up to Christmas. This July they followed their tradition of showing movies from previous years around the clock for a couple of weeks. They are feel-good movies that always have happy endings. Oh, sure, at some point in the movie the plot takes a twist where the characters have a falling-out, or have some difficulty in their relationship, or life seems to be bleak, but in the last few minutes all becomes “right with the world” – at least in their little corner of it. There is something appealing about these movies, particularly in this time when there are so many controversies and troubling issues in the world. Wouldn’t it be nice if we knew that everything was going to turn out so well! And then I remember what it is that we are about as the people of God. In the fall, particularly in the season of Advent, we prepare for the birth of our Savior, Jesus. We tell the stories of the people who waited in darkness and then have seen a great light. We read of the trials the people of God faced as they prepared for God’s coming. Then we finally re-tell the story of how Joseph and Mary, trying to be faithful to the command to be registered, found they had no place to stay in Bethlehem. But the good news is the story ends with the birth of Jesus. It is good news, indeed! Now here we are in July and the story, just as life, continues. Oh, it is nice to take a break from the heat and watch snowy, happy-ending Christmas movies, but we are not called to be the people of God to feel good for a brief, distracted moment. The Christian message is much more significant than that. As the people of God we have good news to share – and to live. And that is exactly what we are doing year-round. When we go to Haiti, or support Step-Up and the many mission partners we have in Raleigh, Wake County and around the world, or help a refugee family as we are doing now, or share the good news through Vacation Bible School, a Midsummer Celebration, and experiences such as the Montreat Music and Worship Conference, Montreat High School Youth Conference, and the Massanetta Middle School Conference, or care for one another with meals, a caring call, letter, or simple smile, we are sharing the good news of Jesus to a world that needs to experience the joy that God has to offer for all of us. No, it is not an easy message that we can tie up in a neat bow or that we only share during special weeks of the year, but it is a message that brings the deep love, grace, peace and joy of God to all, for we know that God is working for the redemption of all of creation. May we all know that love,

The Community Allocations application process begins in September of each year and awards are announced in February. PRAYING DURING TIMES OF NEED

What does it mean to “pray without ceasing,” as Paul encourages the Thessalonian church? In prayer we present our true selves before God, and we also pay attention for God’s voice and presence in our lives. We pray through words and silence, activism and service, music and art. Prayer is not one-sided, but rather an openness to two-way communication with God. Many of you have asked what you can do about the current immigration and family separation crisis in our country. One faithful response is to pray, and we can pray without ceasing.
