Making Them Count - Overnight Camp 2018 The theme for our summer was Make ‘Em Count, based on Psalm 90:12 which says, “Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Each night as the students walked to the main assembly for worship, they encountered a different something along the way. On Monday night students heard various ticking clocks as they walked to the service where we discussed the theme and pretended that camp was cancelled and it was time to go home. Let me say that seeing their reactions was epic! We tied that into how camp is an emotional high and we sometimes miss the wonder of it all: a God who is so desperate to speak truth into our lives that He will do whatever it takes to get our attention. On Tuesday night, there were some helpers who stood and shouted “Do whatever you want, it’s your life to live” while others shouted “Listen to God and make ‘em count.” We taught about Samson that night and how when we listen to the voice of the enemy over the voice of God we not only lose our strength but even our ability to see. On Wednesday night as the campers walked to chapel they found large clocks along the path with questions like; What if I did trust God? What if my parents didn’t get a divorce? What if I never dated that guy? We talked about how when we waste our lives digging up dead things we not only live foolish lives and waste the days we’ve been given, but that we also never find the living among the dead. On this particular evening, 27 students responded to the altar call for salvation and became followers of Jesus. On Thursday, there were mock jail cells along the path that were labeled with things that bind us; lust, addiction, drugs and alcohol, shame, self-hatred, etc. We talked about how we have complete freedom in and through the cross of Jesus Christ but when we choose to stay bound, we don’t number our days. In so doing, we don’t gain a heart of wisdom.

By Tara Davis

There was a large white sheet hanging behind me as I spoke with the silhouette of a cross cut out. As each person walked over to the chapel, their hands were bound with some rope. Watching students surrender in worship with bound hands raised is something I will never forget. At the end, we invited anyone in the room who wanted to be set free to step forward and find their freedom in and through the cross of Jesus. We laid the prison doors on the floor and I’ll never forget watching in amazement as those in the room began to respond to the call of Jesus. Adults behind the sheet were there to not only cut the rope, but to look each one in the eye and speak words of life and freedom and truth over each one. Some wrestled in their chairs uncomfortably, and we pleaded with God to move. There were tears, heartfelt cries of worship to Jesus, and adults who stood along the walls on the side and silently wept at the wonder of a Jesus who not pursues in the most loving of ways but also sets captives free. We closed in worship and invited them to worship as they feel led, and as soon as the No Longer A Slave song began to play, campers rushed to the middle to literally rip the prison doors to shreds. Demolishing those prison doors and what they represented was a pure act of worship, and was one of the most powerful, beautiful and inspiring moments I have ever been graced to be a part of. Our plan was to keep the prison doors as future props, but God’s purpose? It always prevails and He wanted no scrap of bondage left behind and none of us, myself included, will ever be the same again.
