From the Pastor SPREAD THE WORD My Dear Parishioners, Our Lord said to St. Peter: “I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matt. 16:19.) St. Peter is often depicted with a set of keys. But “St. Peter’s keys” are not just used at the gates of heaven. They are used within our Church for the good of all. St. Peter’s keys refer to the Sacrament of Penance. For sins committed after Baptism, Catholics have recourse to this great sacrament of healing. (See Catechism of the Catholic Church 1420-1498). The problem is that we don’t recognize sin anymore. It makes one wonder why Christ had to suffer and die on the cross! But sin is a reality. And all of us are sinners. To help us to look at the reality of sin in our lives, the Gospel gives us a good question to ponder: What would you say if Christ asked you “Who do you say that I am?” Hopefully we will see that Christ is the Messiah, the Savior of the world who suffered and died for our sins, and Who calls us to repentance and forgiveness. Then after we confess our sins to a priest, we will better be able to fulfill our intention to avoid sin, make reparation for sin, and to do good. The grace we receive in this Sacrament will lead to a rediscovery of reconciliation with God and His Church, strength to fight against sin, and a peace that only comes from God. And there are even more spiritual benefits. I ask you to consider again the wonderful Sacrament of Reconciliation within which you will find the mercy and forgiveness of Our Lord simply because He loves you. In Christ, Fr. SAINT MONICA, WIDOW—332-387 St. Monica’s feast day is August 27th. She is the patron saint of mothers and wives. One of our parishioners gave me a note about St. Monica. She writes that St. Monica is an example of “perseverance in prayer” as St. Monica never stopped praying, especially for her son who became St. Augustine. In fact, it took sixteen years of praying and of tears before St. Augustine was baptized. But St. Monica also received more than what she asked for in prayer. St. Augustine became a bishop and ultimately a saint! St. Monica’s perseverance in trusting in God through her prayers allowed her to accept God’s answer in time and according to His will. God is not to be outdone in His generosity! Let us ask the intercession of our patroness, St. Monica, for all the members of our St. Monica parish.

2017 ST. MONICA FAITH IN ACTION Our theme for the 2017 Faith in Action campaign is Spread the Word. We invite parishioners to look for opportunities in their everyday lives to share their faith with the world. Greeters Needed! The SMS Preschool and Family Center is looking for some smiling faces to volunteer at our Greeter table. Volunteer responsibilities include greeting people entering the Family Center, checking for Safe Environment badges and providing them with directions to their respective destinations within the building. Family Vocation Chalice Update Three seminarians were ordained to the priesthood for Dallas in 2017. Five seminarians are expected to be ordained in 2018. This August, 20 young men have entered the seminary for their first year of studies to be priests for the Diocese of Dallas, including one from St. Monica Catholic Church. At the present time, 80 men are in formation to become priests for the Diocese of Dallas. An all-time record! When you pray for an increase in vocations with your family in your home, three things happen: 1. Entire families once again pray together; 2. More priestly and religious vocations become a reality; 3. Parishioners in the pews light up when they see a family accept the chalice at Mass. They start praying, also. Actualización del Cáliz Familiar de las Vocaciones Tres seminaristas fueron ordenados sacerdotes para Dallas en el 2017. Se espera que cinco seminaristas se ordenen en el 2018. Este agosto, 20 jóvenes de la Diócesis de Dallas, entraron al seminario como su primer año de estudios para el sacerdocio, incluyendo uno de Santa Mónica. En este momento, 80 seminaristas están en formación para ser sacerdotes de la Diócesis de Dallas. Un record nunca alcanzado. Cuando ora para el aumento de vocaciones con su familia, en su hogar, pasan tres cosas: 1. La Familia entera vuelve a orar junta; 2. Mas vocaciones sacerdotales y religiosas se hacen realidad; 3. Los feligreses en las bancas se motivan al ver que una familia acepta el cáliz en la Misa. De El Pastor Mis Queridos Feligreses, Nuestro Señor dijo a San Pedro: “Yo te daré las llaves del Reino de los Cielos. Todo lo que ates en la tierra, quedara atado en el cielo, y todo lo que desates en la tierra quedara desatado en el cielo.” (Mt. 16,19) A menudo a San Pedro se le identifica por las llaves. Pero, “las llaves de San Pedro” no solamente son usadas para las puertas del cielo. Son usadas en la Iglesia para el bien de todos. Las llaves de San Pedro se refieren también al Sacramento de la Reconciliación. Por los pecados cometidos después del Bautismo, los Católicos han recurrido a este sacramento de sanación. (Mirar Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica 1420-1498) El problema es que ya no reconocemos el pecado. ¡Nos ponemos a pensar porque Cristo sufrió y murió en la Cruz! Pero el pecado es una realidad y todos somos pecadores. Para ayudarnos a ver la realidad del pecado en nuestra vida, el Evangelio nos da una pregunta buena para meditar: Qué dirías si Cristo te preguntara, “¿Tu, quien dices que soy yo?” Esperamos que veamos a Cristo como el Mesías, el Salvador del mundo quien sufrió y murió por nuestros pecados, y Quien nos llama al arrepentimiento y el perdón. Después de confesar nuestros pecados a un sacerdote, debemos de cumplir con nuestras intenciones para evitar el pecado, reparar nuestro pecado y hacer el bien. La gracia que recibimos de este Sacramento nos llevara a redescubrir la reconciliación con Dios y Su Iglesia, nos fortalecerá para pelear contra el pecado, y obtener una paz que solo viene de Dios. Inclusive hay más beneficios espirituales. Les pido por favor que nuevamente considere el Sacramento de la Reconciliación en el cual encontrara la misericordia y el perdón de Nuestro Señor simplemente porque Él les ama. La Viuda de Santa Mónica – 332-387 La fiesta de Santa Mónica es el 27 de Agosto. Ella es la patrona de las madres y esposas. Uno de los feligreses me dio una nota sobre Santa Mónica. Escribió que Santa Mónica es un ejemplo de “perseverancia en la oración” porque nunca paro de rezar, especialmente por su hijo quien llego a ser San Agustín. De hecho, le tomo diecisiete anos de rezar y derramar lágrimas antes que San Agustín se bautizara. Santa Mónica recibió más de lo que ella pedía en sus oraciones. ¡San Agustín llego a ser Obispo y después un santo! La perseverancia de Santa Mónica en confiar en Dios a través de sus oraciones, le permitió aceptar las respuestas de Dios en su tiempo y de acuerdo a Su voluntad. Pidamos la intercesión de nuestra patrona, Santa Mónica por todos los miembros de nuestra comunidad de Santa Mónica.
