There is a failure to realize that only the exclusive and indissoluble union between a man and a woman has a plenary role to play in society as a stable commitment that bears fruit in new life. We need to acknowledge the great variety of family situations that can offer a certain stability, but de facto or same-sex unions, for example, may not simply be equated with marriage. No union that is temporary or closed to the transmission of life can ensure the future of society (The Joy of Love, 52).

Pastor’s Column • August 28 Our first reading is taken from the Book of Sirach. It is a book of instruction and wisdom which is filled with maxims that must guide the daily living out of a well-ordered and fruitful life. It is a journal of the spiritual road in which Ben Sirach has gathered the fruits of his experience and meditation on scripture. The author considers humility to be the foundation of wisdom. The humble person is better loved than a rich benefactor, who may be valued for his work, but finds little affection, especially if that person is not “meek and humble of heart.” The humble take their proper place with respect to God. They find their true grandeur, and thus greater openness to new gifts and grace whereas the proud are too full of themselves. We read our fourth and final passage from the Letter to the Hebrews for this year. The author of this letter underscores the importance of the new spiritual relationship established by Christ for His disciples. God manifested Himself to the Israelites through fire, cloud, thunder, etc. With Jesus, “the mediator of the new covenant,” the whole situation and resultant relationship with God is radically transformed. One comes to Him without having to face terrifying manifestations. Fear has given way to joy that can only lead to an unrestrained yet humble generosity. In today’s passage from Luke’s Gospel, Jesus enters the Pharisee’s home to have dinner. Jesus observes the guests choosing the best seats and uses this opportunity to tell a parable about a wedding feast. The purpose of the parable is to teach humility. Jesus says, “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, 1568 The Blind Leading the Blind (detail) but the one who humbles Source: liturgy.slu.edu himself will be exalted.” Jesus then turns to the host who had invited Him and gives an instruction on welcoming others. Jesus, who reveals the Father, makes Himself, without reservation, without waiting for anything in return, the friend of the weak, the poor, the disinherited, the sick who need a doctor, even if they are filled with earthly goods; He does so to the point of giving His life. He calls us to see His face in the faces of our sisters and brothers and respond to them as if He were standing in front of us. God bless you, Father Ron Blessed Sacrament Young Family Ministry Having a new or young child can sometimes make a parent feel isolated. Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Visit Your Parish Library What Are the Magazines Saying? “China’s Christian Future,” by Yu Jie, First Things, August/September 2016: 49–54. Surprising to many is the growth of Christianity in China: seventy years after the Communist party founded the People’s Republic of China, the number of Christians has grown from half a million to more than sixty million and may top 200 million by 2030. This fascinating article describes the tenacity of Christians in the face of televised ‘confessions’, church demolitions to reduce the influence of Christians, and a drive by the Xi administration to end ‘overly popular’ religious activities, mentioning one religion, Christianity, and one symbol, the cross. The author describes the harrowing experiences he and his wife underwent before coming to the U.S. as well as analyzing the ways in which democracy is alive in church communities. “Dorothy Day: Model of Mercy,” by Robert Ellsberg, St. Anthony Messenger, August 2016: 26–30. The author as editor of The Catholic Worker from 1976-1978 worked with Dorothy Day, and has edited two books of her letters and selected writing. The cause for Day’s canonization has progressed as the archdiocese of New York begins to interview 52 witnesses to her life and to study her published works. ‘[I]t would be hard to think of another American Catholic… pointing exactly to towards the agenda that Pope Francis has outlined for the Church in the 21st century,’ Ellsberg writes. However, Day had her share of hard criticism: traitor, heretic, subversive, Communist. The article traces the common links of Pope Francis and Dorothy Day which led to his mention of her before Congress. “A Force for Radio Preservation,” by Christopher H. Sterling, Library of Congress Magazine, July/August 2016: 10–21. Radio broadcasting reflects much of America’s past. As a result, the National Recording Preservation Board (NRPB) at the Library of Congress works to ensure that history and culture are captured and preserved for generations to come. It’s a network of federal and academic groups and partners with NPR, the Newseum, and others. This article is one of several highlighting how this is done and some famous broadcasts, such as when Wilt Chamberlain smashed an NBA record in 1962 by scoring 100 points in a single game or Roosevelt’s address to the nation during the Depression, or the landing of Allied troops on Normandy beaches. All the magazines mentioned are in the library on the 2nd floor of the parish center. For more info, call 202.449.3974.

Chimes Chatter Can we state with certainty that we actually heard our chimes ring when near Church? Were we tuned-out? Inattentive? Or were the chimes on temporary suppression for repairs? A parishioner recently recounted that a new neighbor (in vicinity of the bell tower) remarked how lovely were the sounds of our chimes for the first week moving into their new house. However, after that fascination faded, the neighbor maintained they no longer “heard” the chimes, but alas, the Photo by Joe Bozik chimes were pealing! So what is it about this phenomenon of being “tuned-out”? Have you also observed on occasion you were certain you did not hear that last hour strike, but knew it must have tolled? Well nine times out of ten, the chimes were pealing, but we often seem to be engrossed in deep thought, concentrated prayer, focused conversation, etc. Welcome to the world phenomenon of brain stimulus overload concept. We purportedly have a finite capacity to process information, so when an overload of input occurs (during our deep conversation, concentrated prayer, etc), our brain reacts by sorting the information and shutting out those unessential stimuli. The chief focus of attention will be directed towards important stimuli, and information which are not so important will be looked over. Some of us are able to zone-out extemporaneous noise or distractions well, and accomplish reading a book on a noisy subway, or studying in a bustling cafeteria, or playing a video game while not realizing dinner “calls” (and the chimes just pealed unbeknownst to us); while many others require quiet spaces and minimal disturbances for reading, studying and concentrating. Regardless of the miscellaneous stimuli that permeates your everyday, if you desire more information about volunteering and “tuning-in” to the chimes, contact us - [email protected]

Christian Family Movement Ministry From 2009-2015, 57% of mass shootings where four or more were murdered were by intimate partners or family.* A Prayer For Help In Ending Violence Let us pray: Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have prayed in times of war, disaster and illness. We come to you Father and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which give respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be the peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community.
