PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Hi Families – Thank you to all the K-2 families who came out to join us for curriculum night on Thursday. 3rd and 4th grade families, we are looking forward to having you join us this upcoming Thursday from 5-6pm. Instruction is in full swing here at Walzem Academy. We appreciate your continued support with ensuring that your student is working hard and brining their best to school each day. Remember, we are going for 100% of students being on or above grade level by end of year, and we want all of our students to be millionaire readers! We hope you will also use the Mood Meter tool to talk through feelings with your student at home. For more info on what the Mood Meter is, ask your student what color they are feeling today J They will be able to explain this awesome tool to you!

AVERAGE DAILY ATTENDENCE Kinder: 97.03% First Grade: 98.65% Second Grade: 97.64% Third Grade: 97.96% Fourth Grade: 98.30% Scholars who achieve perfect attendance during the week are awarded a token and the opportunity to select a prize from the Treasure Tower. We have a high expectation and aspiration for perfect student attendance! Bringing your scholar to school every day helps ensure his or her success at IDEA, college, and beyond!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS Drop off and Pick Up Thank you parents for your feedback, support and most of all patience as we worked diligently to make sure our drop off and pick up lines were running efficiently. I am happy to say that we have consistently finished drop off and pick up within our 30 minute window this week and are getting better and better each day! Pick up line is finished by 4:15pm!

Walzem Academy 3rd & 4th gr. Curriculum Night Parents, please join us on this Thursday, September 8th for our annual Curriculum Night. You will have the opportunity to meet our Assistant Principals of Instruction and learn of our rigorous curriculum and approach to education. Our presentation will begin promptly at 5:00PM. Upcoming Student/Parent Lunch Sept. 9th – Kinder 10:30 am Sept. 16th – 1st gr. 11:00 am Sept. 30th – 2nd gr. 11:00 am FALL PICTURE DAY: (UNIFORMS) Academy Picture Day is Monday September 26th. Remember to wear your uniforms, do your hair, and bring your best smile! Packets should be going out from Homeroom Teachers by September 12th so be on the lookout.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS Attendance Counts! Make sure your scholar comes to school every day so they can be entered into the ATTENDANCE RAFFLE! We are raffling off our bikes (K-2) and air hockey tables (3rd -4th)! Every student here on Friday, September 2nd and Tuesday September 5th will be entered into the drawing TWICE! Students who are not in proper uniform will receive a call home. IMPORTANT NOTE: Friday Dress – Students may either wear the complete Friday dress OR wear their MondayThursday dress, but not a combination of the two (i.e. Students cannot wear blue jeans and their IDEA polo).

Walker Line Student Expectations Parents please review these expectations with your scholar if they are signed up for Walker Line pickup: 1. Walk 5 & 1 2. Sit silently in waiting room 3. Lister for your name and walk silently to exit Students who do not abide by these expectations may not be allowed to be revoked walker line privileges. Staying Hydrated During Recess We ask that parents send water bottles for their children to drink during recess. This will help all kids get hydrated without losing fun recess time. Student Drop Off: 7:15AM – 7:45 AM *Students arriving after 7:45 AM are marked tardy.

Grade Team Updates KINDER CORNER Happy Monday! Congratulations to our star student Jasmine Belmares, and our core value student Tuff Guys! Hope everyone enjoyed their 3 day weekend! Last week kinder learned all about REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE. Find some items at home that can be recycled or reused. FIRST GRADE CORNER First Grade Families, Thanks for those of you who attended Curriculum Night! We love sharing what are scholars are learning in the classroom first hand. If you were unable to attend, you are always welcomed to visit and observe your child's classroom. Check in at the front office, and obtain a visitor's pass. Please remember to complete and sign reading logs daily. There is no better lifework than reading every day. In addition to the reading log, your child has ELA and math lifework MondayThursday. Grade Team Updates THIRD GRADE CORNER Hello Third Grade Families! I can't believe it is already September! We hope your scholars are enjoying every minute of their IDEA experience. Thank you for entrusting them to our care! Upcoming events: First reading BWA- September 8th Second math BWA- September 15th *BWA stands for bi-weekly assessment. This test will assess if your scholar has mastered the content and concepts for the previous two weeks. 3rd-4th Grade Curriculum Night- September 8th from 5-6 pm Reminders: West Wing is held daily from 11-11:30 am for any student that does not have complete lifework and/or reading log. Lifework is mandatory and necessary for your scholar's growth. It is not enough for students to just complete it; it must be turned in daily. We have had a lot of students in West Wing, and we want to cut down on numbers. Less students in West Wing means more students are give 100% to Closing the Achievement Gap! Have a wonderful week! FOURTH GRADE CORNER Please join our 4th grade team at our Curriculum Night Sept. 8, 2016 from 5-6pm. Shout out to all of our 4th grade students who completed their first BWA last week! Mr. De Leon is so proud of all of their hard work. Reminder: Students should be wearing a black belt everyday with their tucked in polo. Lifework reminders: Parents/Guardians please ensure you are signing your child's reading log after they read every night. Our 4th grade students are taking their writing STAAR this year, so we are requiring 2 complete sentences to help in their writing classes.
