Axiom

Week 3 – Triune Godhead

“I believe in an eternal God who created time and space” Genesis 1:1-31 – Who are the “us” and “our” pronouns referring to in the decision to make mankind?

What Does it Matter That God is Triune? Message by Pastor Todd Arnett Part 3 of 9 :: May 14-15, 2011

Isaiah 42:1-9 – Can you find all three members of the Triune Godhead in this passage? Matthew 3:1-17 – Also read these other passages and compare the differences: Mark 1:1-13, Luke 3:1-23, John 1:19-34 John 17:1-26 – How is God’s tri-personal relationship within Himself an example for our relationships with each other?

We believe in one God, who is self-existent, eternal, and infinite. We believe that He, while being the same in essence, has revealed Himself as three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Get Ready for Next Weekend: Luke 15:11-32 – The father’s love and forgiveness are obvious in this story, but what other characteristics can you list?

What Does it Mean?

Genesis 1:1, Genesis 1:26, 27

Preparation for Group: 1. To Whom do you normally address your prayers – the Father, the Son, the Spirit, all Three? 2. Theology is good for us, but so is eating Brussels sprouts. Do you enjoy reading/thinking about deeper truths of God? 3. How would you explain the Tri-une God to a child?

Suggested from Pastor Todd: How do you respond to the fact that God is bigger than you can comprehend? Is it unsettling or comforting?

We believe that God is of one essence who lives in a perfect ______________ relationship of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Matthew 3:16, 17, Matthew 28:19, 1 Peter 1:2

Because these concepts were so hard to explain, the early Church employed some visual tools to try to describe a Triune God:

“He creates the universe, already foreseeing – or should we say “seeing”? there are no tenses in God – the buzzing cloud of flies about the cross, the flayed back pressed against the uneven stake, the nails driven through the mesial nerves, the repeated torture of back and arms as it is time after time, for breath’s sake, hitched up. If I may dare the biological image, God is a ‘host’ who deliberately creates His own parasites; causes us to be that we may exploit and ‘take advantage of’ Him. Herein is love. This is the diagram of Love Himself, the inventor of all loves.” - C. S. Lewis, The Four Loves
