What Are Your Summer Plans? Want to Help Make Miracles Happen?

By S. Apodaca Three years ago this summer my husband and I met Luis (not his Summer Miracles program goal of increasing the awareness of the real name), a young boy who would forever change and enrich our plight of orphaned children requires many dedicated people to make it lives. Luis came to live with us for a few weeks through a program work. It is a Kidsave International (www.kidsave.org) program which called Summer Miracles. We knew his visit would present challenges Kidsave Austin, the local grassroots chapter, has been participating in for at least a couple of reasons. First, we normally do not have for years. Kidsave is not an adoption agency, but its mission is to end children living under our care whose needs require a change in our the harmful institutionalization of children. No, not a simple mission, busy schedules. Secondly, we primarily speak English and knew that but absolutely worthwhile. For many international orphans over age Luis, coming from Colombia, would speak only Spanish. No problem, 7, it is the only glimmer of hope for the chance to enjoy childhood we like a challenge and there was proof that many families before us and for a future which does not end in crime or suicide. had successfully met the challenge. Luis’ adoptive parents have been gracious enough to allow us to Our goal that summer was to give an older orphaned child a life- remain a part of his life. Playing a part in his family miracle continues changing opportunity simply by giving him a fun summer experience to bring pleasure beyond any I ever thought to imagine. Luis speaks outside his orphanage walls and introducing him to friends and others fluent English now, is a model student in school, and is having fun in our community. We read the program rules, participated in the exploring his love of music, poetry, math and other worlds now open training, volunteered efforts and time in the fund raisers, and took to him. He is flourishing under the care and guidance of his adoptive all recommended measures to prepare for a summer with Luis. Our parents! preparation did pave the path for a summer of growth, fun surprises, Kidsave Austin is seeking hosts, translators, golfers (tournament and newly made friends. But can one ever really prepare for the May 10), and other volunteers who are interested in making miracles awesome power and teachings of a miracle? happen for more children this summer. What are your plans? I hope The miracle to which I refer is that Luis ultimately met an amazing you enjoy them as much as I am sure we will enjoy ours as we gear couple who decided to pursue his adoption. The following summer up for another year of participation in the Summer Miracles program, Luis was back in Austin with his new forever family. It sounds so and I hope you will join us. simple. While the concept may be simple, the reality is not. The

IBIZ DISTRICTS:

Independent Business Investment Zone

Imagine a city filled with neighborhood districts supporting unique, independent businesses serving the needs of customers as shopping destinations, social gathering places and centers for neighborhood culture. AIBA has developed a program to assist neighborhood business districts in becoming IBIZ Districts. These areas may range from a few blocks to a larger zone and are home to an exciting variety of locally owned businesses offering a unique blend of goods and services not found in chain stores or big box retailers. Each IBIZ district reflects the culture, not just of Austin, but of the local neighborhood it is in. The businesses in each district host various events and invite you out for a day or evening of local festivities. Explore the links to each district for which businesses reside there and what they have to offer. The disappearance of local businesses leaves a social and economic void that is palpable and real, even when it is unmeasured. The quality of life in Austin changes in ways that seem subtle but the changes in the nature of our community are profound. Most people embrace the idea of distinctive businesses with local character, but often forget that the survival of these businesses depends on your patronage. The study revealed Modest changes in consumer spending habits can generate substantial local economic impact. For every $100 in customer spending at a chain store resulted in the total local economic impact is only $13. The same amount spent with a local merchant yields $45, more than three times the local economic impact. Development of urban sites with directly competitive chain merchants will reduce the overall vigor of the local economy and ultimately the purchasing choices you, the customer, have. New and different local merchants bring a complementary (instead of competing) line of goods to the market, leading to increased choices among merchants with similar but unique lines of goods. Each time we spend a dollar, we should consider the full value of our choices, and remember that each dollar is a vote for the future direction of our community. The votes we cast with our dollars every day influence our community at least as much as those cast on election days. Many customers are under-informed about the values independent businesses provide, both individually and collectively. With better information, customers might more often choose to patronize local businesses because it benefits the community. Local owners with much of their life savings invested in their businesses have a natural interest in the long-term health of the community. Chain stores are not inherently bad. Indeed, they deliver a consistent level of goods and services we appreciate. What would be bad is if we woke up to find nothing but chain stores, that Austin had been reduced to “Anywhere, USA”. Each year brings more national chains displacing locally owned businesses. AIBA aims to reverse the trend of losing locally owned independent businesses by organizing collaborative efforts among members and creating a stronger bond between local businesses and the community.
