SERMON SERIES: BRANDE Wearing the Character of Chris SERMON: DRUN 11-14-2 OPENER AND REVIEW New Series: Brande Are you wearing the brand of Christ? When people look at you can they clearly see you have the mark of Jesus on your life Can you be identi ed to be af liated with Jesus Are you wearing the Character of Christ Over the next few weeks we are going to have a “BEING LIKE JESUS CHALLENGE.” We are going to be talking about habits involved in being like Jesus and incorporating these habits into our lives. Last week’s sermon and today’s sermon is a two-part introduction to this series. If you were not here last week or have not listened to last week’s sermon go online or watch last week’s service on FB DEDICATING OURSELVES TO FORMING GOOD HABITS IS A WAY TO BECOMING LIKE JESUS But we can get the wrong idea about growing good habits. We might think that it comes down to personal will power. We might get the idea that being like Jesus is gritting your teeth and trying really hard. If you get that idea you are getting the wrong idea Jesus lived a supernatural life. He touched people and they were healed. He turned ordinary water into wine. He raised people from the dead. He loved people who hated him. He forgave people who hurt him. JESUS LIVED A SUPERNATURAL LIFE OF JOY, CONFIDENCE, PEACE AND POWER WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE TO IMITATE WITHOUT SUPERNATURAL HELP YOU WILL NEVER LIVE THE SUPERNATURAL JESUS LIFE THROUGH YOUR NATURAL EFFORTS

Jesus said… John 14:15-19 (NLT) If you love me, obey my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he

2 of 7 lives with you now and later will be in you. 18 No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you. 19 Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live When Jesus said, “If you love me, obey me, if you love me, do what I do, If you love me, be like me”………. he didn’t then go on and give them a long list of things they needed to do. No, he said, ‘AND’ I will send you a helper so you can be like me BEING LIKE JESUS IS THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Imagine being one of the 12 disciples with Jesus and he tells you he is leaving. You have been with him for 3 years. You have come to depend on him, rely on him, follow him even day. He tells you where you are going and makes your agenda every day. When you feel down or weak He encourages you. He knows just the right thing to say. You learn something new from Him everyday. You have have grown to love Him deeply. So……..You would be “What? You are leaving us?” But, Jesus says, “It is to your advantage that I go. Because I am sending you another helper. Now, don’t think I am abandoning you. I’,m not. I’m coming back to you. MY SPIRIT will be with you! Like me, but not like me. Better for you. Because He will not only be with you but in you! I am sending you MY SPIRIT We see after Jesus ascended to heaven in Acts Chapter 2 that once the disciples were ‘FILLED’ with the Holy Spirit they were changed drastically and the church grew dramatically I.

TO BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT IS TO BE CONTROLLED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

ILLUSTRATION Courtney went in for a blood transfusion this week. She needed iron. She said, wow I have so much more energy. Being lled with the Holy Spirit is not like going in for a blood transfusion and getting pumped up with new energy. The Holy Spirit is not a substance. He is a Person. IN SEEKING THE FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WE CANNOT JUST SEEK THE EXPERIENCE WE HAVE FOCUSED ON THE EXPERIENCE MORE THAN WE HAVE THE EVIDENCE

WE CAN’T JUST DESIRE THE EXPERIENCE OF GOD WITHOUT WANTING THE INFLUENCE OF GOD IN OUR LIVES

3 of 7

THE REAL EVIDENCE OF BEING FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT IS NOT AN EXPERIENCE THE REAL EVIDENCE IS THE TRANSFORMATION OF BECOMING LIKE JESUS II. TO BE CONTROLLED YOU HAVE TO GIVE UP CONTRO FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT TO HAVE CONTROL YOU HAVE TO GIVE UP CONTROL Yield, submit, humble yourself. The secret to the lling of the Holy Spirit is absolute and total surrender to Jesus Christ, and anything the Spirit points out in your life that needs to be given to Him, at that moment, you give it to Him TO BE FILLED YOU HAVE TO EMPTY YOURSELF ILLUSTRATION I am very picky about my pillows. I don’t like at pillows. Recently I had to buy new pillows. Full pillow case III. HOW DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT HELPS US There are many ways that the Holy Spirit works in our lives, but they all share one common goal: to make us more like Jesus 1. The Holy Spirit Guides Us Into All Truth John 16:13 (NLT) When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. What Jesus is telling us here is that the Holy Spirit will guide us in the direction we need to go. The Holy Spirit will not leave us in confusion but will reveal the truth to us. He illuminates the dark areas of our lives to give us a clear vision of God’s purpose for us. He will warn us of things to come. He will help us to discern between the truth and the lies of this world. 2. The Holy Spirit Convicts Us Of Si John 16:8 (NLT) And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.” Since the Holy Spirit is working to make us like Jesus, he convicts us of our sin. Sin is something that will always offend God and hold us back. If we have sin, which we do, He will bring those sins to our attention

CONVICTION IS YOUR BEST FRIEND IF WE STOP FEELING CONVICTION THEN WE HAVE BIGGER PROBLEMS

4 of 7

TRUE HOLY SPIRIT CONVICTION COMES BEFORE SIN HAPPENS CONVICTION IS NOT ONLY AFTER SIN BECAUSE YOU ARE SORRY FOR THE CONSEQUENCES The Holy Spirit will start to tap on your heart once temptation comes. It is our responsibility to respond to that conviction. Temptation in itself is not a sin. Jesus was tempted and did not sin. Giving in to temptation is what brings sin. The Holy Spirit will nudge your heart before you make the move. Listen to Him. 3. The Holy Spirit Teaches and Reveals God’s Word To Us John 14:26 (NLT) But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative— that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. When Jesus walked on this Earth, He taught everywhere he went. Since He is not here physically, the Holy Spirit has now taken that role. He does it by revealing God’s word to us through the Bible. 4. The Holy Spirit Brings Us Closer To Other Believer Acts 4:32 (NLT) All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had.” The book of Acts describes the early church after receiving the Holy Spirit. It was the very Holy Spirit of God that brought about this kind of unity. This is the unity we need in the body of Christ today. The Holy Spirit will place love in our hearts for our brothers and sisters and we will be compelled to unite. There’s power in numbers. The Holy Spirit knows this and wants to bring about that power in the church. 5. The Holy Spirit Gives Us Wisdom, Revelation and Power 1 Corinthians 2:9-12 NLT) No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” 10 But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. 11 No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. 12 And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us

6. The Holy Spirit Gives Supernatural Gifts to U Romans 12 are prophesying, serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leadership, and mercy.

1 Corinthians 12:4–11 includes the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, speaking in tongues and interpretation of tongues. 1 Corinthians 12:28 includes healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. 7. The Holy Spirit Helps in Us In Our Weakness and Intercedes For Us Romans 8:26-27 (NLT) In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God We all have times we feel weak and don’t know what to do. The Holy Spirit helps us line up with God’s will during those times by praying for us. He knows our heart and He knows God’s will. Who better to pray for you than the Spirit of God that knows everything about you IV. HOW ARE YOU FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT? 1. DRIN Ephesians 5:18 (NLT) Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be lled with the Holy Spirit How are you lled with the Holy Spirit. We need to start with the closest parallel: How do you get drunk with wine? You drink it. Lots of it. The wine of Paul’s day was so weak you would have to drink for hours to get drunk. SO HOW DO YOU GET DRUNK (OR FILLED) WITH THE SPIRIT YOU DRINK IT! LOTS OF IT Effects of getting drunk. Something you take on the inside shows up on the outside. In your actions, speech, thoughts, Paul said ......1 Corinthians 12:13, (NIV) For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drin

6 of 7 that please the Spirit. 6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace Drinking the Spirit means thinking on the things of the Spirit, directing your attention to the things of the Spirit, being concerned about and devoted to the things of the Spirit IF YOU DO THIS LONG ENOUGH, YOU WILL GET DRUNK WITH THE SPIRIT IN FACT YOU WILL GET ADDICTED TO THE SPIRIT INSTEAD OF A CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY YOU WILL DEVELOP A SPIRIT DEPENDENCY DRINK AND PRAY - DRINK AND PRAY - DRINK AND PRA • READ THE WORD OF GO 2 Timothy 3:16 (NLT) All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. Hebrews 4:12 says, The Word of God is alive and powerful Ephesians 6:17 The Word of God is called the Sword of the Spirit • BE NEAR THOSE FULL OF THE SPIRI John 7:38-39  Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will ow from his heart.’ ” 39 (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.) 2. AS John 4:9-10 (NLT) The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?” 10  Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”

CLOSING Luke 11:11-13 (NLT) You fathers—if your children ask for a sh, do you give them a snake instead? 12 Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not! 13 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”
