The 2016 Winter/Spring Season of Fine Arts at Westminster offers a diverse array of events featuring music, drama, and visual art. There is something here for everyone! From the serious to the light-hearted, these high quality offerings are intended to inspire and enrich our lives. The Fine Arts Series at Westminster relies on private and corporate donations. Westminster’s Anchor Coffee House is a relaxed, family-friendly venue featuring local, regional and nationally known folk, bluegrass and blues artists. In addition to music, delicious Fair Trade coffee, fresh hot tea and homemade desserts are available for purchase while you enjoy the music! Free childcare is provided at each performance. Please visit www.westpres.org/artmusic to see this year’s line-up! Tickets range from $12-$20 per show and can be purchased in the Church Office or at the door.

Music & the Arts at Westminster At Westminster, you can immerse yourself in the arts! We offer children’s choirs and a choir for adults. Our bell choirs include elementary school ringers through adult ringers. Also, visit the latest exhibition in our Art Gallery on the church’s lower level. Come experience God through music, art, drama, and more!

JOIN US THIS SEASON FOR... Fine Arts Series Programs Milonga featuring The Des Moines Tango Trio Sunday, February, 21 at 3:00 p.m. A “milonga” is a term for tango party. Join the Des Moines Tango Trio and guests Valerie Williams and Larry Gleason for an afternoon of tango music and dance. Come hear why the tango is often called the “dance of the heart” – then put your dancing shoes on and try a few steps yourself!

Westminster Organ Concert featuring Mark Babcock

Sunday, March 6 at 3:00 p.m. Westminster is blessed with a fantastic Dobson Organ and even more-blessed with a musician like Mark Babcock to bring it to life. This recital will feature the music of J.S. Bach. Mark will host many talented musicians from Westminster and the community in a collection of organ/ instrument duets.

Sacred Harp Iowa All-Day Sing

Saturday, April 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sacred Harp or “shape-note” singing traces its roots back to 1844. Notes are defined shapes and thus aid in the learning of the music. Patrons sit in the round. There is no set leader and the group members take turns leading. This creates a marvelous musical style. Join us for all day or a few minutes. Per tradition, there will be a pot-luck “dinner on the grounds” in Westminster Hall at noon.

April 28, 29 & 30 at 7:30 p.m. and May 1 at 2:00 p.m. Ticketed performances, learn more at www.westminsterfinearts.org In honor of the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, Unexpected Company, in partner with the Fine Arts Series, explores Shakespeare’s legacy, weaving together a collection of scenes, songs, soliloquies, and sonnets that show why he remains “not of an age, but for all time.”

Arts in Worship Programs The Rutter Requiem

Friday, March 25, at 7:00 p. m. In the Sanctuary Join us on Good Friday for a special presentation of John Rutter’s haunting and beautiful setting of The Requiem. A blend of the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, the Psalms, and the Requiem Mass, Rutter’s music is a fitting tribute to Christ’s loving sacrifice.

Easter Celebration

Sunday, March 27, at 8:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. “And on the third day, the Earth changed forever…” Please worship with us as we celebrate the holiest day in the Christian calendar. Bells, brass, organ and choir unite to proclaim “Christ is risen indeed!”

Songs of Love and Praise Jeff Mosher in Concert Sunday, May, 15 at 3:00 p.m. Our final offering for the season is one many years in the works. Jeff Mosher grew up here at Westminster and since has gone on to a professional singing career at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. As a child, his choir and musical experiences at Westminster helped develop Jeff’s life-long love of music and performing. We are proud to welcome Jeff home again for a recital.
