Believing the Truth |John 5:19-47 Doug Sachtleben, Lead Pastor February 4, 2017

Jesus answers the accusation that He is “making himself equal with God,” by showing His accusers that is they who stand condemned for rejecting the authority of God’s Word, as it testifies to the identity of the Son of God. Background

If we imagine John 5:19-47 as a courtroom in which Jesus answers His accusers, He will first confess that He is equal with God (5:19-29), though in a way they don’t fully grasp. Then, He will produce the testimony that proves His identity (5:30-47).

1. The Identity of the Son: Equal but Dependent (5:19-29)

Jesus possesses the power to raise the dead.

The Father has delegated final judgment authority to Jesus.

Is there a contradiction between faith in 5:24 and works in 5:29?

2. Testimony to the Son’s Identity: Works, Witness, and Word (5:30-47)

Questions to Consider 1. Why is the authority of God’s Word such a crucial and fundamental doctrine to understand and believe? 2. Jesus is fully God and thus equal with the Father. However, He also showed dependence on the Father and obedience to the Father. Jesus subordinated Himself to the Father in function. How might those truths be applied to our thinking about authority and submission in such areas as marriage or church leadership? 3. How do we reconcile the appearance of a contradiction between faith in John 5:24 and works in 5:29? 4. How did the works (signs) of Jesus testify to His divinity (cf. John 20:31)? 5. The doctrine of illumination is referred to throughout Psalm 119 (including v. 18). Why is illumination important and how do we see the opposite of illumination in John 5:39? 6. In what chief way does the Old Testament law point to the need for a Savior (Hint: Galatians 2:16)?
