Julie Fowler and Wayne Caswell were elected as new directors at the annual meeting on May 22 by members present and by proxy. They replace John Shumaker and Jeremie Gordon whose terms expired. Please thank the retiring directors and congratulate the new ones. Julie will oversee the pool committee, and Wayne will chair publications, including website and newsletter. Minutes of the annual meeting and board meetings get posted to the Bella Vista website (www.bellavista-hoa.com/ bellavista/home.asp), along with presentation material from the annual meeting in case you missed it. If you’re registered for the site, you can check your profile to select what email notifications to get. And while you’re there, update other profile information, including your photo if you like. Monthly Board meetings begin at 6:00 p.m. at the RealManage office (10800 Pecan Park Blvd, Suite, 100, Austin, TX 78750) on the first Wednesday of each month and a notice will be posted on the Bella Vista website at least 3 days before the meeting. HAVE YOU HEARD? The “Bella Vista, Cedar Park” Facebook group is less formal than the newsletter or website but is a fun and interactive way to socialize with neighbors and participate in the community. After 7 years in our home, a large live oak with 18” diameter trunk was showing stress and less vigorous growth than trees around us. It seemed to be suffering from a similar problem that we noticed in our previous home. Back then we called Don Gardner, a consulting arborist recommended by The Natural Gardner and their Saturday morning AM talk show. He helped us save the tree, so we called him again. I’m writing to share what we learned, with tips to help you protect your beautiful and valuable trees, as well as those of your neighbors. I’ll address two specific issues: fill dirt and oak wilt. Fill Dirt Our previous problem was related to builders and homeowners adding too much dirt around the trunk. That seemed like the logical cause since it can take more than five years for symptoms to appear. But we also worried that it might be oak wilt, or the fact that our driveway covered 40% of the root system. Don seemed to sense right away what the problem was, and he quickly ruled out oak wilt and the driveway, saying roots would naturally compensate by growing in the other direction. He dug down about six inches to where the tree trunk flanges out and its big roots show. As he did, he described two problems. First was that dirt around the tree trunk causes fungus to form and eat away the bark, which we could see was already happening. Second was that all those smaller surface roots that encircled the trunk were strangling the tree, so he cut them off. Making the problem worse was the water discharge of our automatic hose winder dumping to the base of the tree. It was feeding both the fungus and those surface roots. From the photo, you can see that I’ve now cleared all of that space around the trunk and will probably fill the void with large river rocks. Here’s my three-point recovery program: • Remove all soil or mulch around the trunk until you see the flange. • Spread 1-2 inches of a good compost under and just beyond the drip line to encourage root growth out away from the driveway. We used Ladybug Revitalizer. • Have all of the dead wood trimmed off, but not between February 1 and July 1 when the tree goes through its spring growth spurt.

Oak Wilt Oak wilt is the most destructive disease affecting live oaks and red oaks in Central Texas. Once established, usually by beetles carrying fungal spores from infected trees to fresh open wounds on healthy oaks, the disease can quickly spread from tree-to-tree through interconnected roots. Those wounds can be caused by wind, construction, squirrels, birds or pruning, and that’s why you should follow these tips when pruning. • If possible, avoid pruning between February 1 and July 1. Exceptions include addressing public safety issues, repairing tree damage, removing limbs that rub on buildings, or for clearance of construction equipment. • If hiring a service, make sure they clean all pruning tools with 10% bleach solution or Lysol™ between sites and/or trees. • Always paint fresh wounds with wound dressing or latex paint, including pruning cuts and stumps. • Have any debris from diseased oaks immediately burned or chipped and buried. • If you are uncertain about any of this, consult a certified arborist or government specialist. "Ultraviolet light, or UV exposure, has been linked to the development of macular degeneration, cataracts and other visionloss problems," said Dr. Elizabeth Baze, assistant professor of ophthalmology at BCM. Baze offered tips you can practice to help protect your eyes from sun damage this summer. • The more the sunglasses wrap around and shield your eyes and the skin around the eyes, the more protection you have. • Sunglasses need to provide 99 to 100 percent UV protection. • Sunblock is a must, including the skin around the eyes. • A broad-brimmed hat can add extra protection. If you have an existing eye condition like macular degeneration or cataracts, protecting your eyes from the sun should be a top priority during the summer, she said.
