City Asking Residents, Businesses And Home Owners Associations To Remove Standing Water Recent rains provide breeding conditions for mosquitoes, West Nile Virus Recent heavy rainfall was a welcome relief to the Central Texas drought. However, the standing water left over from the rains is an ideal habitat for mosquitoes to lay eggs which will grow into larvae and eventually new mosquitoes which can carry West Nile Virus. In light of recent reports of mosquitoes carrying WNV in Texas and a WNV death in Williamson County, the City of Cedar Park is asking all residents, businesses home owners associations to please inspect their properties for standing water and remove it right away. “It is very important that citizens do their part to eliminate any potential mosquito breeding grounds,” Cedar Park Emergency Management Coordinator Michael Clanton says. “West Nile Virus should be taken seriously, and it is important that everyone does their part to keep the community safe.” Places to look include wheelbarrows, rain gutters, buckets, plastic covers, toys, or any other containers where mosquitoes can breed. The Williamson County and Cities Health District also recommends taking the following steps to eliminate stagnant water:
Copyright © 2012 Peel, Inc.
• Empty and change the water in pet drinking bowls, bird baths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels, and potted plant trays every 4 to 5 days to destroy potential mosquito habitats • Drain or fill temporary pools of water with dirt • Keep swimming pool water treated and circulating • Clean out rain gutters • Remove discarded tires or keep them dry and covered • Add an aerator to ponds and water gardens or add fish that will eat mosquitos and larvae • Remove debris (leaves, twigs, trash) from ditches and low areas • Fill in ruts and holes that collect standing water For areas where standing water cannot be removed, the City asks residents and business owners to add the bacterial agent Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), which may be purchased at most home improvement stores. Bt is a naturally occurring disease of insects that is commonly used to treat stagnant water for mosquitoes. To report potential mosquito habitats such as stagnant water ponds, abandoned swimming pools, or discarded tires, please call the City of Cedar Park’s Code Enforcement Division at 512-401-5206. The City also recommends that everyone avoid mosquito stings and West Nile Virus by wearing insect repellant and long sleeved shirts with long pants outdoors, and stay indoors at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

NEW “BE A HERO...ADOPT!” HERO SELECTED
Humane Society of Williamson County Elects New Hero for 4th Quarter, 2012! The Humane Society of Williamson County (HSWC) elects the Johnson Family as its featured Heroes for 4th Quarter 2012. In appreciation, HSWC’s featured Heroes are given a professional photo shoot courtesy of KAJ Photography and their story and photos promoted by HSWC and appears on HSWC’s homepage. In line with HSWC’s slogan, “Be a hero... adopt!”, the Heroes program helps promote adoption throughout our community. The Johnson family of Cedar Park, TX, featured in the attached photos, adopted a two year old American Pit Bull mix named Sonya in April 2011. After experiencing the heartbreaking loss of their dog, Aries, who was with the family for 12 wonderful years and throughout the lifetimes of the Johnson family’s two daughters, they decided to adopt a shelter dog in memory of Aries. The family’s positive adoption experience convinced them to submit a featured hero application to HSWC. Eric Johnson says that, “As we went by the outdoor pens, a small black and white Staffordshire mix put her paw through the fence and onto Sami’s foot. She didn’t bark, just looked up at my girls like she was saying, “It’s ok. Things will get better!” Sami and Erika (the Johnson family’s daughters) lost it. Sami immediately said, “This is my new dog!” Erika agreed.” Eric went on to say that he got tears in his eyes as he witnessed the exchange between Sonya and his girls. Their adoption story goes on to tell of coincidences with HSWC volunteers at Eric’s workplace, Sonya’s intake date of nearly one year prior being the same as Cinda Johnson’s birthday, and the kisses received from Sonya through her kennel walls when the family returned to HSWC to finalize her adoption. “Sonya has been practically perfect in every way,” continued Eric. “She is house broken... sits, lays down, and comes when called... but most of all she is a constant companion with my girls and Cinda and me. She even rotates sleeping at the foot of the bed of the girls and me and momma. Finally, I just want to thank the shelter staff for not giving up on Sonya. I know deep down inside, she was just waiting for us... to heal us and become one of us!”

“We absolutely love to hear the success stories of our once homeless dogs and cats that have been adopted into loving Forever Families! The Heroes program is just one simple way that HSWC can express to our adopters and to our community how appreciative we are that they have chosen adoption and been a part of HSWC’s No Kill mission. Our sincerest gratitude goes out to the Johnson family and all supporters of animal adoption and advocacy in our community! Without this support, HSWC could not continue its life-saving mission of eliminating pet homelessness throughout Central Texas” said Eran Fehily, HSWC Director of Community Relations & Development. Of course, each and every person who adopts a pet from HSWC and gives them a loving, forever home is a HSWC hero because they save the lives of two animals, the one they adopted and the rescued homeless animal that can use the empty kennel at HSWC. Over 70% of the animals at HSWC come from local municipal shelters that kill for space. Any HSWC adopter is eligible to submit an application to be a Featured Hero. More information on the Heroes program can be found at www.hswc.net/heroes. To view all of Sonya’s heroic adoption story and pictures as well as past elected Heroes, please visit www.hswc.net/heroes. Humane Society of Williamson County Background Information The Humane Society of Williamson County (HSWC) operates a No-Kill animal shelter on 22 acres in Leander, Texas. HSWC’s mission is to provide innovative programs and services to eliminate pet homelessness and to improve the lives of pets and people throughout Central Texas. In 2011, HSWC adopted over 2,280 dogs and cats and spay/neutered over 3,500 animals at their low cost clinic. HSWC is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, celebrating over thirty two years of finding forever homes for deserving pets. HSWC is 100% funded by donations, grants and modest fees for services and receives no government funding. It is located at 10930 E. Crystal Falls Parkway, Leander, Texas. Bella Vista Can I give my dog Thanksgiving scraps? Submitted by Kristen West
We know it’s tempting, but most Thanksgiving scraps are not safest treat for your pets. Cooked turkey bones are a big no-no as they can splinter and result in a trip to pet ER. Additionally, overindulging your pet in other fatty foods can lead to stomach upset, diarrhea or even life-threatening pancreatitis. Other items to avoid are onion, sage, garlic ... and please, don’t ever give your pet alcohol. If you can't turn away from those puppy-dog eyes, a bite or two of pet-safe veggies like plain broccoli, sweet potato or carrots, or a small taste of plain turkey is usually OK. Put the treats in a Kong or other puzzle toy while you sit down to eat with your family so that your furry begger is happily preoccupied! Prmrs_66435 _- Rdns Gen Ad #1803 -THIS AD CAN NOT BE EDITED-

Secret Santa Gift Program Would you like to help us make the holidays brighter for hundreds of Central Texas foster children! Secret Santa is a special holiday gift program of the Adoption Coalition of Texas (ACT) helping Child Protective Services and foster families provide gifts and spread holiday cheer to Central Texas foster children through the generosity of community donors. If you would like to be a Secret Santa this year and purchase holiday gifts for a Central Texas foster child, please email your name, email address and contact phone number to ACTSecretSanta@gmail. com. The gift drop-off days will be at several Austin-area locations on Wednesday through Saturday, December 5 – 8, and caseworkers will be picking up the gifts the following week.
