Volume 1, Issue 1

LETTER FROM the PRESIDENT: Greetings neighbors and I hope you all are enjoying the autumn temperatures and refreshing rains. Everything is bright green and growing quickly, including weeds in the flowerbed….. It has been a very hectic and productive summer for the HOA. We have worked very hard to reduce costs, improve services and as a result, dues will remain the same for 2010. Also, we will have sufficient funds to contribute the increased amount to the replacement fund as recommended by the reserve study. Please take a look at the updated Bella Vista website where you can find Board meeting minutes, financials, 2009 annual meeting presentation, committee contacts, reserve study, events calendar, links to pay dues and report issues observed in the neighborhood: www.bellavista-hoa.com. Unfortunately we’ve experienced several acts of vandalism at the pool and other areas of the neighborhood recently. We have reported these events to the proper authorities (Travis County Sheriff’s Dept) to no avail; therefore, the Board is offering a reward for information on who may have been involved in these acts. We are also looking for someone to spearhead a Neighborhood Watch program which has proven to be a successful deterrent to crime in other neighborhoods. Thanks to everyone that volunteered to fill the open Board positions. We interviewed and selected two very capable new board members. If you are interested in running for the Board, we will have 4 open positions to fill at the annual meeting in May. We have participated in the MUD Board meetings and are happy to report the tax rate has been reduced again by 19% to $.50 per $100. Sincerely, Veronica Frederick

Nature Watch - A River of Raptors

One of the most dramatic natural events occurs every fall when changing weather patterns mark the migration of hawks (also called raptors, or birds of prey) from their summer nesting and breeding grounds to their wintering grounds in South America. While northward migration in the spring months is more sporadic and allows for hawks to spread out over a larger geographic area, fall migration is the more spectacular of the two, with millions of hawks observed overhead in concentrated groups within a period of only a few months. Scientists believe that hawks use a myriad of tools to find their way along migratory routes. First and foremost, they orient themselves by using a sun compass, or knowing where the sun should be at any given time of day. Some also use a polarization pattern of light for orientation, and are able to find the portion of

Kettle of Hawks the sky where light is uni-directional and utilize it to estimate the sun’s position. Lastly, most hawks bring into play a magnetic compass, which allows them to orient themselves to the Earth’s magnetic field. In order to get airborne and use these internal orientation systems, hawks find thermals, or large columns of warm air, and ride these rising air currents in a spiral, high into the sky. From

this vantage point, they glide slowly down in the intended direction, and search for the next thermal to help move them along their way. From these elevated perspectives, hawks generally navigate by large geographic features or landmarks, such as coastlines, waterways, and mountain ranges. The most common species of hawk that migrate over our area start with the Mississippi kite, continue with the Broadwinged hawk, and end with Swainson’s hawk. Dark gray above and pale gray below with a red eye, long pointed wings, and a dark flared tail, the Mississippi kite hunts primarily insects, eats on the wing, and nests in loose colonies in woodlands and swamps in the southeast and south central United States. Brown-gray above with white underwings bordered in black, and a broad (Continued on Page 7) (Continued on Page 5)

Bella Vista Nature Watch - (Continued from Page 4) tail with black and white bands, the Broad-winged hawk breeds in the eastern woodlands of the United States and southern Canada. The largest of the three, the Swainson’s hawk light morph is the color form that is most likely seen in our area. In flight, their long, narrow pointed wings exhibit a dark trailing edge and light leading edge, a dark chest bib, and light face and lower belly. These hawks hunt chiefly small mammals and insects in the grassland areas of the western United States and Canada. Large groups of hawks flying overhead are called kettles. During fall migration, single kettles of 10,000 hawks are routine, and single flights of over 100,000 hawks or more have been recorded. Occasionally, a strong cold front will ground several thousand hawks for the day and result in an overnight roost. Weather in the northern and eastern United States is one of the biggest factors in determining the timing of these migratory flights. With the large number of hawks taking part in this annual event and the vast geographic areas that they cover, it was late into the 19th century before migration was beginning to be understood. With large populations of hawks shifting from breeding to wintering habitat, migration is a seasonal and predicable event that can be enjoyed year after year! Holiday Pet Tips Submitted by Melissa Todd

As you celebrate the season, it’s important to keep your furry friends safe and stress-free. Household changes and activity can be very hard on pets. • Be careful with holiday decorations. Many plants and berries (poinsettias, mistletoe, ivy and holly to name a few) can be toxic to pets. Also be careful where you hang ornaments and decorations…the higher the better! • Gatherings of people and holiday parties can frighten animals. Plan a safe place for them to retreat too when company arrives or when Halloween doorbells are ringing. • Holiday leftovers can wreak havoc with your pet’s digestive system. This is especially true with older pets. Turkey drippings, poultry bones and chocolate can all result in a trip to the emergency vet.

Bella Vista Outdoor Water Conservation Tips Even though we use water every day, it’s easy to take it for granted. Just imagine how you would function without clean water. It’s everyone’s responsibility to conserve and protect water resources. The decisions and actions you make today truly affect our water resources for the future. The following suggestions will help you get in the habit of saving water in the great outdoors: • •

• • •

Report any vandolism or acts of violence in your neighborhood.

Use mulch around landscape plantings. Mulch will help eliminate weeds and hold moisture in the soil. Select hardy plants that don’t need much water. Native plants that are well adapted to your climate and soils will survive well without supplemental watering. A copy of the Steiner Ranch Approved Plant list is available on the website at www.steinerranchhoa. org. Water during the cool part of the day to avoid rapid evaporation. When watering is necessary, water slowly and thoroughly. If you notice puddles or runoff, turn water off and wait for water to soak in. Also be sure your sprinkler puts water where you need it—not on driveways or sidewalks. Wash cars efficiently. First give the car a quick rinse, and then turn the water off. Wash one section of the car at a time and rinse that section quickly. Turn the water off each time. Visit www.auduboninternational.org for more conservation tips.
