BELLA VISTA September 2013

Bulletin

Official Publication of the Bella Vista Homeowners Association

Board Report The Board met on August 7, and minutes will be posted to the Bella Vista website (www.bellavista-hoa.com/bellavista/ home.asp) after Board approval in September. Limited Annexation – The City Council held up annexation to resolve some issues that are still-undisclosed at this time, so the planned petition signing drive was postponed. We’ll update you through the community Facebook page (www.facebook. com/groups/60243129318/) when we know more. Self-Storage Facility – We have no update on this project and understand that the developer is working to resolve Travis County requirements pertaining to a dry stream bed that runs through the middle of Phase-1. Again, we’ll post updates on Facebook. Xeriscaping – The Board is working on a policy to conserve precious water resources. It will include rainwater collection with relaxed rules governing rain barrels, but you must still submit plans to the ACC for approval. Monthly Board meetings begin at 6pm at the RealManage office (10800 Pecan Park Blvd, Suite 100) on the first Wednesday of each month, and a notice will be posted on the Bella Vista website at least 3 days before the meeting. HAVE YOU HEARD? Maintenance – You may have noticed the new park bench and picnic table and the repainted trash can, a new bollard light by the pool, the removal of two dead red bud trees in the pool area, and other general maintenance. We’re still operating within budget, and several new maintenance and beautification items are being scheduled for later in the year, after the pool season, including some rock/gravel landscaping, new playscape mulch, tree lighting for the pool/parking area, Christmas decorations, and more. Bella Vista Keep Austin Nice…and Informed By Marisol Foster, NLJC Excuse me. Yep. Please? Uh-huh. Thank you. Check. Most would agree that in this competitive world, it’s essential for teens to know how to properly shake a hand, chew with their mouths closed, and just be plain nice. But in today’s evolving times, our teens are faced with even more on their plates as the list of social quandaries grows. Is it rude to keep your cell phone on the dinner table? How should you respond to a date request via text? Is it appropriate to post a medical update on Facebook? How do you handle someone invading your personal space at the gym? What’s the norm for a cab tip? Let’s just say the Emily Posts of the modern world aren’t running out of good writing material, and that’s a pretty good great thing. Even the newest of 20-something gurus who claim themselves to be the embodiment of old-world civilities — currently in style, thanks to “Downton Abbey” — feel obligated to tackle 21st-century etiquette conundrums. “There’s this idea in sociology that every generation rebels against its parents and makes friends with its grandparents’ generation,” says Brett McKay, founder the Art of Manliness. “You see that with Generation Y dressing like ‘Mad Men,’ and you see that with etiquette.” Watch out world, “nice” is taking over. As for Austin, the National League of Junior Cotillions – Travis County (NLJC) is dedicated to just that: injecting a little more “nice” into Austin. Through their modern Cotillion program, Directors, Courtney Duncan and Marisol Foster equip students with good manners AND the appropriate skills they need to navigate unfamiliar situations with confidence and grace. Being informed of the proper protocol may just be the deciding factor whether a student gets the scholarship, the job, or the promotion. In a recent New York Times article, 85% of large employers reported placing a greater value on the soft-skills - being nice and knowing how to work in a team - over the hard skills. These so-called soft skills are the same skills NLJC students practice with their peers every class. This practice leads to good habits, and these good habits in turn, lead to a healthy lifestyle. “Cotillion was a fun, learning experience for me that has had a big impact on my life. My favorite part of Cotillion as a student was getting the experience of formal dancing, dining and manners and applying it to everyday life,” says Matt Davis, a former Cotillion student. Matt isn’t an alone. Earlier this year, 245 Cotillion students enjoyed a Winter Ball, Winter Wonders in Tokyo, which included a five-course instructional dinner and celebratory ball at the end of the season. “Every year, we are amazed at the students’ transformations as they impress us with their best manners and moves on the dance floor,” says Foster. “Cotillion is our attempt to give teens the confidence they need to enjoy and feel comfortable in every social situation, both on and off the dance floor.” The lively conversations during Copyright © 2013 Peel, Inc.

the formal instructional dinner and echoes of laughter during the Snowball Dance Contest confirmed just that. The NLJC’s unique classes for middle school 6th, 7th and 8th grade students offer a comprehensive approach to essential social graces education: life skills, modern etiquette and dance. The Junior Cotillion program is offered at two locations: Barton Creek Country Club and the Lakeway Resort & Spa. The season consists of six instructional classes/dances, a Winter Ball, and a five-course instructional dinner for 7th and 8th graders. The curriculum covers a variety of topics including interviewing tips, body language, international & traveling courtesies, introductions, the art of conversation, personal presentation, body language, and electronic, sports, dating and dining etiquette. For those of you who don’t remember, while dining out, the napkin is left on the chair if you’re planning to return to the table, and placed on the table if you are leaving for good. In addition to life skills and etiquette instruction, a variety of dances are also taught: the Foxtrot, Waltz, Swing, Cha-Cha, Salsa, (Continued on Page 4)
