Hattiesburg Zoo hosts Zoo Lights Submitted Zoo Lights is back for five nights at Hattiesburg Zoo beginning this Friday evening. The public is invited to this family-friendly event as the Zoo is transformed into a winter wonderland on Dec. 16, 17, 18, 22 and 23 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Zoo Lights will have attractions for the whole family. Events for Zoo night include: a writing station for letters to Santa, story time with Mrs. Claus, train and carousel rides, holiday coloring sheets featuring zoo animals, a take home bag of reindeer food, and animal encounters. Each ticketed guest will receive a complimentary cup of hot cocoa and a holiday cookie. Adults over 21 have the option of mulled wine instead of cocoa. No holiday event would be complete without a special appearance of the big guy in the red suit. Parents will have the opportunity to take pictures of their children with Santa Claus every night at Zoo Lights. A few special treats are planned for cer-
tain nights of Zoo Lights. Tuba Christmas is slated for opening night entertainment on Dec. 16, featuring local musicians playing holiday favorites in a medley concert. The last two nights on Dec. 22- 23 of Zoo Lights will celebrate popular culture favorite Festivus, as seen on the sitcom Seinfeld. The

celebration will feature traditional Festivus events, such as Airing of Grievances and Feats of Strength. “We are delighted to celebrate the holidays at the Zoo and have everyone join us for a great time. With the addition of Tuba Christmas and Festivus, we have a few new components for our guests to enjoy,” said Rick Taylor, executive director for Hattiesburg Tourism and Convention Commissions. New this year is the holiday market highlighting local vendors. Vendors will offer a selection of handcrafted and Mississippimade gifts for purchase. Jennifer Clark with Emerge Events, who is coordinating the holiday market portion of Zoo Lights, is looking forward to this new marketplace addition. “The holiday market will be the perfect place to pick up last-minute gifts or to find a great present for those hard to buy for people. Vendors will be selling children’s books
and character merchandise, hand-painted glassware, jewelry, games, and blankets,” said Clark. Admission is $10 per person, children under 2 are free. YWCO 18th Annual “Victorian Christmas Tea” By Linda Cranford The hum of voices in conversation, and the occasional outbreak of laughter could be heard coming from the subtlety lit Tea Room of the YWCO Thursday afternoon, December 8, as over 40 ladies from all over the Laurel and Jones County area gathered for the 18th annual “Victorian Christmas Tea” hosted by the board members of the YWCO. The graceful Victorian Christmas Tea is reminiscent of an event which began in England around 1830, when one of Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting, Anna Marie Stanhope, known as the Duchess of Bedford, created the afternoon teatime. As the noon meal became skimpier, the Duchess would experience a “sinking feeling” by afternoon, and would have the servants sneak a pot of tea, a few breadstuffs, and cake to her room. Soon she began to invite friends to join her for an additional afternoon meal in her room at Belvoir Castle, and she adopted the European tea service format. The menu centered around small cakes, bread and butter sandwiches, assorted sweets, and, of course, tea.

Eighteen years ago, a group of Y Board members visited Windsor Court in New Orleans to learn how to properly serve a traditional English tea. Since then, the board members of the YWCO have invited ladies of Laurel and Jones County to join them for an afternoon “Victorian Christmas Tea,” which has become a tradition and one of the most popular activities during the Christmas season. The third and final course included chocolate covered strawberries, brownies, and red velvet cake.

Submitted The City of Hattiesburg and the Pine Belt Coalition on Homelessness invite the community to join them in remembering homeless individuals who died this year. A candlelight vigil to commemorate National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day will be held on Wednesday, December 21 at 5:15 p.m. at City Hall Civic Center Plaza (water fountain area). There’s a significant reason behind the date chosen to bring attention to the plight of the homeless; December 21 is the first day of winter and traditionally the coldest day of the year. “It’s very easy to become consumed with our own problems, and while they might
prove overwhelming at times, a lot of us have a place to call home, clean clothes on our backs, and food to eat. Some of the members of our community can’t say the same,” said Mayor Johnny DuPree. “It is my hope that people will pause and attend the vigil. The ceremony is a moment where we can reflect on those who have passed and renew our commitment towards helping a person or family within the community who need assistance getting back on their feet.” At the conclusion of the vigil, the Coalition will distribute toiletries.
