“Free State of Jones” author is first speaker for fall 2016 University Forum Submitted As fans of the best-selling book “The Free State of Jones: Mississippi’s Longest Civil War” eagerly await the June 24 release of its big screen adaptation, they can also look forward to comparing notes on both versions with its author, Victoria Bynum, at The University of Southern Mississippi. As the first speaker for the 2016-2017 University Forum series at USM, Bynum will present “The Free State of Jones: Legend, History, and Movie” on Sept. 13 in Bennett Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on the Hattiesburg campus. “In The Free State of Jones,” Bynum told the story of Newt Knight’s renegade band of soldiers and the guerrilla war they waged against the Confederacy. Rejecting the Confederate cause as a rich man’s war fought by poor white men, Knight and his Jones County Scouts evaded arrest for desertion, defied tax collectors and did what they could to support the Union. Bynum will discuss in her University Forum presentation the legacy of Knight’s insurrection and how it

shaped Southern (and southern Mississippi’s) history from the post-Civil War Reconstruction to the Civil Rights Movement to our present moment when the movie, starring Matthew McConaughey, is once again raising questions about Knight, the Civil War and race. The program will include a question and answer period and book signing. “We’re looking forward to having Dr. Bynum as our first speaker for the fall University Forum,” said Dr. Andrew Haley, director of University Forum and an associate professor of history at USM. “I encourage everyone to see the movie and then join us in September to learn the rest of the story.” Bynum is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at Texas State University in San Marcos. In addition to writing about the Free State of Jones, she is the author of several books that explore the lives of Southern dissenters, including families that opposed the South’s secession, free blacks who defied the color line and unruly women who upended stereotypes of Southern belles. University Forum, presented by the USM Honors College, is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.usm.edu/hc, like the “Southern Miss Forum” Facebook page, follow on Twitter at @USMForum or email [email protected].

Submitted Summer vacation means spending time outdoors and enjoying sunny skies. But not every day will be sunny and clear. For those banking on spending long summer days outside, rainy days can put a quick damper on those plans. However, poor weather doesn’t have to diminish all of the fun. The following are some go-to ideas that can keep summer vacationers happy even when the rain is falling. 1. Visit area museums. It’s probably been a while since you’ve looked at the sights in your hometown, and rainy summer days provide the perfect opportunity to take them in from a tourist’s perspective. If you are away from home when the rain starts to fall, inquire about any unique indoor activities the area has to offer. Hotel lobbies and concierge offices typically have lots of brochures advertising nearby activities. 2. Do a scavenger hunt. Make up clues and hide a prize to be discovered at the end of the hunt. Scavenger hunts can keep children or adults occupied until the rains subside. 3. Have an indoor campout. If weather

cancels your plans to camp out under the stars, pitch your tent indoors and camp under the ceiling. Tell scary stories and tinker with s’mores recipes to make your indoor camping seem more like the real thing. 4. Stock up on board games. Board games are the original boredom-busters. They’re portable, and they can quickly turn a rainy day into something much more tolerable. Up the ante and have winners from each game compete against one another in a game of a different type. 5. Head to the theater. Catch that summer action flick or curl up next to a sweetheart and watch the latest romantic comedy. Some movie theaters even offer discount tickets at certain times during the summer. 6. Don’t be afraid of the rain. Unless you’re a certain witch with a wicked streak, chances are you will not melt in the rain. Summer rain actually can be refreshing, so put on your rain jacket and enjoy a stroll or even find a way to have fun in the rain. It’s alright to get messy during a rainy day volleyball or football game. Just be sure to run inside the moment you see any lightning.

Even though you’re hurt and disappointed, don’t give up By Dr. Bill Myers “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” James 1:12. There’s not a single one of us who hasn’t or will not experience a storm in their life. It happens. But our loving Father assures us that He is with us each step of the way. Friends, the storms/trials can strengthen us if we will choose to keep our eyes on Jesus. Choosing to walk with God with a thankful heart when your world seems to be crashing in will bring rewards/blessings. “So do not throw away your confidence (faith); it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.” Hebrews 10:35-36. God is encouraging us to not give up when facing trials. We know it’s easy to be thankful when everything seems to be happy and going our way, but when storms hit, the “rubber meets the road” (reveals how strong we are in Jesus). This is why we need to spend time with our Heavenly Father, praising Him with a thankful heart and have His Word inside us so we won’t fall apart when attacked . . . but instead we will stand strong and survive the storm. “We know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Romans 5:34. When you look at the life of Joseph, son of Jacob, and the various trials he went through, you see that all these storms he faced were molding and strengthening him to be the second highest ruler in Egypt. What we go through is for a reason, and God can and will turn it around for good if we will allow. Yes, if we choose to follow and trust Jesus, He will use our experience of survival to bless others. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28. We learn more from our failures than we do from our wins. Every bad decision we have made in the past can be used as wisdom teaching so we don’t make the same bad decision again. Yes, we should learn from our mistakes and failures. And, God will use our painful past to help others. Dear friends, be of courage for your storms are only temporary! The sun will shine again, I promise. Just keep your eyes on Jesus who is interceding for you at this very moment.

We do our best to determine the cost of each item by the expense it takes to get the product from our warehouse to the shelf. Then when you get ready to check out, we add 10% for overhead and profit. That’s it! And it can add up to real savings on your grocery bill. Compare out receipt with the last grocery store you shopped and you’ll see the difference.

Cooling Rising temperatures tend to produce higher energy bills, as homeowners look to air conditioning to mitigate the effects of heat and humidity. While abandoning AC is an unrealistic idea for people living in especially warm climates, there are ways to make AC units more efficient. Routinely clean AC filters so they can operate at maximum efficiency, replacing old or worn down filters when necessary. Keep AC units off during the day when no one is home, using the unit’s programmable functions to turn the AC on roughly 30 minutes before you arrive home so the house is not a sweatbox. Lighting Cut lighting costs by replacing standard light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, which are more energy efficient and have longer life expectancies. When installing external lights on your home, install motion-detecting lights so you can safely get in and out of your house without having to keep a porch light burning for hours on end. When laying out rooms in your home, place lamps in corners where they will reflect light off of two walls, providing more bang for your lighting buck. Electronics Vampire power is a little known foe to homeowners. Electronics like televisions and computers consume energy even when they are not turned on. This is referred to as “vampire power.” Unplug electronics when they are not in use, or plug such devices into power strips that you can turn off when you aren’t home or when devices are not being used. Home ownership comes with many hidden costs, but homeowners can reduce their monthly energy bills in various ways.

Submitted Home ownership is expensive. First-time homeowners may experience some sticker shock when shopping for their first homes, and that awakening may only grow more rude when the first month’s mortgage payment and utility bills arrive in the mail. But owning a home still makes more sense for many people than does renting. In addition to the potential financial benefits of home ownership, many homeowners see their homes as points of pride that strengthen their families’ ties to their communities. And while the sticker shock of home ownership may never wear off, homeowners can take steps to cut costs around the house, most notably by employing a few strategies to reduce energy consumption.

Sideline View: Ole Miss picked third, MSU last in Birmingham News annual football report By Dale McKee The Birmingham News has come out with their 70th annual SEC football predictions. Surprise! Alabama was picked to win their third straight SEC championship. The Tide will down East champion Tennessee in the championship game, according to the sports information directors from all of the 14 schools. The only rule that went into the picks was directors could not vote for their own team. Bama was picked to win the Western Division with five first place votes and one second. LSU was picked second, followed by Ole Miss at third. Auburn and Arkansas were tied for fourth with Texas A&M sixth, and MSU finished seventh in the poll. The Eastern Division finish began with Tennessee followed by Georgia, Florida, Missouri, South Carolina, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. The SID’s also picked an overall finish, with Alabama leading the way. The other picks from 2-14 were in this order: Tennessee, LSU, Georgia, Ole Miss, Florida, Auburn, Arkansas, MSU, Missouri, South Carolina, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. LSU says no & then yes to visiting bands The LSU Tigers halted visiting bands from performing at halftime last year. LSU said the restriction was due to security issues along the sidelines. The University sent out a press release this week stating, “It is important that we’re able to share the field with our colleagues who want to experience the unique atmosphere that is Tiger Stadium.” I can attest to that unique experience. It is one of the best venues in college football. All three Mississippi schools will be heading to Tiger Stadium this fall. MSU goes on Sept. 17, while USM and Ole Miss will be backto-back opponents on Oct. 15 and Oct. 22, respectively. Steve McNair joins Tennessee HoF

Mount Olive native Steve McNair was inducted posthumously into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame this past Saturday night. His son Tyler accepted the honor on behalf of his father. McNair, the number three pick in the 1995 NFL draft out of Alcorn State, played with the Houston Oilers and Tennessee Titans from 1995-2005. He played his final two seasons in Baltimore with the Ravens. McNair led the Titans to the Super Bowl in 2000. McNair threw for 31,304 yards and 174 touchdowns, plus added 3,590 yards on the ground and ran for 37 scores. He lost his life on July 4, 2009. Deuce joins Saints Radio Former Ole Miss Rebel and New Orleans Saints running back Deuce McAllister has been hired as the new color analyst for the New Orleans Saints. Cox hits Lottery Did you see the contract that former MSU Bulldog Fletcher Cox signed? The Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle inked a $103 million deal over six years. The contract is the highest ever in NFL history for a non-quarterback. The Yazoo City native was the Eagles’ first round draft pick in 2012 and 12th overall. Last year Cox, who had 104 tackles and registered 9 ½ sacks, was named to the Pro Bowl. Cleveland this one’s for you The Cleveland Cavaliers won their first NBA title with a 93-89 win over Golden State. The Cavs become the first team to overcome a 3-1 championship series deficit to win the title. The win was the first for the city of Cleveland, which had not won a sports championship since the 1964 Cleveland Browns. Cleveland’s LeBron James, won his third championship following a pair of titles in 2012 and 2013 with Miami. James led both teams in scoring, rebounding and assists in the series. The defending champion Warriors historic season began 24-0 and ended with a NBA record 73 wins. Contact Dale at [email protected]

Easley retires as JCJC tennis coach By Shawn Wansley JCJC Sports Information Director One of the top coaches in the MACJC has announced his retirement. After 17 years, Mark Easley will retire as tennis coach at Jones County Junior College effective June 30 to concentrate solely on his position as Dean of Students Affairs. Easley said the move away from the tennis courts has been in the works for a year. “I had the opportunity to move into the Student Affairs office last July,” he said. “That was too good of an opportunity to pass up. I really hated to give up tennis, but in talking with (JCJC President) Dr. (Jesse) Smith, he allowed me to coach them one more year. We had a large number of new players coming in and I really wanted to help with the transition there. It’s going to be a different part of the campus I’m involved with, but this past year in Student Affairs went well.” Easley said he relied on the previous Dean of Student Affairs – Dr. Sam Jones – during his first year in his new position. “Dr. Jones was promoted to vice president of Student Affairs,” Easley said. “He was a good sounding board and resource for me on any questions I had. The past year went well and I’m looking forward to being able to deal with that full-time now.” Easley’s tennis coaching record at JCJC has been impressive. Overall, he is 355-145 (71 percent) with a 188-59 (76 percent) record on the women’s side and a 167-86 mark on the men’s side. That includes four MACJC and two Region 23 Tournament titles on the women’s side, along with 11 women’s and six men’s national tournament appearances. “I am sure going to miss the tennis part of it after doing it for 17 years,” he said. “I’ve been coaching something – tennis, baseball, basketball, soccer, softball – since I got out of college 29 years ago. So, that’s going to be different.” Easley’s teams went out on a high note in 2016. The Lady Bobcats were 14-1, finished second in the MACJC/Region 23 Tournament and finished 18th in nationals in Tyler, Texas, while the men’s team was 11-

5, finished third in the MACJC/Region 23 Tournament and finished 21st in nationals in Plano, Texas. “I am glad Dr. Smith allowed me to coach one more year,” he said. “We had a great group – really every group we have had has been good. The last few days, I’ve been going over the names of players that have been here for the past 17 years and I can remember something about every one of those players from all of those teams. It’s been a good journey, for sure.” Easley coached soccer and tennis at JCJC for his first seven years before concentrating on just tennis. Prior to coming to Jones, he coached basketball and softball at Northeast Jones High School. He coached basketball at Neshoba Central High School in Philadelphia before going to NEJ. Easley remembers his first season with the Bobcats. “I started in the fall of 1999 and I really did not know many of the players because they had already been recruited and the team was fairly well set,” he said. “I started basically ‘cold turkey’ and then I went through each year with the recruiting and playing and all of the times we had together with each group.” Easley notes the area where JCJC plays its home matches at the Howard Sports Complex has changed dramatically since 1999. “The courts were fairly new when I got here,” he said. “But we only had the track, the field, the tennis courts and the tennis building down there. We played soccer down there for a couple of years before the stadium was built and football moved there (2003). The whole look on the South end of campus changed. That entire area – with the improvements of the baseball and softball fields – looks great,” he said. “We just really have top-notch facilities here at Jones and the tennis courts are a part of that. We have some of the best on-campus courts in the state and that’s a credit to the administration back in the mid-90s for building those. “A lot of schools across the state have upgraded their tennis facilities and I think it’s because they were trying to keep up with the Jones’s,” he continued. Easley will still be keeping up with the Bobcat ten-
