Weekly Focus: At the beginning of December we made our final delivery of donations to the Urban Family Ministries Christmas Shoppe. It was a joy to see all of the gifts piled up in their office, all waiting to be sorted, priced and then purchased by the families they serve in the Baxter neighborhood. The staff of UFM was overwhelmed with gratitude at the generosity shown in the gifts donated. This year a few staff members from our Mercy & Hospitality Ministry visited the Shoppe to help wrap gifts for shoppers. One particular shopper left quite the impact when she sat and shared which of her family members were going to be the recipients of what she had bought – the Barbie doll, coloring books, socks, and scarves. The joy on her face as she expressed her thankfulness was unforgettable.

Then imagine their surprise when she took their hands and prayed God’s blessings on both them and Calvary Church, thanking God for the blessing of being able to give gifts to her family, and expressing gratitude for their help with wrapping them. She continued and prayed for all of the homeless and hurting in her neighborhood, for safe travels for our staff as they headed back to work, and finished with a loud “Amen!” Our staff members went with the intent of serving and helping the staff of UFM and their clients, but were in turn blessed themselves. Mercy & Hospitality is a fairly new ministry at Calvary led by pastoral staff member, Lee Content, geared toward giving the congregation opportunities to be the hands and feet of Christ in our own community and around the world.
