Sharon Kloss receives St. Francis Award The Franciscan Sisters hosted their annual Employee Appreciation event at St. Francis Convent February 5. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Saint Francis Award. The Franciscan Sisters’ Values Committee sponsors this annual award, given to an employee who lives and extends the values of Saint Francis of Assisi and that of the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls. Amy Scholl, Human Resources director, said, “Each year the employees and sisters nominate a person who manifests our Franciscan values—respect, open communication, hospitality and compassion—as they carry out their work with us. “The 2018 Francis Award recipient is Sharon Kloss, who began working for the Franciscan Sisters in 2002. Those who nominated Sharon for the award commented that she goes above and beyond, always giving 100% in getting the job done. She takes time to talk and listen to both coworkers and sisters. Sharon has a strong faith and is the right person to receive this award.” Congratulations, Sharon!

Rejoice and be glad! Dear friends, Ever since we decided to do a series on the Beatitudes, I’ve been singing the hymn Blest Are They. You know the one . . . “Blest are they, the poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of God.” The tune, the lyrics are beyond beautiful. You’ll find in this issue the first in Sister Jan Kilian’s series on the Beatitudes. Enjoy reading how the Franciscan community lives out the Beatitudes in today’s world. Blest are they? “Blest are we” is more appropriate for this spring issue of Our Journey, where you’ll find literally hundreds of names of people who support the mission and ministries of the Franciscan Sisters. Every person, every business, every organization is a blessing to us. Thank you for generously supporting our work and Franciscan way of life. The words of the refrain “Rejoice and be glad!” are fitting for this issue as well. We rejoice and are glad for your friendship, your love and your willingness to partner with us in joyfully living the gospel and reaching out to the poor and marginalized. Thank you! The New Year is also cause to celebrate. Sister Theodora Higgins turns 100 this month, joining six other Franciscan Sisters who have reached this milestone, four of them still living. We also celebrate the publishing of a book by Sister Elise Saggau on the history of our community from 1950-2018. It’s fascinating and a “must read.” And St. Francis Music Center and St. Francis Health & Wellness Center turn 40 this year! We have special events planned you won’t want to miss. Thank you for offering your gifts of time, talent and financial resources to the Franciscan Sisters. Indeed, blest are we . . . in countless ways. Gratefully,

For they shall see God Sister Jan Kilian

Jesus taught the Beatitudes in his Sermon on the Mount, according to the gospel of Matthew 5:1-12. Amanda Lampert, an employee here at the motherhouse, asked, “How do Franciscans live the Beatitudes?” How do you answer her question? Here are responses from folks willing to check their own lives in this mirror of Jesus teaching. Sister Betty Berger writes that her favorite Beatitude is blessed are the pure of heart for they shall see God. If we hold on to nothing and are distracted by nothing, we will be living and receiving the blessings of all the beatitudes. I see an awareness in my Franciscan community that we don’t always hunger and thirst for justice, that we are not always merciful. We may have some attachment to possessions, power or reputation and not be poor in spirit. However, Sister Betty sees we do strive to begin again daily, or maybe even every hour. We visit the sick and sorrowful and pray for them. We advocate for life for everyone and share what we have both materially and spiritually. We may be afraid of criticism, but we do stand up for the beliefs we hold in our hearts. The Beatitudes are always inviting us to ever more blessedness.

brothers and sisters coming from our hearts. Franciscan Associates Joe and Jean Krause see the Beatitudes as ways to be receptive to God’s grace offered us at every moment. Jean believes a statement regarding Franciscan ministry should include the words “radical” and “countercultural.” Living the Beatitudes in a radical way, (as Francis did) is so countercultural that it reveals racism, white privilege and hunger for money, control and power. Living the Beatitudes awakens us to disparity between our values and the values of Jesus. Specifics of how we make the effort to live them is not as important as is our receptivity to grace—with open hearts longing and aching for God is the way to live the Beatitudes.

Associate Vicky Phillips finds the call of the Beatitudes present in her profession as a nurse. “My prayer each day is that my heart and hands may sense those who need God’s care extended to them, whether the patients and families I am involved with or my coworkers I work side by side with,” she said. Vicky and her husband Shawn use The Message, a Bible which gives them new life with its translation of the Beatitudes. The summary is direct and personal in this version: “Let me tell you why you are here,” and then a plan of action is laid out in Matthew, Chapter 5. The Beatitudes from The Message are Shawn’s primary scripture in his ministry in prisons, treatment centers and with those grieving. “You’re blessed when you get your inside world—your mind and heart—put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.” Pope Francis says in “The Call to Holiness” that the Bible uses the heart to describe our real intentions; the things we truly seek and desire come from our hearts, not our heads. “Blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God,” reminds us that God expects a commitment to our

Sister Theodora Higgins celebrates 100 years Janet Marian Higgins was born March 27, 1919, in Cobbs Hospital, St. Paul, the first and only child of Eben Higgins and Marian (Corser) Higgins. Her mother Marian was an artist who specialized in the delicate art of china painting. Her father Eben worked at Montgomery Ward. In her youth, Janet was known for her sense of adventure and identified as a tomboy, often playing with the boys of the neighborhood. At Groveland Park Grade School, she excelled in art, literature and science. She tells the story that in 1927, when she was about 8 years old, a woman named Gladys Gray came to work for the Higgins family because the mother was not well. Gray had a friend who had a friend who had attended the wedding of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Through this connection, Gray had received a small piece of the Lindbergh wedding cake, which she shared with little Janet. By that time the piece was approximately the size of a fingernail. Janet became famous around the neighborhood as she showed the other kids her “piece of Charles Lindbergh’s wedding cake.” Lindbergh was Janet’s hero. Janet attended Durham Hall with the Sisters of St. Joseph, but had to quit after ninth grade because of her mother’s illness. She then cared for her mother, who died in 1939 when Janet was just 20 years old. By then, she was responsible for running the household, which included her father, grandfather and uncle. Although Janet was raised as a Methodist, after her mother’s death she started to explore other churches. Eventually she felt called to Roman Catholicism. At 23, she became a Catholic and a parishioner of St. Mark’s Church in St. Paul. She soon began to seek ways to live her life more devoutly. Janet’s friend Helen Hofman recommended a visit to Little Falls, where Hofman’s aunt, Sister Mary Anastasia Ohmann, was the mother general of the Franciscan Sisters. Five months later, the young convert entered the congregation. She was formally received into

the novitiate on August 12, 1944, and given the name Sister Mary Theodora, a name she cherished because, in Greek, it means “gift of God.” After her profession, Sister Theodora worked for a short time in the convent laundry but was soon sent to the St. Cloud Children’s Home. Here she spent two years, before beginning a two-year stint as a prefect at St. Francis High School in Little Falls. She then returned to the Children’s Home and served in housekeeping and in the baby cottage. Six years later, she began a career in healthcare as a nurses’ aide at St. Otto’s Home in Little Falls, during which time she earned a certificate in geriatrics from St. Thomas College in St. Paul. From 1963 to 1969, she was a physical therapy aide at St. James Home in Perham. In 1969, Sister Theodora returned to St. Francis Convent to help out as a receptionist, but was soon placed in charge of housekeeping. In 1983, she became a dietary aide in the motherhouse food service department, a position she held until her retirement in 2011. She was tasked with -Continued, Page 7

keeping the sisters’ dining room tidy. This pleased her, as she always loved things to be neat and clean. It also gave her many opportunities to assist older sisters as they picked up their meals. Over the years, Sister Theodora served in a number of capacities, caring for both old and young. Of all her responsibilities, she most enjoyed working with the elderly. No matter what her assigned duties, however, she always found time for her favorite hobby—exquisite crewel work— for which she created original designs. During the years when she was able, she often hosted a small sale before Christmas, featuring her own products. Her needlework was also used for community craft sales and as gifts. In 1986, Sister Carla Przybilla (then community minister) observed that Sister Theodora was always even-tempered and cheerful, seeing God’s providence in all the events of her life. Those whom she touched, whether the elderly in nursing homes, adolescents in high school, children at the Children’s Home, sister companions who lived and worked with her, or those who now care for her in her old age (and who affectionately call her “Teddy”), might all attest to Sister Carla’s description and be grateful that they had known, over the years, such a lovely person. Happy 100th birthday, Sister Theodora!

Catholic Charities’ Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen, Tex, began in 2014 when huge numbers of unaccompanied immigrant children began coming to the United States from Central America. Upon arrival at the center, the immigrant families receive hygiene products, a set of clothes and a snack bag. Next, they meet with a contracted travel agent, who takes care of registration and arranges for getting them to the city in the United States where the sponsor, who pays for their transportation, lives. Many sleep overnight and leave the next morning. Sister Gloria Haider moved to McAllen last October. She’s grateful to be volunteering at the Respite Center. She’s impressed with the staff who handles the administrative work and the commitment of the volunteers. Most of the time everything is well organized—except for the days when the center has around 450 people. “Then there is chaos of which we try to bring some order!” Sister Gloria said. “The people who come to the center are very grateful for our help. After a long journey, the center provides a short respite and meets some immediate needs. The newcomers leave happier, knowing they have been treated with respect.”

Love: our response to racism Associate Garry L. Dahl

When first asked by Sister Carol Schmit to be a participant in the Franciscan community’s inquiry into racism, I was excited and willing to do so. My wife JoAnn and I were tasked with engaging in conversation with an African American gentleman and his wife, who is white, with hopes of gaining insights into how race and racism has impacted their lives. I was also asked to share in written form my reflections on the encounter. Having had incredibly rich friendships and experiences with individuals and communities of color, and because I like to write, I felt suitably equipped for the task. However, the adage “you don’t know what you don’t know” has taken on greater meaning through this process. Understanding racism and engaging it up close and personal is a dauntingly complex and humbling challenge. Racism in America is a deeply embedded systemic dysfunction that favors those of us who are white. The reality and challenge of white privilege has come into clearer focus and my own complicity illuminated. Therefore, it is of utmost importance I/we seek to grow our understanding of racism by reading, engaging in conversation, listening with our hearts, viewing informative videos and praying always for an expanded capacity to respond with actionable transformative love.

8

2019 Spring Our Journey

The gentleman I engaged in conversation spoke of how in his family the consistent mantra was “to be successful we have to work harder, go the extra mile and be better than everyone else if we hope to find success. Being black and successful in our systemically biased culture requires great effort.” It seems to me that our culture demands that our black brothers and sisters demonstrate their worth while often failing to honor their inherent worth and dignity as children of God. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke at the Berlin wall in 1964 and said the following: “It is indeed an honor to be in this city, which stands as a symbol of the divisions of men on the face of the earth, for here on either side of the wall are God’s children and no man-made barrier can obliterate that fact. Whether it be East or West, men and women search for meaning, hope for fulfillment, yearn for faith in something beyond themselves, and cry desperately for love and community to support them in this pilgrim journey.” Our friend greatly admired Dr. King, who in the above statement reminds us of the indivisible nature of God’s love which no wall can impede. Our present political climate was also of great concern to our couple. It seems “making America great again” is not perceived as an inclusive invitation to shared greatness but a fear-based, trademarked slogan seeking to secure power and privilege while relegating transformative racial equality to the back of the bus. For persons of color, racism is an ever-present dynamic, which demands they be ever vigilant to prejudice, inequality, bigotry and systemic injustice. On this shared journey, we Franciscans are challenged to affirm loves capacity to “make all things new” and reaffirm “We shall overcome” for “Christ has overcome.” For us, love is and must always be our response to racism.

Clare, pure of heart Associate Geri Dietz

It was my delight to listen to Associate Mary Donnell’s favorite story about Saint Clare. Clare was a noblewoman who was about 12 years younger than Francis and loved to listen to him preach. She lived in an age when women were vigilantly guarded by their parents, especially if they were of a wealthy family. Clare chose not to take advantage of the benefits of the nobility and, instead of being served by others, she decided to serve the poor. On Palm Sunday, when she was only 18, Clare attended Mass and received a palm branch from the hand of the bishop. Usually the young women process in a line for the distribution of palms; but he went up to her and gave her a palm. Some think perhaps the bishop knew what was going to happen and this was his way of approving the plan. That night, Clare sneaked out of her home. Clare arrived at the Portiuncula during the night and found Francis and the brothers waiting for her in prayer before a candlelit altar. Francis cut Clare’s long hair in the form of a tonsure, the custom of cutting some or all of the hair on the scalp as a sign of humility or when adopting a religious commitment. Clare is considered with Francis as the founder of the Franciscan Second Order, the Poor Clares. Espousing the values of continual conversion, contemplation, poverty and humility, Clare lived a long life. Mary is committed to her faith, trusting God to lead her in everyday life. She volunteers as a companion with the elderly, makes rosaries for missions in Mexico, volunteers at the grade school as a “Prayer Buddy,” knits hats for the children in her classroom and is an active member of Koininia. Oh! Did I say she is employed and married, too? Whew! Mary feels a deep connection with Clare’s story. A cancer diagnosis resulted in many months of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. One of the consequences of her treatment was losing her hair. Daily she watched clumps, lumps and handfuls of hair fall as she brushed her hair. An Internet search on cancer and hair loss for women resulted in 81,600,000 entries. Still, she felt a certain solitude on how to deal with her circumstances. Mary was determined to trust God to lead her through this

Mary lives the gospel values with a Franciscan spirit.

whatever the outcome. She was reading a book, “Francis and Jesus” by Murray Bodo, OFM. In it, she pondered over how Clare willingly desired her hair cut. Clare, in her endeavor of embracing poverty and becoming a religious sister, willingly offered to free herself of her own hair. Mary saw Clare as an exemplar of inner beauty, significant simplicity, and a mentor of birthing a new spirituality for women who live the gospel values with a Franciscan spirit. Mary put aside her ego and welcomed the poverty and humble stance of living with cancer treatments. She once called her hair loss her battle scars. Later, a friend challenged her to celebrate her new way of living simply with herself. “Celebrate? Me? This?” Mary then went swimming. Lap after lap she swam without a cap and felt amazing. She treats this time in her life as a gift where she learned more about herself, Francis and Clare, and God. Mary says she is more joyful and positive, knowing she doesn’t have to waste time being preoccupied with things she cannot control. “It’s freeing! Really!” she said.

Partners in ministry, Greetings to you! We Franciscan Sisters got our start by begging. We needed funds to start our first hospital and initial ministries, and we went out begging. Sometimes support came in the form of much appreciated chickens or produce. As our mission expanded, so did your support. Years ago, there was a need for a hospital in Breckenridge. We launched the project, and people supported it and made it happen. When we wanted to establish a mission in Mexico, people responded. Today, that successful mission continues because of generous donors. Last summer, we presented specific needs for our elder sisters in Clare Residence and Angela Community . . . and the funding came. We asked, and you responded. To everyone listed in the pages that follow, to those who wish to remain anonymous and to all those who have supported us in the past, thank you! Thank you for walking with us in ministry and with those on the margins who need our love. My sisters and I hold you in grateful prayer every day. Again, thank you! Peace and all good, Sister Carol Schmit Community Minister

Together in mission, together in ministry Sister Cordy Korkowski, director of Donor Relations While attending the National Catholic Development Conference in Chicago last fall, I heard this quote from Henri Nouwen’s writings, “Donors want to help you grow your mission.” I always believed this concept, but hearing it in the keynote presentation affirmed it once again. It warmed my heart that this Dutch theologian, author of The Spirituality of Fundraising, was held in such high esteem. As I began my article for this spring issue, where so many friends, family and partners in ministry are named, I reflected on the content of the development conference. It’s true, our donors certainly help us grow our mission. Your gifts bring sustainability to our ministries and make our work, our mission, our way of life possible. As you know, we have a variety of ways we seek donations and support for our ministries. With each issue of Our Journey, I look forward to putting my thanks to you in writing. These last months, the work of development held many exciting moments. Our August appeal, which focused on the needs of our elder sisters, was an awesome success. Our donors found this appeal especially meaningful and donated $57,000. Thank you! In September, I had the honor of inviting 13 donors to secure a matching grant of $27,000 for our Give to the Max efforts. It was done in a jiffy, and that core group of donors was happy to respond. The day of the event, November 15, I stayed up until midnight to “watch the returns come in.” When all was said and done, we raised over $74,000 for our ministries. Thank you!

Sisters Marguerite Ostendorf and Cordy Korkowski open mail on a busy December morning.

Finally, our Christmas giving, including responses to our annual Christmas appeal and other donations sent in honor of Jesus’ birth, brought in gifts of over $248,600 from donors across the country. We received hundreds of gifts in December alone, many accompanied by prayer requests. In January, a blessing for these special prayer intentions was part of the liturgy. Be assured the sisters will continue to pray for all donors throughout the year.

To each and every one, thank you for helping us grow our mission! 12

I (Lisa) donate to the Franciscan Sisters because two of the sisters were my teachers at St. Mary’s School in Morris. I have kept in touch with them through the years and enjoy visiting them in Little Falls. I was extremely impressed with the beautiful facility where everyone was so kind and welcoming and devoted to living faithfully. I saw the sisters spreading God’s love in many ways, and I want to help them continue to do this. — Lisa and Clayton Phipps, Brusett, Mont. Mary Fazio Dennis & Ardelle Feda Richard & Rita Feddema

Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, a saint for today Elizabeth Rydeen

Anyone who designates a planned gift and names the Franciscan Sisters as a beneficiary is automatically a member of the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Society. How fitting that years ago we chose Saint Elizabeth as our patron saint of planned giving. She was a royal woman who embraced the Franciscan values and dedicated her life to the poor. Elizabeth was born a princess in 1207 to Queen Gertrude and King Andreas of Hungary. She was beautiful and charming and, at an early age, recognized the differences between life in the royal court and that of serfs beyond the castle walls. She was married at age 14 to Ludwig of Thuringia. As a young bride, Elizabeth spent extensive time in prayer and refused to wear jewels and fancy dress. After the birth of her first child, Brother Roger, a Franciscan friar became Elizabeth’s spiritual director. She never met Francis in person, but learned the Franciscan way from the friars, who were impressed with Elizabeth’s simplicity and care of the poor. Elizabeth was keen to the hardships of the serfs and used her resources to alleviate their sufferings. During the floods of 1225, she used all of the food reserves from her husband’s territories to feed the starving. She also turned a building near the castle into a hospital, even taking some of the sickest into the castle to care for them. Ludwig approved, saying Elizabeth cared for the poor out of love for God. Ludwig died in 1226; three weeks later, their third child was born. These two events changed Elizabeth’s life completely. On Christmas Eve, during a snowstorm, she left the castle and sought refuge with the Franciscans. Life in the castle was incompatible with the life style she had chosen. She left of her own accord on the evening when Mary and Joseph sought shelter for the poor infant Jesus. Soon after, Elizabeth was received into the Secular Franciscan Order. She made a new home in Marburg, 14

where she built a hospital in honor of Saint Francis and personally cared for the poor. She continued this prayerful and charitable lifestyle until her death in 1231 at age 24. She was canonized a saint in 1235. Members of the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Society are remembered in daily Mass and the sisters’ prayers. Masses are offered periodically throughout the year and upon the death of each member. Other benefits include an invitation to Donor Day and substantial tax savings. If you have questions, please contact Sister Bernice Ebner, director of Planned Giving: 320-632-0699 or [email protected]. The Franciscan Sisters give thanks for all members of the St. Elizabeth of Hungary and hold them in prayer.

Sister Janice Wiechman leads the mission in San Rafael, Mexico, together with Sisters Ange Mayers and Mary Dumonceaux and several dedicated lay people. She’s involved in the education program at Casa Franciscana and parish ministry in the outlying villages. Parish ministry offers a wide variety of opportunities to serve others and respond to the needs of the community. One of her activities is visiting the sick, homebound and elders, especially in the mountain villages. Sister Janice accompanies Father Neri, and while he celebrates Mass, she makes home visits, which allows her to engage more parishioners. She meets not only the elder or sick person but also other members of the family who may need support. In addition to chatting and getting to know the families, she reads the Gospel for the following Sunday, offers prayer and brings Communion.

Sister Janice (seated-center) also responds to special requests. For a year and a half she’s been meeting monthly with three couples interested in the Associate Relationship. Here they are together planning a retreat.

t. Francis Health & Wellness

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS EST. 1979

Caitlin Lashbrook joined the staff at St. Francis Health and Wellness last fall. She’s been practicing yoga for 19 years and teaching since 2014. “I was drawn to yoga as a means to bring awareness and mindfulness to my everyday life. The practice allows me a different way—a better, calmer way—to be in the world,” she said. Caitlin’s chair yoga class is popular among seniors. The members all agree that she is the best thing about the class, but are quick to list improved balance and flexibility as benefits. Caitlin teaches an intentional connection between breath and movement. Yoga helps the members stay in tune with their own bodies and provides opportunity for socialization and friendship. Members of the chair yoga class. Seated: Alexia Cripps, Sister Mary Ann Capizzo, Cathy Wense, Shirley Ratz; standing: Sister Paula Pohlmann, Peggy Larsen, Sharon Miller, Sister Clara Stang, Susan Kleman, Oscar Kleman, Ken Klosowski, Caitlin Lashbrook (instructor).

Don’t spill the beans Elizabeth Rydeen

Galen Gruber likes growing things. Whenever he moves to a new place, he tries to plant some kind of garden, no matter how small. He learned about St. Clare Seed Library at the annual Green Fair Folk Festival and has been a patron for a couple years, borrowing and then returning seeds to the library. For librarian Elise Carey, the seed library comes full circle when someone borrows seeds and then brings the newly harvested seeds back in the fall for others to borrow the following spring. Elise was excited when Galen offered to donate an heirloom green bean seed handed down from his grandmother Loretta Petermeier. He made the gesture in honor of his mother Irene, herself a great gardener. As green beans go, this one is unique. It’s longer than the average bean, grows well in Minnesota and has a very nice flavor. By definition heirloom seeds come from open-pollinated plants that pass on similar characteristics and traits from the parent plant to the child plant, which is key to their survival. After the growing season, heirloom seeds can be collected and saved for planting the following year, and subsequent years to come. The term heirloom often refers to seeds that were being grown before WWII and passed on for generations. In the St. Clare Seed Library, we have a variety of heirloom seeds: pumpkin and various winter squash, tomatoes, peppers, beans, peas and melons, among others. This spring marks our third complete year housing a seed library. There are 31 patrons who regularly donate and/or borrow seeds, and 66 different types of seeds currently available.

Galen Gruber and Elise Carey in St. Clare Library. As a Christmas present, Galen gave a certificate from St. Clare Seed Library to his mother. She was touched, realizing that a part of her family’s history was being shared outside the family. “It’s a cool thing,” said Galen.

Libray hours: Tuesday – Thursday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Contact the Elise Carey directly at (320)632-0634 if you have any questions.

See you at the Green Fair Folk Festival, Wednesday, August 7, 4 – 8 p.m.

Silent Walk for Peace

The walk begins with prayer in the west parking lot of St. Francis Center and then proceeds through Little Falls, stopping at various places for reflection and song. Following the cross is a graphic reminder of some of the ways Jesus still suffers today and the necessity to pray for all people. Indoor Stations of the Cross will follow at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Chapel. For more information, contact the Franciscan Life Center at (320)632-0668 or [email protected]; www.fslf.org. 2019 Spring Our Journey

We initially started to donate to the Franciscan Sisters because Sister Cortona Bentler was my aunt. Over the years, when I started asking for prayers from the sisters for my Woodbury Construction Company, my prayers were answered 90% of the time. I depend on the prayers of the sisters…and it has been wonderful. — Jerry and Kim Guerin, Costa Mesa, Calif. We are very proud to live in a city where Franciscan Sisters are visible and active in the community. We like to donate because we believe they use our financial gifts wisely. When we come to the campus for Christmas Eve, for example, we are treated with gracious hospitality and sweet treats. We like to donate to the Franciscan Sisters because of the physical and spiritual help they provide. Many do not realize all the good that comes through the sisters. I love the peaceful campus and the great way the sisters use their buildings for the Music Center and Health and Wellness. Sister Pat Forster works for ARISE (A Resource In Serving Equality). This 32-year-old organization based along the U.S./Mexico border in Texas has a long history of providing services and advocacy for immigrants. Sister Pat (turquoise sweater) is pictured with staff members at the Muniz Center, one of four collaborating centers working to address education, health care, housing, civic engagement, leadership development and the needs of the youth in the small, underserved communities (colonias) in the Rio Grande Valley. Sister Pat was one of four sisters who founded the mission in San Rafael, Mexico, back in 2003. Her commitment to social justice and to the Latino people in search of a better life continues along the border. 1 0

In loving memory Sister Mary Hope Uphoff, 81 — Rose Mary Uphoff was born February 10, 1937,

to Alois and Louise (Laing) Uphoff in New Munich, Minn. She and her twin sister were six weeks premature. Rose Mary weighed only two and a half pounds, her sister about four pounds. However, Rose Mary’s twin died shortly after birth but little Rose Mary survived, sleeping that first night in a cotton-filled shoebox on the oven door. The next day the family bundled up and went to the church for the baptism. So frail and small, she was not expected to live. Her survival, without the benefit of incubator or oxygen, always made her feel a sense of destiny and purpose. Rose Mary attended St. Francis High School in Little Falls. She was a bit homesick at first, but quickly adjusted to boarding school life. She had an aunt who was a Benedictine and Rose Mary, herself, thought seriously about becoming a Poor Clare. However, probably because of February 10, 1937 – the example of the sisters at the high school, she chose to become a Franciscan Sister. She was January 2, 2019 accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls, Minnesota, on July 31, 1955, and was given the name, Sister Mary Hope. Sister Hope obtained her RN at St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, Breckenridge. She ministered as a staff nurse, head nurse, oncology nurse and night supervisor. She served in Sauk Centre, Alexandria, Moorhead, Little Falls and Hastings, Minn., and Milwaukee, Wis. After many years of hospital nursing, Sister Hope became the director of Nursing at St. Francis Convent Infirmary. She went on to minister to the elderly at Augustana Nursing Home in Hastings. When she celebrated her golden anniversary, she said her years were never static, but were years that moved her to new days of aliveness, appreciation and hopefulness. She loved to care for flowers and watch them unfold, reminding her of life and how each person unfolds and grows toward perfection.

Sister Mary Mercita Pipp, 94 — Frieda Alberta Pipp was born February 25, 1924,

in Draschitz, Austria. She was the only child of the late Urban and Mary (Tschurwald) Pipp. Frieda moved to the United States in 1940 and settled with family in Milwaukee, Wis. She attended Mercy High School and graduated in 1942. She became acquainted with the Franciscan Sisters while working at St. Anthony’s Hospital. She was especially close to Sister Magdalene Goldin. She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls, Minnesota, on August 12, 1943, and was given the name, Sister Mary Mercita. Sister Mercita obtained her RN at St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, Breckenridge. In 1959 she earned a BS in nursing, and in 1968, a master’s degree in nursing administration, both from Marquette University. She did further studies at Catholic University of America in February 25, 1924 Washington, D.C. She also was a certified Reiki Master. January 2, 2019 As an RN, Sister Mercita was a staff nurse, nursing supervisor, director of nursing and instructor. She also served in administration with her final health position being vice president of Trinity Memorial Hospital in Cudahy, Wis. She served in Breckenridge, Perham and Moorhead, Minn.; Milwaukee, Cudahy and South Milwaukee, Wis. In addition, she served as an assistant minister on the Community Board of the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls from 1980–1984. In 1967 Sister Mercita went to Cartagena, Colombia, South America as a member of Project HOPE. This was perhaps the most significant and satisfying experience of her long career in health care. She said, “Its (Project HOPE’s) philosophy reflected mine—people distinguished by giving themselves through performance and achievement who share the common interest of supporting the highest ideals, traditions and purposes.” After retiring from active health care ministry, Sister Mercita returned to Marquette and took courses in parish nursing and grief counseling, then served on the staff of St. Stephen’s Congregation in Milwaukee for several years. She was also a spiritual companion for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. She loved those years and found it difficult to leave Milwaukee where she spent most of her life. 26

Sister Eileen Kosel, 90 — Eileen Mary Kosel, the second of 10 children, was born to

the late Frank and Agnes (Slivnik) Kosel on August 5, 1928, in St. Cloud. As a young child, Eileen lived on a farm in St. Stephen, a small Slovenian community, then moved to St. Cloud, where she enrolled at St. Anthony’s School. Eileen was taught by Benedictine sisters, who were a great mystery to her. She always had a great respect for the sisters and priests who instilled in her a firm Catholic faith, reinforced at home by her parents. After grade school, Eileen attended Cathedral High School where she was again taught by Benedictine sisters. She remembered well the day that Sister Mary Eve Goering, a Franciscan Sister from Little Falls, came to Cathedral to speak about religious life. Sister Mary Eve was the first Franciscan Eileen had ever seen and she was very impressed by her. Eileen entered St. Francis August 5, 1928– Convent on September 1, 1946. She was accepted into the novitiate on August 12, 1947, and October 28, 2018 given the religious name Sister Mary Charles. She made her final vows on August 12, 1952. Sister Eileen was a registered medical records librarian and ministered at St. Gabriel’s Hospital, Little Falls; St. Michael’s Hospital, Sauk Centre; St. Joseph’s Hospital, Dodgeville, Wis.; and Trinity Memorial Hospital, Cudahy, Wis. She served as Community Secretary from 1976–1984. She also ministered as secretary, receptionist and clerical assistant in St. Cloud, Elk River and St. Paul. In 2001, she and Sister Mary Ellen Dinndorf moved to Albany. As Sister Mary Ellen’s health declined, Sister Eileen served as her caretaker, ever grateful for having had the opportunity to care for her friend in this special way. Celebrating her golden jubilee, she said, “I have not walked this journey alone. God has directed my life and sustained me with many graces and blessings. With a grateful heart and many happy memories I continue onward.”

Sister Mary Annella Bieniek, 93 — Clara Bieniek was born December 4, 1924, in Bowlus. She was the youngest of 11 children of the late Nick and Anna (Krych) Bieniek. She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls, Minnesota, on August 12, 1942, and given the name, Sister Mary Annella. She made her first profession of vows on August 12, 1944, and final vows on August 12, 1947. Sister Annella was certified in Red Cross home nursing and first aid, marriage/pastoral counseling and clinical pastoral education. She ministered as a housekeeper, cook, sacristan, dietary aide, activities and recreation coordinator and pastoral care associate. She was also a spiritual assistant to members of the Secular Franciscan Order, a much loved and treasured ministry. She served in Dodgeville, Milwaukee and South Milwaukee, Wis.; Wahpeton, N. Dak.; December 4, 1924 – Breckenridge, Moorhead, Perham, Parkers Prairie, Onamia, Morris, Little Falls and Marshall, October 21, 2018 Minn. Sister Annella was a wide-eyed, energetic person with a spirit of hospitality and compassion. A humble peace seemed to rule her heart and was spontaneously revealed in her compassionate and caring actions. Her prayer life and love for the gospel were hallmarks of her daily living. For many years, she was an active member of the Healing Light Prayer Community at St. Mary’s Parish, Little Falls. She enjoyed assisting the sick, dying and disabled as well as giving support to their families. When asked what she values the most, she replied, “I value scripture, the Eucharist, my Franciscan Community and my family, my Polish ancestry and living a simple, prayerful life.”

Associates Celia Nieman of Freedhem passed away February 3, 2019. She was a Franciscan Associate for 33 years. Celia and her husband Paul, who passed away in July 2018, were happy to be charter members of the Franciscan Associate Relationship. Celia participated in liturgies, fundraising, musical presentations and raising awareness of preserving our earth by the conservative use of water and other natural resources. Celia was a delight and a joy to be around. She once said, “Most of all, we feel the joy of all the people we gather with in associate activities, which enhances the presence of God’s goodness.” 2019 Spring Our Journey
