Bond Street Station Tunnelling Update

Duration of work

Since December 2013, BFK (BAM, Ferrovial & Kier) have been mobilising on the Bond Street western ticket hall to begin work on the tunnels and escalator barrels in the vicinity of the ticket hall box. BFK is responsible for constructing all the tunnels within the Bond Street station footprint. Tunnelling work is undertaken 24 hours a day, seven days a week for safety reasons. BFK has been enlarging the westbound running tunnel under Mayfair from 6metre diameter to the required size of 12metre diameter to accommodate the future construction of the platform which is nearing completion. The next phase of tunnelling enlargement will start in mid-April in the eastbound running tunnel. This work will start from Hanover Square and progress westward until its completion under Davies Street expected towards the end of June 2014. There are a series of escalator barrels and connecting passages between the two platform tunnels which will be used for access to the platforms. These connecting passages will be built using the sprayed concrete lining (SCL) method which is being used on the main tunnel enlargement. The construction of these tunnels will require us to break through a concrete headwall into the platform tunnels using breakers and this activity can be noisy and cause intermittent vibration. We will give you as much notice as possible about any noisy works and try to keep such activity within daytime working hours. The work on the escalator barrel and the connecting tunnels will start in midMay. The first activity that will need to be undertaken is to break through the perimeter wall of the western ticket hall and then continue excavating downward and eastward under Davies Street.

What to expect 

  

Deliveries of concrete and equipment to both ticket halls to facilitate sprayed concrete lining activity Vehicles removing excavated material Use of breakers during tunnelling works which may cause vibration Use of site lighting at night to support tunnelling activities

What we will do

In addition to the tunnelling works we have five grout shafts working in the Bond Street area and these are required to pump a cement like substance called ‘grout’ into the ground to protect the buildings from any potential settlement caused by the tunnelling works. The grout shafts have to operate while the tunnelling is taking place to protect the surrounding buildings. This requires the grout shafts to be in operation 24 hours a day when required.

In order to support these works there will be activity on the surface of the western ticket hall on a 24hr basis. The site will need to be illuminated at night so that the operatives can safely complete their tasks. In doing so, we will seek to minimise the impact of the site lighting on the surrounding community, as far as possible.

During these works we will be sending out email bulletins advising you of any potentially noisy works and if you would like to be included then please send your email address to - [email protected]

Tunnelling work is progressing and is expected to continue until the autumn 2014 Tunnelling work will continue 24 hours a day seven days a week for safety reasons Operation of grout shafts 24hrs a day when required

Ensure traffic management is in place to control traffic flow in and out of the sites Monitor dust, noise & vibration and keep within permitted levels Minimise lighting impact on local community at night Keep local residents and businesses informed of progress
