Celebrating 25 Years in business!

Hearing Care for Life

586-725-5380 How is your hearing? Is it hard to understand the people around you, especially in a group setting? Do you have difficulty hearing the TV or radio? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are not alone. Hearing Consultants of Southeast Michigan is here to get you the help you need. Kari Krause, audiologist and owner, will be celebrating her 25th year in private practice this October. She has been helping people with their hearing health care in Chesterfield, New Baltimore and the surrounding communities since graduating with her Master’s Degree in Audiology from CMU.

“I went into private practice because I did not feel I was able to give the attention patients needed and deserved in a busy medical setting,” Kari stated. “We are not just about selling hearing aids. We are here to help patients with all their hearing needs and to provide them a better quality of life.” Patients are given a hearing test and evaluated by one of their state licensed audiologists with either a masters or a doctorate degree. If there is hearing loss, patients are then fitted with hearing aids designed specifically for their hearing loss, their lifestyle and of course their budget. “Our audiologists work with the most current hearing

aid technology available,” Kari states. “Today’s hearing aids are quite discreet and have impro oved immensely in recent years. s. Many can connect to Bluetooth®-enable devices such as smartphones and TV’s. There are rechargeable models too.” Most importantly, Hearing Consultants of Southeast Consult MI wants you to know that hearing contributes to personal safety, emotional well-being and independence. Studies have linked the effects of untreated hearing loss to other health problems such as overall cognitive decline, an increased risk to dementia, and poorer balance and physical function. That’s why they are offering FREE HEARING SCREENINGS, so please call to schedule your appointment @ 586-725-5380. They are located at 30080 23 Mile Road in Chesterfield. OVERVIEW

Marine City’s Maritime Days Festival turns 40 Scores of events mark the big weekend, Aug. 2-4 By Jim Bloch For MediaNews Group

Marine City Maritime Days is celebrating its 40th birthday. Founded in 1979, the 2019 edition of the festival promises to be one of the most exciting yet. The central action of the three day party, Aug. 2-5, takes place along Water Street from Marine City’s public beach on the north end all the way south to the Holy Cross Catholic Church. Water Street hugs the mighty St. Clair River and the river provides a dramatic backdrop for the three day event. The festival blends a beer tent, local and regional music, fireworks and plenty of vendors along Water Street. Events include everything from the ridiculous to the sublime. On the ridiculous end of the continuum, look for Chicken Splat Bingo. “A chicken is unleashed on a board with a grid of numbers on it, and the number on which it poops, it’s the winning one,” according to the festival web-

Sunny weather and new additions to the festival drew crowds to Water Street to enjoy the 2018festival. site. “As simple as that. Games will be played in the beer tent at random times throughout the day/night.” On the sublime side, the second annual Gary Kohs Lighted Boat Parade is set for dusk, Saturday, Aug. 3. Jim Cottrell is organizing the event. Boaters who want to participate should begin lining up at 9:30 p.m. at Dunn’s Marina on Belle River. The parade will motor upriver from the mouth of the Belle to Marine City

Beach and back. Art of various sorts always plays a major role in Maritime Days. The Maritime Days annual Juried Arts and Crafts Show will be staged on the grounds of Marine City’s historic city hall at 300 Broadway, coordinated by Chris Finsterwald and Sarah Polio. The show will be held on Saturday and Sunday. There are also Do-ItYourself opportunities to

For kids growing up in the small towns of St. Clair County, nothing except Christmas stokes the anticipation and promises the fun of a summer festival. That’s especially true in Marine City, where Maritime Days is turning 40, old enough to have a passel of its own offspring. Almost everything at the festival — with the exception of the beer tent — is staged with children and teens in mind. The Kids Demolition Derby promises a special breed of hectic fun. Youngsters will drive 12-volt mini-cars, but the only things that will be demolished are balloons. “Each car will receive two balloons,” according to the festival website. “One will be taped on the front and one on the back. Registration begins at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 3, and the event is free. The contest runs 10 a.m.-noon. Prizes will be awarded immediately after the close of the tourney. The grand prize is a new bicycle. First prize for boys and girls is a new fishing rod. One contestant will be chosen at random and will win a guided fishing trip with Hook One Charters. DIY art projects abound. Kids may try their hand at painting on nature’s smooth, orb-shaped canvases known as beach stones. “We have the paint and the brushes!” says the festival website. “Come spend the afternoon with us painting rocks to leave all over town! Bring some rocks, paint them and leave them with us. We’ll hide them in town after the festival or you can take them home.” The sidewalk chalk art contest, Saturday, Aug. 3, 1-4 p.m., is open to people of all ages, including kids. Prizes will be awarded.

“Bring your chalk and ideas,” advise organizers. Registration is at festival headquarters by the beer tent. There will be plenty of opportunities for young people to root on their favorite contestants in the four queen contests, which range in age from babies to high school seniors. Dozens upon dozens of kids will march in the 2019 Maritime Days Grand Parade, to be held on Sunday, August 4 at 2 p.m. — scout troops, marching bands, martial arts squads and the queens from various other festivals. FESTIVAL PAGEANTS

Four queens to be crowned at Marine City Maritime Days Fundraisers determine Miss Maritime Days, Junior, Little Miss and Baby title By Jim Bloch For MediaNews Group

For the 40th anniversary of Marine City Maritime Days, the festival will crown four queens. Miss Maritime Days is open to young women who are in 11th or 12th grades. Junior Miss Maritime Days will crown a queen in sixth through 10th grade. Little Miss Maritime Days is open

to girls in K-fifth grade. The baby queen must be under one year of age. The crowning of the queens will take place as part of the Opening Ceremonies, set for the Festival Stage, 6-6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2. Karly Rose Merrill and Madison Fullington are vying for 2019 Maritime Queen. Junior Miss Maritime Queen contestants are Savanna Dawn Lynch, Jaelin Johnson, Jazmyne Kay Schulte and Maranda Sue Schulte. 2019 Lil’ Miss Maritime contestants are Bailey Steward, Juliette Desrosiers and Payten Danneels.

Adalyn Marie Lynch is the only contestant in the baby contest. Instead of a talent or beauty contest, winners are selected based upon how much money they can raise. The girl who raises the most money wins. The money raised is divided between the contestants and the festival. The queens typically receive $1,000; runners up, $500; second place finishers, $250; all other contestants, $50. Most of the festival’s share of the proceeds is poured back into the contest, repairing f loats or constructing new f loats and other expenses related

to the competition. Last year, Riverview East High constructed two new floats for the Maritime royalty. All the queens and first runners up ride on one float and the second runners up and the courts will ride the second. Miss Maritime Days is likely to participate in the parades of other summer festivals in the area, such as Bay Rama, the Algonac Pickerel Tournament, the Yale Bologna Festival and Richmond Good Old Days. Look for queens from those festivals in the big parade on Sunday at 2 p.m. Votes for queen are 25 cents each and voting boxes are located at: the Corner Grocery, Dairy Queen, Marine City Grill, Alyssa Crampton, 2017Miss Maritime Days, crowned the Marathon Gas Station and winners and runners up in the 2018Little Miss Maritime Days contest. FESTIVAL ORGANIZERS

Marine City Festival, Inc. is the nonprofit group behind Maritime Days Goal is to boost the community through tourism and wholesome fun By Jim Bloch For MediaNews Group

Who provides the engine that makes the fun-machine known as Maritime Days run? The first Maritime Days festival appeared on the scene in 1979. Three years later, Marine City Festival, Inc. was formed to produce the event. The main goal of the festival is to attract attention and visitors to Marine City and the surrounding townships. MCF, Inc. works at linking area businesses to visitors as well as promoting the local art and music scene. The organization is staffed by volunteers. MCF, Inc. is a 501(c)(3)

nonprofit organization, which means donations to the festival are tax deductible. MCF officers include president Dawn Campbell, vice president Michelle Hupcik and treasurer Gisela Horn, according to the festival website maritimedays.net. The organization has three directors: Darrell Campbell, Rick Hupcik and Matt Horn. “Mostly, the money we raise goes back into the festival, such as the fireworks display or advertising,” said Michele Boren, who helped organize the 2018 edition of the festival. “Hopefully, as we get bigger and better, we’ll be able to support other things in the community.”
