Goalkeeper Pre-game Warm Up All keepers: • Roll/bowl to space and move (coach/partner) – collect and continue -random movement to begin body warm up • Ten volleys each into hands (with a coach/partner) • Goalkeeper rolls ball to coach/partner who strikes it back to their hands (10 each) • Goalkeeper shuffles from post to post. When GK reaches a post, serve ball to their hands (6 each with 1 coach/partner) • Balls served into air (from coach/partner’s hand) simulating crossed ball (3 to the right, 3 to the left) • Balls served on ground, goalkeeper must dive. (4 to the left, 4 to the right) • Coach/partner simulates a few breakaways but only goes half speed. The remainder of the warm up applies only to the starting GK and/or if only one GK is warming-up for the match: • Shots from the 18-yard box. Coach and back-up GKs (or team) alternate shooting from different angles, forcing the goalkeeper to use footwork across goal before saving the shot (6 to 10 from each side) • Cross balls from each sideline area (10 from each side) • More shots from the 18-yard line, yet shots now are an attempt to score, forcing the goalkeeper to make more difficult saves (team) • Play one touch with the feet (coach/partner is now at midfield – GK plus 2 others) - on every third pass, the goalkeeper kicks a long clearance ball/pass to midfield • Goalkeeper takes a few goal kicks and punts into own net - It is important that the coach pulls the starter from the shooting exercise after a big-time save, thus sending the goalkeeper into the game with the utmost confidence. - This warm up is designed to involve the goalkeeper in many techniques that simulate game-like situations. - The total time of the warm up should be no more than 30 minutes, so the exercises are short but effective.
