Herschel Walker and Wesley Walls set to play in Sanderson Farms Championship Wednesday Pro-Am Submitted The Sanderson Farms Championship is pleased to announce that two distinguished professional athletes, Herschel Walker and Wesley Walls, have committed to play in the Allen Exploration Pro-Am this year. The Allen Exploration Pro-Am will be held Wednesday, October 25, 2017 with a 7:30 a.m. tee time. Along with being a Heisman trophy winner, Herschel Walker has succeeded as an Olympic bobsledder, track and field athlete, mixed martial artist, businessman, and author. After graduating valedictorian of his high school class, Walker began his college football career at the University of Georgia, earning three consensus All-American honors before going on to play for the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings,

Philadelphia Eagles, and the New York Giants. Walker was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999. This is his second time playing in the Allen Exploration Pro-Am. Mississippi native and retired NFL tight end, Wesley Walls, started his career at the University of Mississippi where he earned All-American honors his senior year. Walls moved on to play for the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIV, the New Orleans Saints, the Carolina Panthers, and the Green Bay Packers. In 2004, he was elected into the College Football Hall of Fame, and was elected into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. Walker owns and operates the Savannah-based Renaissance Man International, and is most involved with the branch called Herschel’s Famous 34,

which sells prepared chicken and appetizers to restaurants. A portion of all profits from Herschel’s Famous 34 is donated to charity. As part of his charitable work, Walker also regularly gives motivational speeches at schools and events nationwide. Walls currently works as a real estate developer, and he serves as president and CEO of Delta Furniture Manufacturing. Active in the community, he endowed a football scholarship at Ole Miss. CEO and Chairman of the Board of Sanderson Farms, Joe F. Sanderson, Jr., said, “On behalf of Sanderson Farms, I want to thank these two men for all the charitable work they do, but especially in helping out the Friends of Children’s Hospital and the other statewide charities supported by the Championship.

We are honored to have these outstanding men playing in the Allen Exploration Pro-Am.” The 50th Sanderson Farms Championship is set for October 23-29, 2017 at The Country Club of Jackson, MS. The Sanderson Farms Championship is an annual stop on the PGA TOUR hosted by Century Club Charities, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to promote the game of golf for the benefit of charity. The tournament’s primary beneficiary is Friends of Children’s Hospital. The tournament has been part of the PGA TOUR schedule since 1968 and is now in its sixth year as a part of the FedExCup. Sanderson Farms (NASDAQ:SAFM), the nation’s third largest poultry producer based in Laurel, Miss., is the title sponsor.

The award was presented for achieving outstanding clinical outcomes for 12 consecutive months, including patient satisfaction higher than 92 percent and a wound healing rate of at least 91 percent in less than 31 median days. Submitted A firsthand account of the life of an undocumented immigrant in America is the topic for the next program in the fall 2017 University Forum series at The University of Southern Mississippi. Dan-el Padilla Peralta, a professor at Princeton University recognized as one of the country’s top classicists, will share his perspective on being an undocumented immigrant in America in his presentation, “Undocumented,” which forms his acclaimed book, Undocumented: A Dominican Boy’s Odyssey from a Homeless Shelter to the Ivy League. This program is set for Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus. Peralta’s family came to the U.S. in 1989 from the Dominican Republic. After the family’s temporary visa expired, his father returned to the Dominican Republic, but the rest of the family remained in New York, where Peralta’s mother raised

him as they moved from shelter to shelter until he enrolled at Princeton. He kept hidden his undocumented status until he shared his secret with the Wall Street Journal in 2006. Since then, he’s told his story to advance the discussion of immigrants’ roles in shaping modern America. “University Forum brings national debates to southern Mississippi,” said Dr. Andrew Haley, director of University Forum. “Whether you support the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program or you want to build a wall between Texas and Mexico, you will find Dan-el Padilla Peralta’s experiences as an undocumented immigrant growing up in New York forces you to think harder about the role of immigrants in the United States in the 21st century.” Presented by the Southern Miss Honors College, University Forum is free and open to the public. University Forum is also available for viewing at the Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach.

Submitted Due to the complex nature of chronic wounds, wound care treatment uses an interdisciplinary approach to wound management and healing. By using combined knowledge of all healthcare disciplines — from surgery to primary care —effective chronic wound care management can be provided. With this, wound care treatment calls for physicians who are specially trained. Local physician at South Central Regional Medical Center, Stacy Street, MD, General Surgeon, has achieved a national board certification for wound care management. Dr. Street, Medical Director of South Central Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, is a graduate of Marshall University School of Medicine and completed her residency at the Medical College of Georgia. She began practicing as a general surgeon in 2001 and previously served as a general surgeon at Laurel Surgery Clinic for 12 years. Dr. Street is Board Certified in general surgery and is a fellow of The American College of Surgeons. During her time as a general surgeon, her passion for wound care management grew and she took on a role as a full time wound care and hyperbaric medicine physician. Board certification in wound management is achieved only through a rigorous process by the American Board of Wound Management (ABWM). The goal of the ABWM is to establish and elevate the standard of care across the field of wound management. Currently, 3,700 individuals have achieved this accreditation, and only 5 physicians are in the state of Mississippi. Dr. Street stated, “The mission of our facility is to be wound healing experts: driving wound healing and prevention forward to help heal wounds and change lives. We are committed to advancing wound healing with our patients and in our community. Achieving Board Certification in Wound Management, is an honor and truly shows the dedication we have to healing our patients.” South Central Wound Care and Hyper-

Boxtumes can be as simple or elaborate as you’d like and they’re fun to make alone, with the kids or even for a group costume. With tens of millions of members around the world enjoying Amazon Prime’s unlimited fast, free shipping, the perfect boxtume is only one great idea away. For inspiration and simple how-to guides for creating your own boxtumes, like this cake boxtume, visit amazon.com/PrimeInsiderHalloween. Cake Boxtume Project courtesy of CraftyChica.com Supplies: • 4 large Amazon Prime boxes • Duct tape • Scissors or craft knife • White spray paint • White craft glue • 2 jumbo rolls of party streamers (white and another color of choice) • Brush on varnish • Paint brush • Confetti • Collage clay • Plastic tiara • Paper towel roll

Line up two boxes and tape short ends together to make the cake look like a slice. Stand boxes upright and open to desired size. Line up third box to make back of cake. Using scissors or a craft knife, cut away excess and tape to cake. Lay last box flat. Place cake on top and cut away excess. Cut hole big enough to fit over your head. Place cut piece on top of cake and

tape in place. Cut arm holes on each side, and secure all edges with tape. Spray paint entire base white. Cut white party streamers into 16-inch strips. Fold and fringe with scissors. Set cake on its side and add line of white glue along bottom edge. Attach one strip of paper fringe at a time, repeating to cover entire box. Use colored streamers to add “frosting layers.” Continue until entire cake is covered. Add extra ruffles up sides of cake to look like frosting, and use varnish to add confetti to sides of cake. Cut cardboard triangle and decorate with clay and confetti. Let dry and glue in place on top of cake. Add more clay “icing” around edges. Place plastic tiara around paper towel roll. Follow the design of the tiara with clay. Add confetti and centerpiece of choice. Tip: Wear white leggings or add a colorful tutu underneath.

Southern Miss offers unique online RN-BSN program for Mississippi nurses Submitted Registered Nurses (RNs) are essential for creating a healthier Mississippi and a healthier nation. For increased quality care, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) says one way to secure our state and nation’s health care is by increasing the number of nurses with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. To meet this need, The University of Southern Mississippi has created a unique, fully online BSN degree designed specifically for RNs and Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) students in Mississippi. RNs can complete the program in 3 semesters. “There are many innovative features in this RN-BSN program,” says Dr. Mary Coyne, RN-BSN Program Director and Professor of Nursing. These include: • RNs can work full-time while completing the degree in three semesters • ADN students can complete the degree in 4-5 semesters, with only clinical courses left to complete once students pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) • Courses are offered in 8 and 16 week intervals • Courses begin Fall, Spring or Summer • Scholarships are available This program offers unique opportunities to start the program throughout the year without waiting for a traditional semester to begin. “Our program offers rolling admission so students may start the program in 8-week intervals each semester,” said Dr. Tom Hutchinson, director of the Office of Online Learning. “We have created an academic bridge for ADN nurses and students connecting our Mississippi ADN programs and Southern Miss nursing programs,” said Coyne. “Our philosophy is that all learning is personal and each student can count on faculty mentoring them throughout the program.” Coyne says the Southern Miss program has an unprecedented 99% retention and graduation rate and offers students a bright future. Achieving a BSN is the sole academic portal of entry for graduate studies in nursing, creating numerous opportunities. “Many of our RN-BSN graduates have continued in graduate nursing education and are academically and financially-empowered nurses,” says Dr. Kathleen Masters, Interim Dean of the College of Nursing. Hutchinson says the program will start admitting students for the Spring 2018 semester. To learn about requirements and admission deadlines, visit https://online.usm.edu/undergrad/ online-nursing-rn-to-bsn-degree/. The University of Southern Mississippi offers 11 undergraduate degrees and twenty-one graduate programs fully online. Nothing Is Impossible for God! Nothing! By Dr. Bill Myers “God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.” Ephesians 3:20. Many Christians get discouraged waiting for their prayers to be answered, allowing doubt and fear to creep into their mind. A negative feeling of undeserved or unworthiness attacks many. Dear child of God, and yes, you are His child, your Heavenly Father loves you and truly desires to answer every prayer! He’s the God of miracles, answers, and open doors! What He does for others, He will do for us. We must believe and expect that He’ll come through at the right time! Some people feel they shouldn’t bother God, and He’s too busy to be concerned about small issues. Friends, He cares about every part of our lives. Many times God is waiting for us to take our hands off the situation so He can answer or provide our miracle. Trust means we choose to let go of the situation and give it to Him! Our human nature tells us we need to “fix” the problem, but trusting God means letting go, removing our hands from the problem, and having faith He will answer. “I lift up my eyes to the hills-where does my help come from? My help (answers) comes from the Lord, the Maker of Heaven and earth” Psalm 121:1-2. I’m so thankful for the stories in the Bible that encourage us to trust God. He’s a rescuer! When we focus our heart on Him with thankfulness, He will answer our prayers. Nothing, absolutely nothing, is too big for Him to handle for us. We may look at someone and say, “There is no way they will ever get saved.” But ALL things are possible with God! God sees the heart, not the outer surface! “Nothing is impossible with God” Luke 1:37. Let’s pray and speak this scripture all through our day to encourage our faith in God when all seems impossible. “A righteous man may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all.” Psalm 34:19. So, who is righteous? We are! We are the “righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.” Our Father gives us permission to approach His throne with confidence knowing He cares. We are NOT bothering Him! He welcomes His children with open arms. What do you need this morning? He’s waiting to hear from you! Remember, “Prayer changes everything!” “I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I WILL help you” Isaiah 41:13. Are you waiting for an answer? Don’t give up! Remember, His timing is perfect. Trusting God matures and strengthens us to be strong. “In the day of my trouble I will call to you, O Lord, for you will answer me” Psalm 86:7. He has never forsaken His children. Your needs are important to Him. He will not ignore you, I promise!

. . . Especially When There is No One Available to Fight It! The volunteer firefighting service is struggling nationwide, and in Jones County we have seen a decline in our number of volunteers. Oftentimes, only a few firefighters will show up during the day due to work and school schedules. This makes performing the VFD duties incredibly difficult, time consuming and laborious. Some VFD departments are better equipped with personnel as compared to others, but all have common ground in that the need for more volunteers is DIRE! The local Volunteer Fire Departments need many able-bodied and willing persons, men and women, to join a Jones County VFD near their home. Night-time personnel is a little more available than day-time, but overall, the turnout for calls has been lacking and we simply just need more volunteers. Our current need for volunteers is EXTREME, especially during the day time.

Please Consider Volunteering Today!

1. Place cookies in food processor and pulse to form fine crumbs. 2. In medium saucepan, melt 1/4 cup butter. Add cookie crumbs and stir over medium heat 5 minutes, or until toasted. Remove from heat. 3. To make caramel: Bring brown sugar and water to simmer. Cook about 10 minutes, or until color changes to dark amber. Do not stir, but watch closely. Stir in cranberry sauce and remaining butter. Return to simmer and continue stirring until well combined and thickened slightly, 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. 4. Press warm cookie crumbs in bottom of small serving glasses, such as clear shot glasses, espresso cups, small bowls or parfait glasses. Set aside. 5. In medium bowl, beat cream cheese and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Add pumpkin and continue mixing to combine. Gently fold in 6 ounces whipped topping. 6. To complete assembly, top crumbs with layers of cranberry caramel and pumpkin cream. Repeat layers, including crumbs, 2-3 times depending on glass size. Top each parfait with dollop of remaining whipped topping. Serve immediately or refrigerate up to 8 hours.

5 helpful ways to actively assist your community (Family Features) Social responsibility comes in all shapes and sizes, but ultimately it comes down to one common purpose: making the world a better place. From volunteering at local shelters and community centers to feeding those in need at your local food bank, there are countless ways to give back within your community. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 25 percent of people in the U.S. volunteered in 2015. However, studies on health and volunteering show that people who volunteer report feeling emotionally, mentally and physically better. If that’s not incentive enough, lending support to organizations in your community can often bring immediate and tangible results that give you a connection and sense of community. There are some programs that even enable people to make a difference by matching them with volunteer or funding opportunities. One example is the America’s Farmers Grow Communities

program, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. “It’s exciting to see communities strengthened by their residents,” said Angela Allen, program manager for the America’s Farmers Grow Communities program, which focuses on supporting local nonprofits in rural communities with the help of local farmers. “The good news is there are several simple and easy ways people can get involved in their communities and make a difference.” Volunteering. Nonprofit organizations rely on the support of loyal donors and volunteers to deliver on their missions to improve the communities they serve. Time and talent are among the most valuable gifts you can give a deserving cause. One of the greatest benefits of volunteering is the chance to put your energy and abilities to use for a cause you care about, whether it’s feeding the hungry, rescuing animals or some other cause that is close to your heart. Giving blood. There is an ongoing need

to replenish communities’ blood supplies, whether for medical uses or in the aftermath of a tragedy. Giving blood is fast, relatively painless and can save lives. Donating. Money doesn’t make the world go ‘round, or so the saying goes. However, it can make a difference when it comes to bettering the community. Nonprofit and community organizations rely on monetary contributions not only to fulfill their existing program needs, but also to expand those services to impact more people. Rather than a single, one-time gift, consider setting up an ongoing donation so your impact continues over time. Applying for funding opportunities. Another way to help your community thrive is by exploring avenues to create new funding opportunities for nonprofits. For example, the America’s Farmers Grow Communities program provides farmers an opportunity to help a nonprofit of their

choice. Eligible farmers can enroll in the program until Nov. 1 at GrowCommunities.com for a chance to direct a $2,500 donation to a local eligible nonprofit organization. Since 2010, the program has given more than $26 million to nonprofits, including food banks, emergency response organizations, youth agriculture programs and more. Paying it forward. Not every step you take in support of your community has to be a large one. In fact, the ripple effect of a series of smaller deeds can have a truly momentous impact. You can set the feel-good wheels in motion in your own community by simply thinking about a time when someone generously gave their own resources to benefit you and paying forward that kindness with a matching endeavor. You might let a frenzied mom go ahead of you in line at the grocery store or pay for a meal for the elderly couple behind you at the drive-thru.

(Family Features) When school is in session and just getting out the door is an accomplishment, having go-to routines can help make ordinary activities more exciting for the entire family. However, if you encounter resistance to everyday household tasks, you may just need a simple revamp to make activities more entertaining and engaging. Refresh your family routines with these ideas designed to create more willing participants: Trash duty No one likes taking out the trash, but with a nudge, even little helpers can find fun in this mundane chore. Ask for help sorting materials in the recycle bin for an educational chance to throw things without getting into trouble. Or try timing how long it takes to gather trash from the bedrooms or bathrooms, and set a goal to break that record next week. Personal care Getting kids to brush not once but twice a day can be an onerous endeavor, but making the activity silly may be just the answer. The “Silly Brushing Song” is a fun, interactive music video and tool for parents that Tom’s of Maine created in partnership with children’s singer and songwriter Laurie Berkner to help get kids brushing for a full two minutes, twice a day, as recommended by the American Dental Association. For a winning combination, add Tom’s of Maine Silly Strawberry toothpaste, the No. 1 natural children’s toothpaste according to SPINS, a provider of retail consumer insights for natural, organic and specialty products. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the toothpaste is made for kids ages 2-6 with natural ingredients including real strawberry extract and no artificial flavors, dyes or sweeteners. make all the difference in getting junior gardeners on board. So can setting small, attainable goals so they can celebrate a sense of accomplishment. Try designating a flower bed to get rid of leaves or a section of the yard that needs sticks removed. Be sure to demonstrate proper techniques and give frequent praise for a job well done. Clean-up time It’s no secret that kids can destroy a room in minutes, especially when it’s a room filled with their favorite toys. When it comes to cleaning up, all that mess can be overwhelming. Look for ways to make the chore more manageable, such as picking up all the cars and trucks first then the building blocks next, for example. Sing songs while you work to help make the time go faster. Pet care For many households, pets are not only beloved members of the family, they’re living, breathing lessons in responsibility. Once the novelty of a new animal wears off, however, so can the excitement of feeding and walking. A simple sticker chart can be a hands-on and effective way to remind kids that this is a chore that needs to be completed every single day. Plus, pet care can be a fun way to introduce children to the importance of responsibilities and becoming a “big kid.” For added fun, make your own stickers using funny photos of your family pets.
