Meet the JCJC Bobcats & see the Maroon Typhoon marching band’s glamorous show We have a very talented and focused group of students who have endured marching in a muddy practice field and practicing indoors to produce a spectacular show for everyone. Our recruiting efforts have really paid off because we have a great group of hardworking students!” said Dr. Burge. The show will feature a mix of “old school” favorites from Prince with modern hits from Lady Gaga. Visually, the color purple will be dominant on the field this year. That’s because singer-songwriter Prince’s hit songs from the 1984, number-one album and film, Purple Rain, will be featured.  The Maroon Typhoon will incorporate the film’s title song “Purple Rain” and others from the album like, “Doves Cry” and “I Would Die 4 U” and the song, “The Glamorous Life,” which Prince co-produced with Sheila E.  Add the glitzy Lady Gaga hits “Bad

Sophomore alto saxophone player, Sarah Conn of Roxie added, “A lot of students are really driven and talented this year. We’re all working really hard and that’s really exciting to see the show come together.” The music will be complimented by a talented color guard and dance team. JCJC Touch of Gold co-captain Annie Heathcock of Hattiesburg explained why she’s excited about the dance team’s performance. “This group of dancers’ technique level is really high which makes our performance even better. Additionally, the costumes are by far my favorite thing about this show!”   Adding to the glitz and glamour, two

Romance” and “I Live for the Applause” and the audience will enjoy a perfect mix of modern and old-school glam and “jams.” “Playing two well-known artists’ hitsongs can be difficult to translate well on the football field,” said trumpet player from Seminary, Trent Norris. He further explained, “It’s a challenge to play Lady Gaga’s style, musically. We have to add a little extra so it sounds like her sound, for example.” The colorguard and Touch of Gold dance team’s costumes and props will capture the glamorous, fashion-forward image both musical artists exude. Dr. Burge describes the show as being avant-garde, fashion-forward and glamorous with a lot of talented, musicians and dancers. The whole show captures the glamorous life of two flamboyant artists. “Our costumes together with the mu-

By Teresa McCreery Jones County Junior College’s annual “Meet the Bobcats” event will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 29, at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field.  Bobcat fans will have the opportunity to meet the Bobcat football team, soccer teams, cheerleaders, Maroon Typhoon marching band and Touch of Gold dance team. The event is free and open to the public. JCJC Director of Bands Dr. Ben Burge said the August rain during band camp did not prevent the Maroon Typhoon marching band from preparing a sneak preview of this year’s show, “Glamorous Life.”  In fact, Dr. Burge said they are a little ahead of schedule. “I’m excited about this year even though practicing outdoors has been a challenge with the torrential, daily rain and humidity.

JCJC Director of Bands, Dr. Ben Burge who is returning for his second year at JCJC, and Assistant Band Director of four-years, Lindsey Keay, welcome new assistant band director, Kristopher Grant from Michigan, who last taught at East Mississippi Community College.  The JCJC Maroon Typhoon Marching Band also receives direction from high-brass instructor, Dr. Patrick Richards (7 years) and low-brass instructor, Dr. Mackenzie Edgley who joins the group from Tallahassee, Florida. This year’s show will also feature 26-year veteran colorguard instructor, Juna Broome and 25-year Touch of Gold instructor, Lora Davis. Photo/Teresa McCreery

JCJC’s Maroon Typhoon welcomes one new drum major from West Jones High School, John Harrison to the group of veteran field directors.  Pictured left to right are: Assistant drum major, Nathan Lucky from Meridian-West Lauderdale High School and John Harrison-West Jones-Laurel. Pictured in the front row are: Drum major and JCJC sophomore, Katelynn McGowen of South Jones-Ellisville and assistant drum major, JCJC sophomore and South Jones High School graduate, Jorge Castillo of Ellisville. Joining the student leaders have been a mix of new and knowledgeable professional directors. Dr. Burge recognizes both the color guard and dance team’s success can be attributed to the 26-year commitment to the JCJC flag-spinning group under the direction of Juna Broome and Lora Davis’ 25-years of leading and choreographing the Touch of Gold dance team. Together with Associate Director of Bands, Lindsey Keay in her fourth year, and Kristopher Grant as the new, Assistant Director of Bands along with, Dr. Patrick Richards, the high brass instructor and Dr. Mackenzie Edgley as the new low brass instructor, the Maroon Typhoon is able to produce a superb, modern half-time show rivaling any band in the South. The Maroon Typhoon band exhibition will be moved to the A.B. Howard gym if there is inclement weather. For more information about the Maroon Typhoon, contact the JCJC Fine Arts Office at: 601-477-4094.

DIY car care everyone can do (Family Features) While taking your car to an auto service professional is a great way to ensure its performance, the Car Care Council reminds vehicle owners there are few simple vehicle checks that they can easily learn and do themselves to save a little money and help keep their vehicles running efficiently all summer long. With basic knowledge of common maintenance practices and a little time, motorists can inspect the following components in their own driveway: * Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. * Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer fluid and antifreeze/coolant. * Check the hoses and belts as they can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system.

5

* Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and inspect and replace worn wiper blades. Keep the reservoir filled with windshield washer fluid. * To keep the cooling system working effectively, the coolant and distilled water mixture for a vehicle’s radiator should be 50:50. Never open a hot radiator cap when checking the coolant level in the reservoir. As a rule of thumb, the coolant should be changed annually on most vehicles. * Check the gas cap to ensure it is not damaged, loose or missing to prevent gas from spilling or evaporating. * Don’t neglect the exterior. When washing the outside, make sure to include the tires and wheels and the underside and fenders to eliminate any road salt or grime. The body of the vehicle should be washed using a product sold specifically for cars. Wax your vehicle every six months. To learn more about how to care for you vehicle, and for a free copy of the popular Car Care Guide, visit www.carcare.org.

Battle weeds, leaves and shrubbery with technology (Family Features) The same type of technology used in some of the United States Navy’s most powerful ships also powers handheld lawn equipment. A lineup of string trimmers, leaf blowers and hedge trimmers from Cub Cadet use an innovative technology to power the units called CORE (Conductor-Optimized Rotary Energy). The sophisticated motor technology generates power equal to gas engines and maximizes pound-forpound power efficiency, compared to its 25 cubic centimeter gas-powered engines. The technology also features a unique Power-Lok system. This standalone drive unit offers lightweight, high-performance string trimmer, blower and hedge trimmer attachments. It saves storage space and money with one tool that does the job of three different units. Printed circuit board technology and magnetic rotors generate concentrated, efficient power and torque that is on par with gas-powered units so the toughest outdoor challenges can be tackled without the fill-ups, fumes or pull-starts of gas engines. By delivering high-torque performance with no dependence on battery voltage, CORE technology leverages a revolutionary motor design and a responsive load-sensing controller to deliver power and performance where and when it is needed. It also features zero gasoline emissions and much less noise than gas-powered equipment. Because the motor consists of lighter weight materials and does not require a gas tank, it is lighter for users to operate. With longer runtimes than other gasless tools, the technology offers all the power needed for various outdoor projects with nearly 45 minutes of power on one charge. The typical recharge time is 1 hour. More information is available at CubCadet.com.

drum majorettes will be twirling fiery batons and showing off their skills throughout the show.  Freshmen, Autumn Dunnaway from Vancleave and Carley Carpenter of Leroy, Alabama, will continue a recently revived tradition as feature twirlers for the Maroon Typhoon. Dunnaway performed with graduating feature twirler Sabrina Sagers of D’Iberville and is glad to be able to continue the tradition. “During pre-game we really get to show-off our skills together,” said Dunnaway.  Carpenter added, “Alabama junior colleges don’t have bands, but I didn’t want to go to a university.  I’m glad Jones offered this opportunity to continue doing what I love.” Drum majors returning from last year include super-sophomore from Meridian, Nathan Lucky, sophomores from Ellisville, Katelynn McGowen and Jorge Castillo, and joining the group this year is freshmen John Harrison from Laurel. Harrison was the drum major at West Jones High School for three years and was selected as the “backup” drum major for the prestigious Lions All-State Band this past summer.  He joins an experienced South Jones High School team of leaders in McGowen and Castillo, and Lucky’s two years as a JCJC drum major. “Band camp has been challenging but a rewarding time because all of the JCJC drum majors are talented conductors and mace spinners. It has truly been a worthwhile experience,” said Harrison.

Bus safety tips for back-to-school A Safe Transportation Option Beyond teaching safety precautions around the bus, there is another option to ensure kids are transported safely to and from school each day. Many school districts are moving away from noisy, pollution-inducing and expensive diesel buses in favor of buses powered by an alternate fuel, like propane, which offers numerous benefits for school districts and their students.

(Family Features) While school safety is of the utmost importance to parents, millions of school-age children begin and end their days with a bus ride. To provide some measures for parents to help increase safety going to and from the bus and during the ride, the National Association for Pupil Transportation offers these tips.

On the Bus Ride * When boarding the bus, items can get bumped and dropped. Caution children that before picking anything up, they should talk to the driver and follow instructions to safely retrieve their possessions. * Teach safe riding habits: stay seated with head, hands and feet inside at all times; use a seatbelt (if available); keep bags and books out of the aisle and remain seated until the bus stops moving. Also instruct children to never throw things on the bus or out the windows and to never play with or block the emergency exits.

_____________________________October 7

___________________________September 9

_____________________________August 29

Before the Bus Arrives * Ensure backpacks are packed securely so papers and other items don’t scatter as the bus approaches. * Create a morning routine that puts kids at the bus stop five minutes before the scheduled pickup time. This helps avoid a last-minute rush, when safety lessons are easily forgotten, and ensures kids are safely in place for boarding. * Encourage children to wear bright, contrasting colors so they can be seen easier by drivers. * Walk young children to the bus stop or encourage kids to walk in groups. There is safety in numbers; groups are easier for drivers to see. * Instruct children to walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, advise them to stay out of the street, walk singlefile, face traffic and stay as close to the edge of the road as possible. * If kids must cross a street, driveway or alley, remind them to stop and look both ways before crossing. * Verify that the bus stop location offers good visibility for the bus driver; if changes are needed, talk with nearby homeowners or school district officials to implement changes. Never let kids wait in a house or car, where the driver may miss seeing them approach the bus. * Remind children that the bus stop is not a playground. Balls or other toys can roll into the street and horseplay could result in falling into the path of oncoming traffic. * Instruct children to stay at least three steps away from the road and allow the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching it.

* Remind kids that yelling and other loud noises are off limits as they could distract the driver. * If cell phones and other electronic devices are permitted, instruct children to mute the sound or use headphones so as not to create a distraction for the driver or other riders. Leaving the Bus * Remind children to look before stepping off the bus. If they must cross the street, teach them to do so in front of the bus by taking five big steps from the front of the bus, making eye contact with the driver and waiting for the signal that it is safe to begin crossing. * For parents who meet their kids at the bus stop, remember that in their excitement kids may dart across the street. Eliminate the risk by waiting on the side of the street where kids exit the bus. * Make the bus ride part of your daily “how was school?” discussion. Encourage kids to talk about the things they see and hear on the bus so you can discuss appropriate behaviors and, if necessary, report any concerns to school administrators. Discuss the Bus Join the discussion (or start one) on school districts exploring a switch from diesel buses to cleaner alternatives by downloading resources including fact sheets, videos and more at BetterOurBuses.com.

Safety: Jenna Bush Hager, a teacher, author, journalist and parent of two, has partnered with the Propane Education & Research Council to educate parents and school districts about the benefits of propane school buses. School buses powered by propane offer numerous safety advantages. Propane school buses are quieter than diesel buses when operating, making it easier for drivers to hear both inside and outside the bus. This can have a direct impact on student behavior, and many districts have reported fewer disciplinary issues as a result. An interactive audio quiz detailing the difference between the types of buses can be found at QuieterSchoolBuses.com. “As a former teacher, I know parents often overlook how the ride to and from school can impact a child’s performance in the classroom,” Hager said. “A child’s attitude or behavior before they arrive at school can set the tone for the whole day.” In addition, these buses meet rigorous U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and each is equipped with an automatic shut-off feature that prevents fuel flow to the engine when not running. Another safety consideration is the health implications of older diesel buses. The shorter height of younger students can put them face-to-face with a black cloud of diesel smoke every school day. With propane buses, however, students aren’t exposed to the harmful particulate matter in diesel exhaust, which is known to aggravate asthma and has been identified by the World Health Organization as a carcinogen. However, “low-NOx” propane engines are 75 percent cleaner than current federal emissions standards require. Savings: Not only is propane consistently less expensive than diesel fuel, the buses themselves don’t require the same expensive repairs and replacement parts that today’s modern diesel buses demand. Saving money on transportation costs puts schools in a better position to appropriate budget toward meeting students’ needs in the classroom and other areas, such as fine arts and athletic programs.

Oftentimes, only a few firefighters will show up during the day due to work and school schedules. This makes performing the VFD duties incredibly difficult, time consuming and laborious. Some VFD departments are better equipped with personnel as compared to others, but all have common ground in that the need for more volunteers is DIRE!

2011 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 145K Miles...........$18,950

The local Volunteer Fire Departments need many able-bodied and willing persons, men and women, to join a Jones County VFD near their home. Night-time personnel is a little more available than day-time, but overall, the turnout for calls has been lacking and we simply just need more volunteers. Our current need for volunteers is EXTREME, especially during the day time.
