CHORAL CALL “Once in Royal David’s City” (verse 3) “Jesus is our childhood’s pattern; day by day like us he grew; He was little, weak and helpless; tears and smiles like us he knew; And he feels for all our sadness, and he shares in all our gladness.”

CONFESSION

TC Anderson God of Wonder and Glory, we are reminded today of how different the kingdom of Jesus is from the kingdoms that humans build. We pity the poor and the oppressed. We look for visible signs of a kingdom of power and wealth. We assume that we are following your will when life is going well for us. Forgive our misunderstanding. Forgive our desire to protect our position and wealth at the expense of the poor. Forgive us when we fail to make a conscious choice each day to follow you and work for your kingdom. Restore our hearts so we are ready to receive you. Amen.

§ MUSICAL RESPONSE “Glory to God” “Glory to God, glory to God, glory in the highest! Glory to God, glory to God, alleluia, alleluia!”

§ PASSING THE PEACE One: The peace of Jesus Christ be with you. All: And also with you. One: Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

LUKE 3:7-16 ANTHEM

“I Hear the Prophet Callin’ ” Pepper Choplin “I hear the prophet callin’, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord.’ Come and make straight the way in the desert, a highway for our God. I hear Isaiah callin’, ‘Fear not, your God has came.’ Then will the eyes of the blind be opened. The ears of the deaf will hear. And then the mute will shout for joy. And the desert will be joyful and blossom as a rose. We shall rejoice with joy and singing and see the glory of God.” Chancel Choir; TC Anderson, guitar; Chris Urban, piano; Grace Carroll, Madison Treppa, Morgan Treppa, Katie Ryerson, voice; Adam Stanhope and John Treppa, percussion

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

#134 TC Anderson

LORD’S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

SHARING OUR GIFTS “Good King Wenceslaus” arr. Gordon Young “Good King Wenceslaus looked out on the feast of Stephen, when the snow lay round about, deep and crisp and even. Brightly shown the moon that night, though the frost was cruel, when a poor man came in sight, gathering winter fuel. Hither, page, and stand by me, If thou know it telling: yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling? Sire, he lives a good league hence, underneath the mountain, right against the forest fence, by Saint Agnes fountain. In his master's step he trod, where the snow lay dented. Heat was in the very sod which the saint had printed. Therefore, Christian men, be sure, wealth or rank possessing, ye who now will bless the poor shall yourselves find blessing.” Chancel Choir
