Meeting President Peter opened the meeting with a welcome to Sue Gardner and Graeme Meyers back from overseas travel, and Robin Paul, back from a month in the deep south (in a caravan). The low point in the evening was the announcement that Past President Iain is leaving us to take up the position of Operations Manager with N.Z. Yarns in Christchurch. The move came as a result of changes in Iain’s position in Wanganui. He will be starting in Christchurch on 6 September. Iain said that he was grateful for the opportunity to be associated with Rotary, and its members in Wanganui North. Immediate Past President Terry Coxon received a bound copy of Club Bulletins issued during his Presidency, together with a certificate in recognition of his service during 2015/16. The raffle was won this week by Garth. Mike filled in as sergeant, extracting contributions from the unwilling. Terry Coxon has agreed to act as Programme Co-ordinator for the administration connected with visiting speakers. Members were advised that responsibility for identifying speakers fell on them. The name of any likely speaker should be reported to Terry after he or she has agreed to speak. Sue, as Counsellor to our visiting Austrian Exchange Student, announced that Marielle would be speaking to the South Club at the RSA on Tuesday 16 August. Anyone wishing to attend should contact Graeme Carter Ph. 344 4764, before Midday on Monday 15th. No doubt talks to other clubs will follow.

From The Meeting President Peter expressed what he considered to be a lack of cultural diversity in club membership, and reported on the use of Te reo by other city clubs in their changeover functions. The subject was left for committees to discuss later in the evening. Jane would like names of volunteers for the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day on Friday 26 August. A collection point at the Unichem Pharmacy in Fitzherbert Avenue between 10.00am and 3.30pm was planned, and three groups of two collectors were required. Jane’s contact is 348 8190 during business hours, or 348 8190 at home. The failure of members to notify Brian of their planned absence from club meetings has reached the point where a reminder is appropriate. Unless leave of absence has been granted it is the responsibility of members, and a matter of courtesy, to let the club know. The rare unexpected event is accepted, but it should not be common practice, so to save Brian from needless worry, please ring him in advance (phone 344 3056).
