Guest Speaker Our guest tonight was Geoff Lawson who spoke to us several years ago on the history and restoration of the Krupp Gun. Once the restoration was done he realised that the history of the gun was largely unknown as was the history of New Zealanders who fought in the Anglo-Boer War. The 1st Contingent of the NZ Mounted Rifles was the very first deployment of troops from NZ to fight in a foreign war and they fought mainly on the Western Front. His book, Our Gun gives the history of the gun, where it came from and why it is here, as part of the overall history of the NZ Mounted Rifles and their battles on the Western Front. There are plenty of war time photographs including some from Bloemfontein taken by Boer troops, with interesting insights into the Boers’ point of view of the war. Once this book was finished, he realised it made a great background for a novel based on the period. Hence his second book-“Forgiven.” He particularly wanted the book and its characters to be “believable” for the period on which he was writing, hence several of the characters are based on real family members including his great grandfather and great grandmother. Today, very few New Zealanders know much about the Boer War but the New Zealand troops who fought there were very highly regarded both by the Australians and the British High Command. Both books are on sale at Pages Book Shop in Guyton Street.

Club Pub Night Please note that for the Club Pub Night to be held next Friday 21 July, we will be trialling a new venue - The Cossie Club… We expect to use the room off the Dining Room. Sad News President Elect of Rotary International, Sam Owori, passed away two days ago as the result of post-operative complications following planned surgery. Sam would have been RI President the year our Marion becomes our District Governor. Sam came from Uganda and his death is a huge loss to Rotary, his community and the World. He became a member of Rotary in 1978. Since he served as District Governor in his Country, the number of Clubs increased from 9 to 89. He has served RI as Regional Rotary Foundation Co-ordinator, Regional RI membership Co-ordinator, RI representative to The United Nations Environment Programme and UN Habitat and RI Director

Velodrome Update Bob spoke at some length on the proposed Velodrome Roof, primarily the Key Achievements so far 1. The stand at the Saturday market has attracted strong support both locally and regionally. People who give their names as supporters receive a regular newsletter. Some visiting architects showed great interest in the design. 2. Geotechnical Investigation - Reports show there will be heavy ground loading both up and down. The upward forces are due to the wingsail effect of the roof design. 3. Archaeological Clearance – There are no known sites of archaeological interest around the velodrome. 4. Resource Consent from an Independent Commissioner has opened a number of new doors. 5. A charitable trust has been formed to run the project. 6. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by the WDC. 7. A business plan has been signed off by the Mayor and CEO with input from PNCC & Rangitikei DC. 8. Letters of Support have been received from the 7 local authorities within Horizons RC. 9. Design Development of the roof began on 1/7/2017. 10. It will be a multi-purpose facility; this is a prerequisite of Horizons. 11. Wanganui DC has put money in which means other Local Authorities will now contribute. 12. Bill English is due to come to Wanganui by or before August to “make an announcement.” 13. PNCC & PN Chamber of Commerce are both supportive. 14. Wanganui Ratepayers Association is supportive. 15. Project Control Group consisting of 2 Council Members & 2 Trustees has been set up with the goal of being up and running by the time of the 2019 Masters Games. As an indication of potential benefits to Wanganui, the Cambridge Velodrome is used 80% of the time by non-cycling users. With the same level of use in Wanganui it is estimated there would be an 11,000 increase in bed-nights per year. A cheque for $5000.00 was handed to Bob as a show of support from Wanganui North Rotary.
