Marion reported that the club Social Committee had recently got together and spent ‘quite a bit of social time and an appropriate amount of committee time.’ Entries are now being taken for the spud growing competition; results to be judged at the club barbeque in February. Marion gave thanks - in advance - for the meal, which proved to be an improvement on recent offerings. Marie reported that a new project, yet to be announced, is happening on 25 November? She said that arrangements for Carols by Candlelight on 11 December are progressing well, thanks to input from Dugald and others. Marie also mentioned that John and Deon had met with Mark Brimblecombe, photographer, at the Hospital to discuss a mock-up of photography which Mark will put together. Mike told us that a roster has been drawn up for the trailer raffle, commencing in October. Also, he had been asked by Evert van Reenan if we could supply about six collectors to help at the temporary slipway in Kowhai Park on Saturday when the Waimarie is dragged out of the river for its 5 yearly survey and hull repaint. Cranleigh reported that he, along with Graeme Carey and Graeme Foster, had worked on Tuesday to place the new seats in their positions at Bushy Park. The seats are bolted onto concrete plinths. He reminded us that the new membership information evening will be held on 12 October. Five members will talk about their experiences in Rotary. Approximately 24 people are being targeted so far for new membership.

Guest Speaker Sue introduced our guest speaker; Ella, who is being jointly hosted by the four Wanganui clubs. Ella enjoys a very ‘full on’ life. Busy with various sport and education commitments before she came to Wanganui, busy taking part in many activities since arriving in Wanganui and on her return to her home in Vienna, Austria, she will be looking forward to an extremely bright and busy future.

Dressed in a Lederhosen (traditionally the male national costume of Austria, but accepted now as female attire because of its comfort and modesty), she talked to us about herself and family, her lifestyle, hometown, country and future prospects. Already she is able to compare what she is accustomed to with what she has found in NZ and she feels we are friendly, open and supportive people (who like lots of hugging) and our education system is comparatively easy. Ella’s future plans are to study Political Sciences, to attend the Diplomatic Academy in Austria and eventually become a Diplomat. We wish her well in everything she does. Lynne Phillips, who is the chair of Rotary District Youth Exchange committee, thanked us for our involvement with Ella and also reminded us that we have opportunities to put forward candidates for outward bound student exchanges and to support them as much as possible.

Any member unable to undertake their allocated duty is requested to find a replacement and advise the President accordingly.

From the Meeting Terry reminded us of the arrangement in place to farewell Iain and Mary. We will be gathering at 5:30 for 6:30 on Friday 16 September, at Caroline’s Boatshed in Aramoho to have drinks and a meal with Iain and Mary. President PK advised that Rotary South’s Foodbank Drive will take place on 20 October and we are asked to supply as many drivers as possible. Peter also mentioned the free Blood Pressure testing to be held at Pak’n’Save on 1 October between 10:00am and 2:00pm. St John Ambulance requires assistance with this. Can we please supply at least four helpers to do 2hr stints during this time? An appeal to all members, please adhere to the simple arrangement in place, for advising of apologies when intending to be absent from our weekly dinner meetings. At present this is not being done very well and is creating a major organisational headache for Brian who tries to co-ordinate with the kitchen staff with information he receives from members regarding numbers. Please be fair; we are fortunate to have Brian to look after this for us.
