The Resurrection of Our Lord April 21, 2019

8:00 a.m.

THEME OF THE DAY Today’s goal is to both profess Easter and possess Easter. Easter happened. That’s professing. Easter is happening in me. That’s possessing! PRESERVICE MUSIC WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation! C: The LORD’s right arm has done marvelous things! P: The LORD’s right arm is raised in triumph. C: The LORD’s right arm has done marvelous things! P: We will not die; instead, we will live to tell what the LORD has done. C: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. P: This is the LORD’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes. C: This is the day the LORD has made. P: Let us rejoice and be glad in it! C: Christ is risen! P: He is risen, indeed! OPENING HYMN: “Jesus Christ is Risen Today” LSB 457 CONFESSION OF SINS P: Forgive me, merciful and mighty father, when my besetting sins entangle me and completely surround me. C: Who will rescue? P: Forgive me, Lord, when I am so eager to get but so reluctant to give; so ready to receive your gifts but so unwilling to bear the cross. C: Who will rescue? P: Forgive me, merciful Father, when I avoid making any commitment to you; when I doubt that you really see my sin; when I disobey your commandments and am satisfied with only living for myself. 2

C: Who will rescue me? P: Forgive me, Lord, when I am quick to find fault but resentful when someone points out my faults; when I am so soon at play but so late in prayer. C: Who will rescue me? P: Father, forgive me when I rejoice in the temporary but think little of the eternal; when I am so fond of being idle but show little passion for helpful service. C: Who will rescue me from this body of death? [You are invited to silently reflect on the fact that though our sin is great, Christ’s love is greater.] P: Who will rescue you and me from this body of death? Thanks be to God, he delivers us through Jesus Christ! By the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, I, a called and ordained servant of the Word, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. This is the day the LORD has made. All: Let us rejoice and be glad in it! INTROIT P: I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; C: the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea. P: The Lord is my strength and my song, C: and he has become my salvation; P: Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power, C: your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy. P: You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed; C: you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode. P: You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain, C: the place, O Lord, which you have made for your abode, P: the sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have established. C: The Lord will reign forever and ever. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; C: the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea. 3

GOSPEL PROCESSIONAL HOLY GOSPEL L The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty-fourth chapter.

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” 8 And they remembered his words,9 and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, 11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. 12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened. Sit HYMN OF THE DAY: “Come, You Faithful, Raise the Strain” LSB 487 7

THE MESSAGE: “Against All Odds!” CONFESSION OF FAITH (Second Article of the Apostles Creed & Explanation) I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried, He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. What does this mean? I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord. Who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Following the pastor’s prayer, “Christ is risen!” the Congregation is invited to respond, “He is risen indeed!” OFFERING (Please sign and date the Rite of Friendship pad located in the pew. The children are invited to bring their offerings to the front at this time.)

SANCTUARY CHOIR: “Sing the Resurrection Song!” ………………….Larson

HOLY COMMUNION PREFACE

8

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God. And most especially are we bound to praise You on this day for the glorious resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, the very Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us and bore the sins of the world. By His dying he has destroyed death, and by His rising again He has restored to us everlasting life. Therefore with Mary Magdalene, Peter and John, and with all the witnesses of the resurrection, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS

9

LORD'S PRAYER ALL: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION PAX DOMINI

Sit About Holy Communion—The Lord’s Supper is celebrated here in the belief and glad confidence that our Lord gives us as He says, not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. If this is your belief, we welcome you to join us at the Lord’s table. Because we are called to examine ourselves before receiving the Lord’s Supper (I Corinthians 11:28-29), we encourage you to consider the questions on p. 329-330 in the front of the hymnal. If you are communing with us for the first time, or if you would like a fuller understanding of what we as Lutherans believe about the Lord’s Supper, please pick up a copy of “What is the Lord’s Supper?” at the Information table in the entryway. Please reserve the white grape juice cups in the center of the communion trays for those who for health reasons are unable to drink wine. If your health requires gluten-free wafers, they are available upon request. Speak to the pastor prior to the service. Our pastors are happy to speak to you further if you have any questions.

THANK THE LORD

POST-COMMUNION COLLECT P: Let us pray… We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and in fervent love towards one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
