The Fourth Sunday After the Epiphany Matins Service (LSB pg 219)

January 29, 2017

8:00 & 10:30am

AS WE GATHER Although Jesus does not say “blessed are the patient” as He speaks that special list of attributes of God’s people that we know as the Beatitudes, the fruit of patience underlies the “blessed are” statements He does mention. It takes patience to be merciful and to act as peacemakers. Staying calm when being persecuted for righteousness’ sake takes patience. Enduring unfair criticism takes patience as well. There may even be a need for patience as we share with the saints in the worship life of the Church. May it be fully evident among us at all times! PRESERVICE MUSIC WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN: “Lift High the Cross” LSB 837 P: O Lord, open my mouth.

P: Make haste, O God, to deliver me.

2

PSALMODY P: Blessed be God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

VENITE

3

ANTIPHON P: Blessed be God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Sit OLD TESTAMENT: Micah 6:1-8 Listen to what the LORD says: “Stand up, plead my case before the mountains; let the hills hear what you have to say. “Hear, you mountains, the LORD’s accusation; listen, you everlasting foundations of the earth. For the LORD has a case against his people; he is lodging a charge against Israel. “My people, what have I done to you? How have I burdened you? Answer me. I brought you up out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery. I sent Moses to lead you, also Aaron and Miriam. My people, remember what Balak king of Moab plotted and what Balaam son of Beor answered. Remember your journey from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the righteous acts of the LORD.” With what shall I come before the LORDand bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God HYMN: “In the Cross of Christ I Glory” LSB 427 EPISTLE: 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God 4

has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God Stand HOLY GOSPEL: Matthew 5:1-12 L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fifth chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them. He said: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Sharing the Caring Christ with All People Matthew 5:1-12: When someone asks you, “How are you today?” How do you respond? So often we instinctively quip, “fine, okay, good as can be expected.” But those responses do not elicit much of a reaction. Today’s Gospel, the grace of God and the power of the Cross give us the opportunity to joyfully respond to that question with a bold, “Blessed!” “I am blessed in Christ!” We have the right and the privilege to boast in the Lord and the blessedness found only in Him. Why not make manifest the blessedness that is found in Jesus - and let that response be your sharing of the Good News that is found in you and through you only because of Christ! Today’s Radio Broadcast is sponsored by the members of Trinity Lutheran Church. We thank them for sponsoring this broadcast. We have sponsorship openings in February and March. If you would like to sponsor a broadcast please complete a form and turn it in. Forms are available in the church office. The radio transmission enables our shut-ins, as well as others in our community to hear and participate in our worship. The service airs on WVAL 800 on the AM dial, at 8:00am, and live on the internet at www.800wval.com. Sunday Morning Fellowship Our servers for February are Carl & Helen Oltz. Members who have last names beginning with the letter “C & D” are asked to bring treats for our fellowship time during the month. If you can help, please sign up on the bulletin board. Church of The Week Homeless Ministry Hosted by Trinity Feb. 13 – Feb. 19, 2017

We will be having a “door offering” at both services today, to support this community outreach. This annual outreach provides overnight shelter and meals for the homeless. In addition to providing overnight shelter in our Fellowship Hall for 25-35 people each night, we will be preparing and serving a community meal for 100 people at Place of Hope every night at 5:00pm. Many volunteers are needed; to drive the bus, prepare & serve meals and snacks. Also, hosts/hostesses are needed to serve 5 hour shifts for overnight security (Married couples or 2 men or 2 women). Please sign up today on the poster in the lobby to prep and serve meals, snacks, and serve as overnight hosts/hostesses. This is a labor of love as our “Social Ministry” fund will be used to purchase all the food. It costs about $2 per plate for the ingredients for a meal. Would you consider helping to feed the hungry during our week? Would you consider feeding: 10 people = $20; 20 people = $40; 50 people= $100; 100 people= $200 If you would like to donate, checks can be made payable to Trinity Lutheran Church and in the memo please note: “Social Ministry”. This is a once a year opportunity for us to show God’s love to others in need just as God has shown His love to us in Christ. On Sunday, February 5th at 3:30 p.m., Pastor Keith Weise will be installed as Chaplain at the Good Shepherd Community and Pastor of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Sauk Rapids. The service of installation will be held at the Good Shepherd chapel. 10
