Colin introduced Bruce Kennedy to the meeting, that he had joined Rotary in 1965 and is our longest serving member, was President from 1974 to 1975 and in 2005 received a Paul Harris Sapphire pin. Bruce went on to describe Rotary as it evolved in Wanganui - initially one club but as it grew it divided into Rotary North which was north of Bell St and Rotary South which was south of Wilson St, and if you had a business or resided in these areas then you were able to join Rotary. Initially North had a large industrial component of Woollen Mills, Railway Workshops and shop keepers. Attendance was strict, 100 % was asked for and if a member dropped below 70 % he was asked to leave. A member called Alex Herd had 100% for 10 years and our Bruce had 6 years at 100%. Wanganui Rotary had 100% for 30 attendances which was a NZ record but ended when ‘Jolly’ Joll became snowed in at Waiouru. Rotary Conferences were a must and Carols by Candlelight was initially for one time only but was so successful that it is now an institution. One year North raised $60,000 for a scanner at Wanganui Base Hospital by going around businesses and having them pledge an amount. Another fine project in 1999 was the re-building of a cyclone damaged college in Tonga by about 15 of our members, this was very successful and is still going strong. Bruce went on to compliment Rotary North for keeping up its membership so well. There was further reminiscence from members - Mike stated that when meeting at the Palm Lounge they had a trial of selling alcohol, still going strong, also when women first joined there numerous threats of member resignations. Several members - Cranleigh, Malcolm, and Leigh also gave insight into the actual building of the Tongan school.
