Meeting Tonight was the annual Barbecue, held at the Vintage Car Club rooms in Maketu Street. The start of the evening was delayed slightly while we waited for President Peter to arrive back from Australia. However Cranleigh began proceedings by announcing that kebabs and breakfast sausages would be served while we waited, and PK arrived just as the Hors D’oeuvres were being served. The Potato Competition was then judged, the winners being Cranleigh with a total weight of 2.8kg, John Oskam with 1.78kg and Margaret Chainey with 1.52kg. Bottom of the list were Terry Coxon with 100gm and Betty Law with 30gm. Deon Hazelhurst with his Genetically Modified Organisms, complete with self-wrapping paper bag was disqualified.

Presidents Announcements Rotary in NZ is looking for kiwi kids to become exchange students. Male or female, 16-18 years old. Rotary pays some of the costs but as noted in last week’s bulletin, the total cost is over $14,000.00. Ideally candidates should be closer to 16 so they don’t use the year overseas as a GAP year. The raffle was won by Leith-a basket of goodies. Rural Urban night will be on Sunday 26th March, 6pm at Kaitoke School. Further details at next week’s meeting, including whether it takes the place of the weekly meeting on Wednesday 29th March.
From the meeting.... Ella, our exchange student from Austria gave us an update on where she has been and what she has done since she last spoke to us in December.
Calendar
She has been to Auckland, done a Bungy jump, went to Feilding where she met up with Alex, another exchange student, went to a sale at the Feilding Sale Yards, sheep and cattle, and finally managed to understand the auctioneer. She was taken to Napier where she met up with another exchange student who she first met in the South Island. She also attended the Boxing Day Motorcycle Races at the Cemetery Circuit.
17th February Club Pub Night Rutland Arms Inn 5pm
She is currently saving up to go sky diving so is available for babysitting or other money earning odd jobs.
Sunday 5th March
Bob Smith, our past District Governor spoke about how impressed he is with our club and its obvious strength. He congratulated Marion on being selected as a future DG, and noted it was good to get the Governorship away from Wellington occasionally. He noted that it is a huge commitment and even though RI gives two solid years of training for the position, Marion will need all the support that the club can give her, especially when it comes to organising the annual conference. It will be held in Wanganui, possibly under the new Velodrome roof?
Rural Urban Night Kaitoke School
This year’s conference will be in New Plymouth and the best show of support for Marion will be as many members as possible attending. Bob then introduced Henry Vaeoso who in partnership with Jonah Lomu foundation – is promoting “On You”, a program designed to fight the rising obesity epidemic in New Zealand, especially among Pasifika. Henry was blown away by the level of support from Rotary in Wanganui for the program. It is a program based on both good nutrition and good exercise. He also noted that Jonah was possibly a greater hero in the UK than in his own country. Henry and Bob are calling for volunteers to assist with setting up on the Memorial Hall Forecourt this Saturday at 8.30am. Next week we meet again at the RSA. The key to our cupboard there is missing. Does anyone know where it is?
Club Pub Night Friday 17th February Rutland Arms Inn 5pm
Finally, a round of applause for the Social Committee and their dedicated chef’s for making this evening such a success.
