President Graeme Prince opened the meeting, welcomed returning members, explained that there was no guest speaker due to committee meetings and then said Grace. Again, another superb meal by the Caterers of a gently spiced beef stew, bacon macaroni and vegetables, these cooks continue to surprise us with their varied delicious menus. It was nice to see Maurice Mildenhall return from the Continent where, with his wife, they travelled 300km of the Pilgrims Way averaging 4 to 6 hours a day. He drew the raffle which was again won by Brian Foley. Graeme expressed thanks to Cranleigh for his efforts in organising last week’s prospective new members meeting, with the added comment that all the speakers were so positive in their enthusiasm and conviction. He also commented that October was a particularly busy month for our club with the following to note Car park duties (please check roster sheet next week). Trailer raffle each Saturday. DG’s visit on Wednesday 18th October. Food bank drive on Thursday 18th October. There is a Rotary Leadership Institute workshop at the Marton Fire Station this Saturday and he has spare seating in his vehicle for anyone interested. Deputy Sergeant Malcolm Jansen stood in for Mike, fining DIYers, builders, fire fighters and those that had travelled to China and Russia, alluding to the burning of weed and the birds called ‘Terns not being left unstoned’. The Directors have received the following proposal for membership – Gerry Hardie, with a classification of Horticulture Management. Any member wishing to object to Gerry becoming a member must do so in writing, to the Secretary, by Friday 15th September 2017.
Reports Colin Slaughter discussed the barbecue set for February 2018 and that the potatoes in his wardrobe where starting to sprout, hence they would be available for purchase by members for the usual $10.00, bucket included. Cranleigh explained that, due to business commitments, Raj Patel had withdrawn his application to join. He thanked fellow Rotarians for their support in making the guests feel so welcome last week and that two have expressed a desire to join our club. Also, there would be a post induction meeting 6 to 8 weeks after induction of new members. At Bushy Park, the hard working group of Cranleigh , Graeme and Wilf had removed fences, cleaned up the entrance and already placed the large posts in situ - buried up to a depth of 1.6 metres at the gateway …. what a tremendous trio these members are. Terry Coxon asked for drivers for the Food Bank Appeal - needed about 50 percent of members and also elaborated we had to conform to OSH (Health and Safety) requirements, e.g. current WoF, driving licence, at least 3 seat belts and insurance. Names where collected but another 10 are still needed.

Dougal informed members that there is to be a Whanganui Collegiate School 1st eleven cricket dinner on Saturday 23rd September, raising funds for their trip to the West Indies over Xmas, the cost of $150 includes Sir Graham Henry as guest speaker. Peter Kamstra informed the club that Brian Smith, while on a cruise overseas, was admitted to hospital in Athens but has subsequently made good recovery and has carried on his vacation. The meeting concluded with the thought – if at first you don't succeed………..don't become a sword swallower.
