THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY January 20, 2019

Divine Service Setting 4 (LSB pg 203)

8:00 a.m.

AS WE GATHER Right here. Right now. Jesus is present. Take a moment and let that sink in. Jesus—the very Son of God and King of the universe—is present! As He was at the wedding feast in Cana of Galilee, where He gave the first sign of His glory, He also is present with us today through the Word proclaimed and the “sign” received in His body and blood. The Table will be prepared. The bread and the wine will be plentiful. And you will be invited to come: “Take, eat. Take, drink.” Christ’s true presence is here for you, and you are richly blessed! Savor this hour as we gather and receive Jesus into our midst. What a holy hour this is! Right here. Right now. You are blessed by Jesus’ presence. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN: “I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry”

INVOCATION, CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: who made heaven and earth. P: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? C: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. P: Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word and call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess 3

before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P: Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. KYRIE

SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit. P: Let us pray… Almighty and everlasting God, who governs all things in heaven and on earth, mercifully hear the prayers of Your people and grant us Your peace through all our days; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Sit OLD TESTAMENT: Isaiah 62:1-5 For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch. 2 The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. 3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4 You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married. 5 For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Psalm 29 P: Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, C: ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. P: Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; C: worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness. P: The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, C: the Lord, over many waters. 5

P: C: P: C: P: C: P: C: P: C: P: C: P: C: P: C:

The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare, and in his temple all cry, “Glory!” The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever. May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!

ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. EPISTLE: 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 6

(Stand) ALLELUIA AND VERSE

HOLY GOSPEL: John 2:1-11 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the second chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord.

On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk 7

freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. NICENE CREED (see video screens) Sit HYMN: “The Only Son From Heaven” LSB 402 THE MESSAGE OFFERING (Please sign and date the Rite of Friendship pad located in the pew. The children are invited to bring their offerings to the front at this time.)

SANCTUARY CHOIR: “Ascribe to the Lord” …….…………….Joseph M. Martin PRAYER OF THE CHURCH HOLY COMMUNION PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; for what had been hidden from before the foundation of the world You have made known to the nations in your Son. In Him, being found in the substance of our mortal nature, You have manifested the fullness of Your glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: 8

SANCTUS

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING P: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. As the glory of Your presence once filled Your ancient temple, so in the incarnation of Your Son, Jesus Christ, You manifested the fullness of Your glory in human flesh. We give You thanks that in His most Holy Supper You reveal Your glory to us. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood so that we may one day behold Your glory face to face. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us: LORD'S PRAYER (Back cover of LSB hymnal) THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION PAX DOMINI P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. 9

AGNUS DEI

About Holy Communion—The Lord’s Supper is celebrated here in the belief and glad confidence that our Lord gives us as He says, not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. If this is your belief, we welcome you to join us at the Lord’s table. Because we are called to examine ourselves before receiving the Lord’s Supper (I Corinthians 11:28-29), we encourage you to consider the questions on p. 329-330 in the front of the hymnal. If you are communing with us for the first time, or if you would like a fuller understanding of what we as Lutherans believe about the Lord’s Supper, please pick up a copy of “What is the Lord’s Supper?” at the Information table in the entryway. Please reserve the white grape juice cups in the center of the communion trays for those who for health reasons are unable to drink wine. If your health requires gluten-free wafers, they are available upon request. Speak to the pastor prior to the service. Our pastors are happy to speak to you further if you have any questions.

A member of Trinity is in need of a ride to worship on Sunday mornings. If you would like to help in this way, please call the church office at 252-3670. Trinity’s Newly Elected Leaders: President: Terry Kurash, Vice President: John Alstrup Treasurer: Mark Helgeson, Secretary: Katie Dusing Minnesota March for Life: Tuesday, January 22nd. Begins at noon in front of the Capital Building in St. Paul. Contact Lynn Machula for more information: 252-5795 What is it? Operation “All On Board” is the opportunity we want to present to as many members of our Prince of Peace Lutheran School Association to “come on board” with their support for our school as we approach our annual Legacy Benefit Dinner and Auction April 7. Our theme this year is “The Promises of God” especially when it comes to raising children in the Christian faith based on Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” How will it happen? We will be placing large glass jugs in our Association congregations during the months of January and February. Members of our Association congregations will be invited to place their change (cash donations also welcome) in these jugs in the weeks leading up to our Benefit. Our goal is to give as many people as possible and especially those who are unable to attend the Dinner and Auction the opportunity to financially support our ministry of providing a Christ-centered education to children, helping to “train them up in the way” of Christ. How will these gifts be used? 100% of every gift will be used to help pay for all of the costs that come with the operation of our school. In a real way then, every gift becomes an investment in the children attending Prince of Peace Lutheran School where each child is receiving an education for life centered on Christ. And please pray! Pray for our school – our students and teachers and staff. Ask our gracious Lord to bless our efforts to provide a Christian education to every family who desires it for their children. Please come to the Legacy Benefit Dinner and Auction on April 7th. And if you are unable to attend, please prayerfully consider this as one way you can “come on board” and provide support for the ministry of Prince of Peace Lutheran School. The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Prince of Peace Lutheran School during National Lutheran Schools Week, January 31-February 1st. There will be an excellent choice of books available, preschool through grade 8. If you are all “booked up” those two days, orders can be taken online from January 23-February 5, at bookfairs.scholastic.com. If you have any questions, please contact Lori Lentz, Book Fair Chairperson, at 251-1477. 15
