West Side Presbyterian Church Sacrament of Holy Communion All Saints’ Day November 4, 2018

10:15 am Service

So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave to all.” -Mark 10:42-44 When pride comes, then comes disgrace; but wisdom is with the humble. The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them. -Proverbs 11:2-3 For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He adorns the humble with victory. -Psalm 149:4 God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. -James 4:6 The greatest among you will be your servant. -Matthew 23:11 For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. -Luke 14:11 For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as ransom for many. -Mark 4:45

*CALL TO WORSHIP and OPENING PRAYER Praise the Lord, all you faithful people! With all the saints, we sing God’s praise. By the grace of Christ, we are God’s own. With all the blessed ones, we rejoice. Let us pray: God of the faithful in every age, show us what it truly means to be called “blessed” suffering with the despised, weeping with the afflicted, hungering for justice and peace, desiring only Your holy realm. Teach us to love one another even as You have loved us, so that all may know Your blessing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. *HYMN OF PRAISE 526

CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Sovereign God, we confess that we have not turned away from sin. We do not try to love our enemies or bless those who curse us. We do not turn the other cheek or give to those in need. The prayer continues.

~ The Response to the Word ~ *RESPONSE OF FAITH

Philippians 2:3-8

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though He was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. For those we have known and loved within this congregation:

ANTHEM

At the River

setting, Aaron Copland

Shall we gather at the river, where bright angel feet have trod, with its crystal tide forever flowing by the throne of God? Yes, we’ll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river; gather with the saints at the river that flows by the throne of God. Soon we’ll reach the silver river, soon our pilgrimage will cease; soon our happy hearts will quiver with the melody of peace. PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY ANTHEM

Love Must Be Genuine

Deborah Holden-Holloway

Love must be genuine. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God’s people who are in need and practice hospitality. Love must be genuine. -Romans 12:9-13 This anthem was commissioned in loving memory of Barbara W. Schott (1927—2017), a longtime member of West Side Presbyterian Church and devoted member of the Chancel Choir, by her husband, Dr. Francis Schott. 5

*DOXOLOGY 591

OLD HUNDREDTH

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise Christ, all people here below; praise Holy Spirit evermore; praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen.

~ The Sacrament of Holy Communion ~ *INVITATION *GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Blessed are You, O Lord our God: You are the ancient and eternal Lord. You reign in glory over all the earth, calling the faithful to dwell with You forever. Therefore we praise You, joining the song of the universal church and heavenly choir: *SANCTUS (Choir and congregation singing)

Blessed is Jesus Christ, our Savior: Jesus came to show the way of Your realm. He teaches us to love our enemies and to bless those who curse us. Remembering Your goodness and grace, we offer ourselves to You with gratitude as we share this joyful feast. MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION

Pour out Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this bread and cup; make us one in the body and blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. Give us Your Spirit of wisdom and truth; so that we may know the power of the gospel and receive an inheritance among the saints. Through the Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Spirit, we bless You, God of glory, now and forever. Amen. Please be seated. WORDS OF INSTITUTION

You are welcome to listen to the Postlude. If you are leaving before it is finished, please do so quietly. ******* Our worship has ended. May our service to God and others continue.

Today’s Communion “Experiment” Today the Worship and Music Council continues the experiment begun in September with the use of unleavened bread for the Sacrament of Communion at all three services. It is hoped that this method will prove to be less wasteful. A gluten-free option is still available. We invite your feedback. Please share your thoughts with Deborah Holden-Holloway ([email protected]), who will collect responses and share them with the pastoral staff and the Worship and Music Council.

Greeters: We thank Donna Dykstra and Mary Jo Freebody for greeting today. Procession of Worship Elements: The worship elements are being carried in this morning by those serving Communion. Lay Leadership: We thank Brian Hanse for his leadership in worship today. We also thank Carla Auld for sharing her musical talents today. First and final stanzas of hymns are usually sung in unison, middle stanzas in parts.

Share your prayer concerns on the cards provided in the pew rack. Ushers will collect the cards during the announcements.

Those arriving after the Call to Worship begins will be seated during the next hymn or the passing of the peace. If you must leave the Sanctuary during worship, please wait in the Narthex until the next hymn, the passing of the peace or the doxology before returning to your seat. Please help us protect and care for our beautiful worship space. Food and beverages, with the exception of closed plastic water bottles, are not allowed in the Sanctuary.

Please turn off your cell phone before worship begins.

Large print bulletins and hymnals are available in the Narthex.

Assistive listening devices are available by contacting one of the ushers.
